kiera.kathleen.lundberg.kiera.kathleen.lundberg.kiera.kathleen.lundberg.Design has always been a hobby of mine. I first began exploring the

field around the age of ten when I began designing websites for an online community that I belonged to. Originally, I was simply using

HTML to make the most ascetically pleasing page that I could manage. However, around the age of thirteen I began to create my own graph-

ics for websites by using Microsoft’s Paint program. I moved from web-site to website learning new tricks and finding inspiration. Soon after

using Paint I downloaded a trial of Photoshop; it was after this that I re-ally developed a passion for making graphics and began making forum

graphics on a request website. I still belong to that same request site and it is from there that I have learned many of the skills I have today.

School has been another place for my technique to develop. Through the Communications Technology course I have been exposed to pro-

grams such as Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bryce, Pre-miere Pro, After Affects, as well as other programs. The course also provides opportunities in the school community to utilize the graphic

design skills that the students are taught. I have made numerous flyers for school events, and this year I made a music video for the Remem-

brance Day assembly.

It is from Comm Tech that I also learned about photography. In grade ten we learned about composition and technique and took black and

white pictures using a Pentax K1000. Once we had completed the as-signment, we then went through the entire developing process (develop-

ing the film and then making enlarged prints). After learning how to op-erate the SLRs we then used the DSLRs that the school owned. I have since bought my own DSLR and continue to take pictures and edit them

as a hobby.

I was a member of the Perth Stingrays Aquatic Club for approximately five years. As a member of the swim team I practiced six days a week, for a total of 13 hours. Not only was it a great social and athletic experience for me, but swimming also taught me a lot of valuable lessons that have carried through to my everyday life. The swim team required a lot of dis-cipline; you had to commit yourself to your work and carry it out no mat-ter how difficult it became. I learned how to work independently whilst being a part of a team as well as how to manage my time. At night I would have around three hours between getting home from practice until I went to bed, meaning I had to use my time wisely in order to get all of my homework and projects done. Swimming taught me to make goals and figure out a path that would lead me to success.

I have also been a part of school activities such as the Justice Action Committee, the Dominican Republic Exposure Trip, the school swim team, and the school concert band. I have played flute in a school band since grade seven. Music is something that I’m very passionate about and it has always been a huge part of my life. I have taken a music class every year (excluding this year) since grade seven and I’m also signed up to be a member of the pit band for this year’s musical.I have decided that pursuing design is the best choice for me. Since it combines my love of math, science, computers and design, the Interac-tive Multimedia and Design program is my first choice. I’m really looking forward to participating in this program next year.

paintings & sketchesThe Little Boy and the Moon is an acrylic painting done on 12” x 12” canvas. I have never taken an art class and this is my first ever painting. I had many influences in this piece. Andrew King and Tim Burton inspired the shape of the boy, and Van Gogh was the inspiration for the style of sky. I wanted the figure of the boy to be the most prom-inent aspect of the piece and the balloon was painted red so that it would stand out against the dark sky. Since it is winter, I wanted the image to appear rather stark and cold, which is why I chose to use such a colour palette and make the shapes so linear.

I chose to take three pictures and turn Michael Cera into a doll. I used the warp, blur, dodge and burn tools to turn Cera’s face into something resembling a plastic doll face. Then, I combined the image with anoth-er image of Cera to give the doll a torso, matching the colour and tex-ture in the process. I put Michael’s body into a vintage Ken doll box, and modified it, adding text and a plastic cover in the process. The end result is a Scott Pilgrim doll that appears to be enclosed in a toy box.

A picture of Emma Watson was taken and made to look like she was an old wom-an. This effect was created by using pictures of old women and adding their wrinkles to Emma’s face. Wrinkled were also burned into her skin to add a more realistic effect of skin folds. As well, her hair was lightened to show more of a grey colour and her eyebrows were made heavy to remove their original youth-ful look. Emma’s eyelids were dropped and her mouth was puckered. Also, her jewlery was modified to look more elderly. The final effect can be seen here.

In this manipulation, the people were extracted from the original image. This was done using the clone tool to recreat the sky as well as adding in the backs of clothing. Painting was also used to make the clothing. To blend better with the look of the pho-to I added noise to the created clothing and blurred the edges so that they seemed slightly out of focus like the people in the backgroun had been. I left the man in the front to have an obvious contrast between the people and missing people as well as the fact that when removed the image looked very strange due to his weird body angle.

During March of 2011, ten students from St. John Catholic High school trav-elled to Dominican Republic to take part in an exposure trip. I was lucky enough to be one of these students. We spent a week in the Dominican and spent time with migrant Haitian workers as well as many other impoverished people. We walked through the slums, spent time at an orphanage, walked through a sweat shop and learned about education and poverty in the Do-minican. It was an amazing opportunity. These are some of the pictures.

The batman vector was one of my first times using the pen tool. The entire post-er was made using this tool. I used images of various batman characters and a picture of a cityscape to use as a base and drew all of the images in pho-toshop. In order to create a balanced design I added the colour burst in the background and action bubbles to fill up the excess negative space. The design was originally in red but was changed to blue to better fit the batman theme.

This year I designed two logos for two different schools. The first logo, the raven, was created for the student council at St. Thomas Aquinas. The council wanted their school mascot, the raven, to be the main focus of the logo and requested that the face be in profile while the body faced forward. Feet gripping a gavel and book were also requested. The laptop logo for St. John Catholic High school had to incorporate one of the school’s logos as well as a number system and be easy to print as a sticker.

This year St. John Catholic High school put on a production of My Fair Lady. My task was to create an original and creative play program. I chose to look at old play bills as inspiration since the play is set in Edwardian England. The theme for the program was an etiquette textbook, and so images of a tea set, a brush set, a parasol and a bouqette of flowers were used on the cover as they are all symbols of lady-like behaviour. I used the classic “My Fair Lady” font on the cover so that those who knew the movie could easily identify with the cover.

miscellaneousmiscellaneousEmpty Bottles was made by paiting images in PhotoShop. This is the only piece of this style I have ever attempted. I layered many rock textures and used pait-ing as well as dodge and burn to achieve this look. Wood textures and various layer styles were also used. The goal of this piece was to make the image look as close as possible to an actual paiting. Texture was a crucial part of this as well as slight variations in colour in order to not make it look computer generated.

Although I was not a member of the yearbook class, I was asked as a favour to create the yearbook cover this year. I only had one school day to make this cover. Since the theme of the yearbook was “Dare to be..” I chose to incorporate the page titles into the cover. The background is a collage of all of the page titles in the book and really represents our school motto as well as the contents of the book. The font on the cover was one that the yearbook class had deemed as the main font of the book and I was therefofre required to use it on the main title.
