Day 1: depart us.

Days 2-3: new delhi, india’s imperial city. new delhi has seen the rise and fall of many kingdoms and empires. Each dynasty left behind some type of architectural legacy for the world to admire and remember, The Oberoi.

Days 4-6: sacred india, Varanasi and khajuraho. tour Varanasi by rickshaw bicycle. cruise along the ghats of the ganges river at sunset, where pilgrims offer prayers amid the ringing of temple bells. then on to khajuraho and the erotic carvings of the chandela temples, Taj Ganges Hotel and Lalit Temple View.

Days 7-8: taj mahal, monument to love. today drive to orchha to visit its medieval palaces and temples. Early evening, board the train to agra. the extravagant taj provides a magical backdrop to your fairy tale accommodations at the illustrious Oberoi Amarvilas.

Days 9-11: Jaipur, the pink city. ride to the elaborate amber fort via elephant back; explore the old pink city including the city palace and the astronomical observatory. Your hotel is the glorious Rambagh Palace.

Royal India: Aboard the Maharajas’ Express

Day One - Depart USA Fly from your departure city in the USA to Delhi, India’s capital city. Day Two – Arrival in Delhi Your international flight arrives this evening at Delhi’s International Airport where you will be met and transferred by private car and driver to the Imperial Hotel (Heritage room)

Day Three – Delhi B This afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of India’s capital city beginning at the Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque, then onto Raj Ghat, the spot where Gandhi was cremated following his assassination in 1948.

Day Four – Delhi B,L As we drive through Delhi’s ‘imperial city’ we see the city of the British Raj, with its grand Viceroy’s Palace, now the home of the President of India as well as the nearby Secretariat and Parliament buildings, all designed by the famed architect, Lutyens. No visit of Delhi is complete without a visit to the impressive Qutab Minar complex with its tower, mosque and the Alai Darwaza entrance gate, all built by the first Muslim dynasty to rule India. End your sightseeing excursion at the stunning Humayun’s Tomb, an important landmark in the history of Mughal architecture for it marks the advent of grand tombs set in gardens designed in the Persian manner. Lunch is at a local restaurant.

Day Five – Maharajas’ Express/Agra B,L,D This morning proceed to Delhi’s Safardjung Railway station where you will be escorted aboard the Maharajas’ Expre ss as you begin your epic journey through this exotic land. Your first stop is a visit to Agra, the jewel of India, and home to the famed Taj Mahal. A champagne lunch has been prepared at Taj Kheema as you experience your ‘first view’ of the Taj Mahal. Following lunch tour the Taj Mahal, described as the most extravagant monument ever built honouring love and India’s most illustrious landmark. Reboard the Maharajas’ Express for dinner on board this evening.

Day Six – Ranthambore/Jaipur B,L,D Breakfast is served before departing the train for your foray into Ranthambore Game Reserve, former private hunting ground of the Maharajas. Ranthambore was declared a National Park in 1973 and is famous for its sightings of tigers, sambar, chital, wild boar, sloth bear, and leopard. Reboard the Maharajas’ Expres s and enjoy brunch before arriving in Jaipur. Proceed on a tour of this princely city, visiting first the Amber Fort, perched on a cliff overlooking Jaipur. Our afternoon is spent exploring this renowned ‘Pink City’ famous for its jewelry and handicrafts. Later in the day enjoy an exhibition Elephant Polo match, while champagne and dinner is served. Return to Jaipur’s railway station and board the Maharajas’ Express to Bikaner.

Day Seven – Bikaner B,L,D We arrive in Bikaner this morning and proceed on a tour of this princely city. Bikaner is famed for its Bikaner Camel Corp, a colorful military mounted camel regiment, that parades at the Republic Day Parade in Delhi each year. Here you will visit another of Rajasthan’s forts, the Junagarh Fort built in 1593, a formidable structure encircled by a moat. Its interior palace rooms are a stunning example of artisanship unique to India. Lunch is at the magnificent palace. In the afternoon travel outside of Bikaner for a Sundowner in the Sand Dunes, where champagne toasts are heralded as the sunsets over the glowing desert. Reboard the Maharajas’ Express this evening for dinner on board.

Day Eight – Jodhpur B,L,D Jodhpur, situated at the edge of the Thar Desert is also known as the ‘Blue City’. It is famous for its magnificent forts and palaces from the Rajput era, with spectacular architecture and style. Enjoy a jeep safari outside of Jodhpur to Rohet, home of the Bishnoi tribe, passionate environmentalists and a community of nature worshippers. Visit the local village and tour the homes where local artisans preserve handicrafts centuries old. Lunch is at Rohetgarh ancestral home of the Rathore’s. Then you will tour the massive Meherangarh Fort, perched atop a hilltop, overlooking Jodhpur. Reboard the Maharajas’ Expres s and journey to Udaipur.

Day Nine – Udaipur B,L,D Today explore Udaipur, one of the most romantic cities in the entire world. Your visit will include the impressive City Palace, which stretches for more than 1km along the banks of Lake Pichola, with its shimmering white marble palace in the distance. Following lunch, enjoy a walk through the Old Market with its shops of silks, carpets, miniature paintings, jewelry and printed fabrics. Reboard the Maharajas’ Expres s and your journey continues.

Day Ten – Vadodara B,L,D Wake in Vadodora, once known as Baroda. Following breakfast on board tour of this city’s highlights, including the Champaner-Pavagadh Archeological Park, the Jami Masjid built in 1513 with tall minarets and minutely carved gates. Lunch will be at the ancient Jambughoda Palace, hosted by the royal family who still reside here. Your tour will continue with a visit to the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum with its exhibits from the royal collection. Among the most prized possessions are paintings by the 19th century painter, Raja Ravi Verma, and European masters, such as Raphael, Titian and Murillo. No visit to Baroda is complete without a tour and ‘high tea’ at the Laxmi Vilas Palace. The Palace was built by Maharaja Sayajirao III in 1890 and is still the residence of the Royal Family. Return to the station and board the Maharajas’ Express for dinner and overnight as you travel to Mumbai.

Day Eleven – Mumbai B,L Your romantic journey comes to an end this morning as you disembark the Maharajas’ Express train for the last time in the cosmopolitan city of Mumbai. You will transfer to the stately, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (Heritage Wing-Palace room), ideally located overlooking Bombay’s India Gate and harbor.

Day Twelve – Mumbai B After breakfast in the hotel, the morning is spent touring Bombay, allowing you to sample its progressive, vibrant atmosphere. Visit the dhobi ghats, Bombay’s unique outdoor laundry. Continue on your drive through Fort Bombay with its interesting blend of Indo-Saracenic architecture, ending with a walk through the bustling Crawford Market. The evening is at leisure.

Day Thirteen – Mumbai Transfer to Mumbai’s International Airport in time to board your homeward bound international flight.

The Maharajas’ Express train details: A train that never falls short of promising you a royal experience, the Maharajas’ Express train is comprised of 22 carriages carrying a maximum of 88 passengers in deluxe accommodations. The carriages are all fully air conditioned and include a lounge/bar car, an observation lounge with its own bar and game tables, and two dining carriages offering a fine array of Indian, Continental and International cuisine. There is an onboard boutique featuring exquisite and unique creations. The guest sleeping carriages are fully air-conditioned, well appointed and spacious having twin-bedded and queen bedded suites with modern en-suite facilities including private shower and toilet. Day Eight- Arrive Bikaner B,L,D We arrive in Bikaner this morning and proceed on a tour of this princely city. Bikaner is famed for its Bikaner Camel Corp, a colorful military mounted camel regiment, that parades at the Republic Day Parade in Delhi each year. Here you will visit another of Rajasthan’s forts, the Junagarh Fort built in 1593, a formidable structure encircled by a moat. Day Twelve– Delhi B,L Today enjoy a sightseeing tour of India’s capital city beginning at the Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque, Raj Ghat, the spot where Gandhi was cremated following his assassination in 1948. As we drive through Delhi’s ‘imperial city’ we see the city of the British Raj, with its grand Viceroy’s Palace, now the home of the President of India as well as the nearby Secretariat and Parliament buildings, all designed by the famed architect, Lutyens. No visit of Delhi is complete without a visit to the impressive Qutab Minar complex with its tower, mosque and the Alai Darwaza entrance gate, all built by the first Muslim dynasty to rule India. End your sightseeing excursion at the stunning Humayun’s Tomb, an important landmark in the history of Mughal architecture, for it marks the advent of grand tombs set in gardens designed in the Persian manner. Enjoy a cup of coffee at the Coffee House on College Street. The history of the Coffee House can be traced to Albert Hall, which was founded in April 1876. Notable citizens, including Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose, were frequent visitors. It became a meeting place for poets, artistes, literati and people from the world of art and culture. In 1958, the management decided to shut down the Coffee House, but it was re-opened the same year, after professors of Presidency College and Calcutta University rushed off a special petition to the government, to save the heritage place. As one of the oldest, Christian burial grounds in the city, the earliest grave dates to 1768 and the last memorial, was erected in 1895. From here continue to Kolkata’s synagogue, maintained by two Muslim families. Kolkata’s Jewish heritage is an interesting one, although little known outside of India. This evening you will be transferred to Kolkata’s Howrah railway station where you board the Maharajas’ Expre ss train for a welcome reception and brief orientation. See the Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque, Raj Ghat, the spot where Gandhi was cremated following his assassination in 1948. As we drive through Delhi’s ‘imperial city’ we see the city of the British Raj, with its grand Viceroy’s Palace, now the home of the President of India as well as the nearby Secretariat and Parliament buildings, all designed by the famed architect, Lutyens. Enjoy your farewell lunch of delectable delights at one of Delhi’s well-known restaurants. Later this afternoon you will transfer to your hotel, The Imperial Hotel (Heritage room)

Day Twelve – Delhi B,L No visit of Delhi is complete without a visit to the impressive Qutab Minar complex with its tower, mosque and the Alai Darwaza entrance gate, all built by the first Muslim dynasty to rule India. End your sightseeing excursion at the stunning Humayun’s Tomb, an important landmark in the history of Mughal architecture, for it marks the advent of grand tombs set in gardens designed in the Persian manner. Lunch at a lovely restaurant surrounded by Delhi’s famed Lodi Gardens.

Day Thirteen – Delhi B This morning visit Delhi’s multitude of textile markets. Afternoon at leisure for last minute shopping or to enjoy your hotel’s facilities. Very late this evening you will be transferred to Delhi’s International Airport in time to board your flight.

Day Fourteen - Delhi/Home Depending on your international flight depart very early this morning on your flight home.
