We were driving past a thrift store on a busy street. In the window, there was a red velvet sofa dominating their Christmas display, and it was love at first sight for me. I made Himself turn the car around so I could get a second look. “I have to have it,” I said, not taking my eyes off of it for even a second. With his usual sigh at such pronouncements, he parked the car and went in to discuss it with the manager. When he came back he said, “You can’t have it. At least not until after Christmas.” About a month later Himself and son Sean went to the store and picked up the 1835 Regency couch. I watched out of the window as they turned into our driveway with the red velvet gleaming and carved rosewood trim shining in the sun. It was tied to the top of our station wagon. It’s been part of Christmas and every other family occasion ever since. The red velvet gave way to a green print. en we tore it apart to redo it from the springs on out and covered it with a paisley design. It became clear that the end was growing near. Legs splintered and broke. Son-in-law David did his best to rebuild it and keep it useful. Grandbabies HERSELF by Margaret Frost e thrift store couch were changed on it. Dogs chewed their biscuits on it. Impromptu meals were spilled. Laughs were generated from impromptu discussions as guests sat on it. en Himself pointed out that it was on couch life support. We looked at every alternative, but none would do. is Christmas it breathed its last breath. Guests were invited for New Year’s Day. Any one of them could have plunged into physical damage by sitting on our sofa. David examined it closely. Himself and others checked it over. Daughters Amy and Liz, who could remember no other couch in our living room, both pronounced it past redemption. We shopped for a new sofa and finally found one that would do. But losing the old one was wrenching. Like parting with an old friend. e new one is tidy and safe. It will grace the living room and no doubt gather memories, but none will ever take the place of the thrift store find. When you are sick I’m under the blankets. How about when someone would cut the cheese. How about in the old days you could walk into the post office and look at real wanted posters. e best memories come from bad ideas, done with best friends. Not to brag or anything but I can forget what I’m doing while I’m doing it. Remember putting pennies on the railroad tracks and watching the trains smash them. en you had to find them because they would go flying. L’l Dude’s jokes: Where do pencils go on vacation? Pennsylvania. Why did the cheerleader cross the road? To get her quarter back. Why can’t you trust the king of the jungle? Because he’s a lion. I don’t know what they pay these pizza delivery guys, but they couldn’t pay me enough. How long ago did they start making those magnets that everyone puts on their fridge? It’s free advertising. Back in the '50s we use to sneak into the Lake eater. One guy would pay (we all chipped in) and he would walk around and let us in the exit door. We always slid down the steps leading up to restrooms because they were carpeted. Most of us never had carpet in our homes. Understanding and speaking more than one language can set people apart, particularly in the professional sector. The Eton Institute, which offers language and commu- nication instruction, says learning a foreign language offers many benefits. Among them are: a boost in brain power, memory improvement, proficiency in multitasking and improvement in the usage and understanding of one’s first language. It may seem complicated, but aspiring polyglots can employ various strategies to learn a new language in a relatively short period of time. • Make it fun. e more you enjoy something, the more likely you are to stick with it. at notion applies to learning a foreign language. Take up the task with a friend. Find an entertaining outlet for your knowledge, such as being able to watch foreign films or listen to opera. • Use flashcards.
