– President's Pen –

Greetings RIRRs! Hard to believe that the year is practically over. Our final club event of the year will be the Beat Santa 5K on Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. in Portsmouth. It is always a great time whether you run or not, so please join us for some holiday cheer. Details can be found on the club website.

The annual awards banquet will be Jan. 28, 2017 at Davenport's in East Providence (same as last year). Details and signups will be coming soon. Solange has generously volunteered to coordinate the awards for New England Cup and Iron Woman/Man awards – typically that solicitation comes on some website named Facebook, but in case you are the other person who isn't on Facebook, please reach out to Solange to provide your credentials.

Lastly, wishing every member and their families much happiness this holiday season, and please don't forget our armed forces, many of who will be deployed away from home.

Tarzan Brown Mystic River Run <

Mystic, Conn. – November 6, 2016

A beautiful, partly sunny day was the setting for nearly 500 runners along the scenic Mystic River. The race starts in downtown Mystic, adjacent to the Hop and Hound Restaurant on Pearl Street. The race course is an out-and-back along Scenic Drive, which parallels and offers spectacular views of the Mystic River. Scenic Drive is also closed to traffic.

The post-race, nearby in Cottrell Park, and also along the river, was the usual clam chowder and brown bread (excellent), along with cider and ap-ples. No goodie bags, but a very nice long-sleeved polyester shirt. I hadn't done this race in a few years, but it was still business as usual, an efficient and well-organized event. The race started at 1:30 p.m., and the awards finished at 3 pm. The post-race continues until the clam chowder is finished.

KUDOS to the members of the Coast Guard Acad-emy from nearby New London. They handled the post-entry registration and the post-race party, as well as provided endless enthusiasm and motivation along the race route. Excellent job. This is a race everyone should try.

Taunton YMCA Turkey Trot <

Taunton, Mass. – November 13, 2016

This is a race I have run three years in a row now. The last two years, I was recovering from health is-sues and ran pretty slow. This year, I am feeling bet-ter. I am definitely not back to where I was, but I ran better this time than I did in 2015 and 2014. In

Jack Howley once again gave the Taunton YMCA Turkey Trot and its five-mile course a thumbs up!

the end, this race was good progress for me. I broke a 10-minute pace in five miles for the first time in a while and I felt fine at the end. I think I could have banged out another three, or even four if I had to.

The race course winds through the old Taunton State Hospital campus and then has a small loop through residential Taunton, It has some slight rolls and lots of curvy winds through the hospital cam-pus, but it is mostly very flat. You usually get a good tech shirt and something worthwhile in the goody bag. Hello, free Tom's toothpaste! I recommend this race to get you ready for the Mews, Pie Run, and Trot Off Your Turkey.

Philadelphia Marathon <

Philadelphia, Penn. – November 20, 2016

“The Right to go YOUR DISTANCE” is the tagline the organizers of the 2016 version of the Philadelphia Marathon adopted for the races this year. Tradition-ally there are 3 races – an 8k, a half, and a full mara-thon. Until this year, the half and full were run at the same time; however, a change was made to run the half and full on different days, which created the opportunity for runners to compete in the “Rocky Challenge” and run all three races. Quoting my philosophical brother, Ted, who once lamented: “I may be dumb but I'm not stupid.” Same here, so I opted simply for the full. I last ran it in 2013 and I had a great experience.

2

A complete map of the Philadelphia Marathon.

Expo - Held at the Philadelphia Convention Center, and since the half was run on Saturday, the event hall was much more accessible that day since it was only folks running the full. Decent-sized event, doz-ens of vendors, well put together.

Course - Really good ... starts with your back facing the Art Museum (think Rocky steps), and you head through Center City (downtown) before reaching the Delaware River and heading south for two miles. Roads are wide enough to where you are un-encumbered to run your own pace by the time you reach mile 1. After mile 4, the course turns back to-ward Center City via an area called South Street (think Thayer Street times 5 or 10), and up into what is known as University City (home of Drexel, UPenn, and I think Temple U). From there, runners pass by the Philadelphia Zoo and into Fairmount Park, where the only notable hill on the course is at mile 11. Down to the banks of the Schuykill River, you go South toward the start line and the Museum before crossing over the river and heading North along Boat House Row and into a village called Ma-nayunk at mile 22. After the turnaround point, you retrace those four miles back to the finish.

Fan Support - Great! There are areas where there is very little out near the zoo, but outside of that, it is consistent, and at times, quite raucous. Center City saw fans three and four deep, and Manayunk re-minds me of Boston College on Marathon Mon-day. The finish line is packed as well.

My Race - Not great, not bad. If I said to you, “Re-member that really windy few days we had back in November?” you would probably say you did be-cause it was several days of persistent strong wind,

and chilly too. Well, the marathon was right in the middle of that, and the wind was significant enough that most experienced runners concluded that PRs would be in short supply that day.

My goal was under 3:25, and given the conditions, I knew it would be a stretch, so I didn't even wear my watch on my wrist, but rather on my belt so I'd be able to see my splits afterwards. My plan was to keep in close contact with the 3:25 group as much as I could, and that was the case for 90% of the race. My splits were all in the 7:45 range until mile 23, when they crept over 8 and then over 9. In the end, I landed at 3:31:29 and the GPS said it was 26.49 miles. My training was decent for this cycle, and if not for the wind, I think I had a decent shot at hitting my goal. For as challenging as the wind was, I can say that fortunately it had calmed from Satur-day night, where it was in the 40 mph range, and it was mostly 25-30, and even better, no rain or snow. So while it could have been better, it cer-tainly could have been worse too.

Logistics - Drove down with Matt and Scott on Sat-urday morning ... 275 miles, about five hours. Stayed at the Sheraton on 17th Street – fantastic lo-cation for this race ... four blocks to start one way, five blocks to expo the other way ... convenient res-taurants nearby, and while the reviews of the hotel generally aren't great, we had a great experience. Wonderful view from the 19th floor. Two minor complaints – no fridge in the room, and no hot tub at the pool.

This was my third Philly Marathon, and I expect there will be a fourth for me.
