A message from AGRI Chair, Sam Dilcock
Hello, great to hear that members have been travelling far and wide to a5end AGRI events. The Bri=sh Wool Marke=ng Board (BWMB) hosted a YFC group of young sheep producers to see first-‐hand the journey of wool, and 48 young farmers from England, Wales and Scotland travelled to France for a marke=ng master class and farm visits. This =es in well with our AGRI Forum 2017 marke=ng theme, which is on Saturday 22 April 2017 at NFYFC’s Annual Conven=on in Torquay.

AHDB has taken on management of the Bright Crop careers iniHaHve, as of the beginning of September. The move is part of a wider AHDB review of its role in addressing the industry skills shortage and complements its exisHng work on agricultural apprenHceships and school-‐level educaHon. It marks an enhanced commitment to “help ensure the agriculture and horHculture industries are able to develop and a5ract workers with the skills needed to operate effecHvely.”

Bright ideas to a5ract bright young people
A 2015 government report showed the agri-‐food industry has five =mes more skilled trade jobs than other UK industries which are generally difficult to fill. AHDB Chief Execu=ve, Jane King, said: “We recognise the food and farming sectors can do more to improve their image with young people making decisions about their careers. Ensuring the industry a5racts the brightest of the next genera=on is vital to its long-‐term viability. “Over the coming months, we’ll be looking at where and how we can capitalise on opportuni=es to show young people our industry is exci=ng, progressive and sophis=cated, offering a range of rewarding and fulfilling career op=ons.” Previously, Bright Crop was run by FACE (Farming and Countryside Educa=on) and partly funded by AHDB, with addi=onal sponsors from across the agri-‐food supply chain. It has promoted careers in the food and farming industry through careers events, school visits, web and press ac=vity, with the support of 380 ambassadors.

The definiHon of ‘acHve farmer’ was widely discussed at the October CEJA working group meeHng. The EC proposal includes greater discreHon in the applicaHon of the ‘acHve farmer’ clause at naHonal level. CEJA has welcomed the definiHon as a first step to improve the targeHng of direct payments. However, CEJA believes that this definiHon needs to be strengthened, improved and remain mandatory throughout the EU. The next CEJA working group meeHng takes place in Breganze, Italy, 3-‐4 November.
