INTRODUCTIONFollowing the success of the inaugural India IP & Innovation Forum, ManagingIP is delighted to present the 2nd annual event to be held in Delhi in 2013.

When it comes to IP, India is in the midst of an important paradigm shift. Sincethe recognition of the vital role played by IP to India’s developing industries, anincreasing amount of attention is being paid to the nuances of IP law and itsdevelopment in the region.

The need for a stronger domestic IP system remains a pressing one. In the lastdecade, India’s IP system has undergone thorough reform to bring it in line withinternational standards, unique issues remain and new complexities are rising up.

THE EVENTLast year we covered issues ranging from how to get the strongest patent andtrade mark registrations from India’s Patent and Trade Mark Offices, to the bestmeans for enhancing the scope of software patent protection. This year’s forumwill bring an updated and fresh programme of discussions and practical advicepertaining to the evolving issues encountered by India’s many businesses striv-ing to protect their intellectual property and to monetise their intellectual assets.Given the series of important pharmaceutical patent decisions in the last 12months, including the compulsory licence over Nexavar, Cipla’s victory in theDelhi High Court and the hearings in the long-running Glivec patent case in theSupreme Court, discussions over pharmaceutical patents are bound to feature.

Furthermore, topics such as parallel importation, trade mark infringement andhow the smartphone patent wars could affect India will be addressed by lead-ing experts in the field. Attention will also be paid to the issue of the necessaryfiling of paperwork which corporations in India must achieve in order to estab-lish the extent to which each of their patents has been worked; accurately doc-umenting information regarding revenue generation and sales of each patentedproduct. This is a complex issue and good guidance will be considered of greatvalue by the in-house lawyers that form the backbone of the attendance.

The forum will bring together leading counsel with domestic and internationaladvisers to impart their expertise through a series of high-level panel discussions.
