Victoria Clout Active Bedfordshire Project Manager

A SEPT Community Health Services Project providing the older adults across Bedfordshire evidence based physical activity and exercise sessions delivered by trained volunteers. The project aims to enable and empower adults over 50 across Bedfordshire to become more physically active through the development of community programmes delivered by training volunteers. A wide range of activities are delivered from strength and balance classes, health and wellbeing talks and walking sessions. I volunteered for NHS Bedfordshire when I was a student at De Montfort University (Sport and Exercise Science); I walked an older lady in Bedford around the Embankment once a week. Within weeks the positive changes in physical and psychological behaviourwereevident.Volunteeringgavemetheopportunitytowork with a real person which enhanced my learning in lectures about the aging process. After completing my MSc Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation (University of Kent) I worked as a lecturer and freelance sports therapist for two years. After building up a client base that would support full time earnings two discs in my cervical spine herniated and I now have permanent nerve damage in the left hand and arm making hands on work very difficult. I stayed working within health and rehabilitation and now manage the Active Bedfordshire Project.

Gordon Brady - Business Interaction Manager University of Bedfordshire

Gordon Brady began his working life in the British Army with the Royal Engineers, training as an Electrical Engineer and serving in the UK, Germany and saw active service during the first Gulf War. After time served in the Army he worked as a manager in Retail Catering and quickly developed the strong man management skills required to successfully operate a fast moving multi unit catering business.

Gordon was keen to utilise these new skills in his area of expertise as an electrical engineer and joined a company operating in the Automotive Industry as a service contractor in order to catch up on trends in the civilian workplace. This provided a springboard for him to run Bead Technologies Ltd with just £150 - installing; operating and maintaining robotic dispense equipment for BMW, Jaguar, Airbus and General Motors throughout Europe. He sold the company last October to work with the University of Bedfordshire’s Computer Science department as a business liaison, reaching out to industry and linking them with the institution.
