McEwan can certainly re- call some of the events that ultimately led to the forma- tion of this proud club, a club that has played in 32 of the 49 grand finals. The Dragons have won 18 of those and number 19 is not beyond them. ‘‘Mike Keegan was a liquor traveller in those days and I was a publican at the Mt Gillen Hotel and he used to pester me every week for months on end to start a rugby league team. ‘‘He knew I had been as- sociated with Wests in Bris- bane and my family has been with them since the 1920s so I wrote to Wests in Brisbane asking them to send us some jerseys and things and they said ‘see what they can do’ but noth- ing turned up,’’ McEwan said. ‘‘It was on the Wednesday prior to the first game that we had no jerseys and that was when Jack Cotterill, who started Kings Canyon, that’s when he came to me and said ‘you’ve got a foot- ball team but no jerseys’,’’ he said. McEwan said that Cotterill had jerseys avail- able but not before some friendly verbal fire between the pair. ‘‘He (Cotterill) said ‘well I’ve got jerseys’ and I said ‘if you lend them to me for Saturday, I’d be your mate for life’ and he said ‘I wouldn’t lend you anything, McEwan’.’’ ‘‘So I was about to tell him what do with them but he looked at me and he said ‘you know what I’d do with them?’ and I said ‘what?’ and he said ‘I’d give them to you’,’’ McEwan said. The jerseys were white soccer ones that were made from a very heavy wool. ‘‘They were white with a red ‘V’ and consequently that’s the reason they’re our colours now.’’ Wests is the only club in the CARFL that has main- tained its original name and colours. Another proud former player who represented the Dragons from 1979-81, Pritchard, who played as a front rower, won the Keegan Medal in his last year. Pritchard said there was a good portion of Wests players who had won the medal in the last 49 years. ‘‘Out of 49 years, 12 Wests players have won the Keegan Medal,’’ he said. Doolan started at the club at senior ranks in 1998 and has been a part of the club’s 2004-06, 2007 and 2009 prem- iership teams. Memories will flow RUGBY LEAGUE Nick Kossatch WESTS Dragons will cele- brate 50 years joining United Magpies as the CARFL foundation clubs. The Dragons will have a function tonight at the Gil- len Club and spokesperson Harry Stubbins said the weekend would feature much reminiscing. ‘‘We’re having a formal dinner tonight and expect people to arrive by six and be eating by about 7.15pm,’’ Stubbins said. ‘‘We’re hop- ing for about 120 people . . . and the players will turn up about 8pm after their game.’’ He added tonight would feature some formalities and awards. Tomorrow will be a ‘‘re- covery day’’ at the Gillen Club before the 50th Year Anniversary Dinner at the Convention Centre. ‘‘Then on Sunday, we’re going down to Anzac Oval at 10am,’’ Stubbins said. There will be a Golden Oldies touch football game from 10.30am then a fare- well function at the Gillen Club from 12.30pm. Stubbins said there were too many good players to mention at Wests, but said there were three coaches who have won three con- secutive grand finals each. ‘‘Mike Keegan, the found- ing member of the league, won the early three and then Archie Tanna won a set of three and also Warren Collits,’’ Stubbins said. ‘‘We got people coming from pretty much every state to celebrate with us and the founding member Mike Keegan has been the driving force, they named the medal after him for the work he’s done.’’ Ready set to celebrate history RUGBY LEAGUE Nick Kossatch THE Central Australian Rugby Foot- ball League (CARFL) will be celebrat- ing 50 years since its formation in 1963 on the back of a meeting on March 27 of that year. While cricket and Australian Rules football was the main backdrop of the sporting landscape in Alice Springs during that time, rugby league became a part of the scene too. The meeting prompted the forma- tion of the CARFL and rugby joined Australian Rules as a main winter season sport. The two founding clubs of the new league, Wests and United, played the first official match at Traeger Park — with Wests winning 6-4. Anzac Oval became the new home ground for the CARFL in 1966 with the competition consisting of two games each week. Wes Rose was the patron and Mike Keegan was the main architect in the formation of the league. Several years later in 1967, the Keegan Medal was introduced to award the league’s best and fairest player. The league enjoyed the talents of Archie Tanna, who played and also coached the Wests Dragons in the 1980s. Tanna was the attraction with his elegant swerving with verve through defences, often launching the Dragons to domination. The CARFL has enjoyed many other highlights throughout its im- pressive journey and among those was when the Broncos and Illawara Steelers played on Anzac Oval in 1992. In February next year, the league will introduce the Parramatta Eels into their sporting calendar to play trial matches at a ‘‘new’’ Anzac Oval until 2017. Rugby’s rich past has and will continue to be the pathway to a burgeoning future for ‘‘the greatest game of all’’. Quite appropriately, tonight marks the 50-year anniversary game between Wests and United for the Founding Club Charity Shield and so a huge crowd is expected. Celebrations will take place from 6.30pm tomorrow at the Alice Springs Convention Centre and the evening will feature Tommy Raudonikis and Benny Elias as guest speakers. Mike Keegan will present the Keegan Medal to the CARFL best and fairest winner. Feathers certain to fly at shield clash with Magpies RUGBY LEAGUE Nick Kossatch IN A weekend of 50-year celebrations for the Wests Dragons and the CARFL, the Dragons meet the United Magpies at Anzac Oval tonight from 6pm. The two teams will play for the Founding Club Charity Shield and it will be an enthralling prelude to the preliminary final be- tween these sides next week. Wests captain Nathan Coelli was pleased with some aspects of his team’s performance against pacesetters Vikings last week. But he wants a more consistent effort through- out on the back of a defens- ive focus at training. ‘‘We still got a few blokes to come back from injury,’’ Coelli said. ‘‘Jethro Campbell, who had done his ankle, will hopefully be right for tonight. Then we got the two Nelson boys (Tim and Dean) to come back.’’ United Magpies coach Geoff Bates will be hoping for another win, but admit- ted his team could ill afford to give up the ball against some of the better teams. Tonight looms as a test for the Magpies that may be strengthened with the re- turn of Wayd, Clint and Peter Nibbs. ‘‘It’s a 50th anniversary and a shield involved, so we’ll have a crack at them,’’ Bates said. ‘‘We will go in as hard as we can even though it’s a dead rubber.’’ Vikings will be eager to tune up for their grand final in a fortnight when they meet Memo Bulls in the late game. The Bulls will only have pride to play for after they was officially knocked out of finals contention by the Magpies last week. Vikings will be almost at full strength with only Tui Ford Junior absent. Vikings played an exciting game against second-placed Wests last week. While the Vikings have a galaxy of stars such as Schaylen Parai, Chaz Solomon, Nathan Johnson and Junior Saena, Memo will rely on Geoff Radford, Hami Goldsmith and Brendon Taylor-McInnes to at least be competitive.
