H ighly rated filly Terminology (Star Witness) will make a last-ditch attempt to qualify for next week’s $2,000,000

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) after her first start was derailed by severe interference.

The prospects of the boom filly, who won a barrier trial by more than ten lengths prior to her first start, making the field for the rich 13

January Magic Millions race were hindered when she finished fourth in the Wyong Magic Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) on 21 December.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained juvenile suffered a check out of the barriers when fourth to unbeaten colt Jonker (Spirit Of Boom), Skyray (Smart Missile) and the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Bondi (Snitzel) in the Wyong race.

Following the setback at Wyong, connections have opted to run Terminology at

the Gold Coast over 1100 metres on Saturday in a bid to qualify for the Magic Millions feature a week later.

Tim Clark, who rode Terminology at Wyong, will retain the ride on the Star Witness (Starcraft) filly on Saturday in a race which received 14 nominations including the Tony McEvoy-trained Sunlight (Zoustar) and the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Commissioner (Stratum).

Bott told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that Terminology had arrived in Queensland last week and had taken no harm from the interference she suffered at Wyong.

“Physically, she came out of the run in great order. We were able to push on as planned and travel her up quite quickly to the Gold Coast,” Bott said.

Bott said Terminology, who was a $300,000 purchase from the Newhaven Park draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year, had improved since her first start.

“She is up on the Gold Coast already, she travelled up last week, and we would love to try and qualify her for the Magic Millions race and (Saturday’s race) is the most logical way of trying to get her there,” Bott said.

“She is a filly of that standard and, irrespective of the (Magic Millions 2YO Classic), we were keen to give her a trip away and give her that experience.

“If she is able to win on Saturday the prize money would have her close to making the field. It will be a week back up but it has been proven over the past few years that it can be done successfully.

“She is the type physically who would have no issues backing up. She is a lovely, big strong filly who thrives on her work.”

Three of the past five Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners, including last year’s victor Houtzen (I Am Invincible) have raced the week before the $2,000,000 Gold Coast race. The other two were Real Surreal (Real Saga) (2013) and Le Chef (Exceed And Excel) (2015).

Meanwhile, Sunlight, who won first up at the Gold Coast over 900 metres on 23 December by four and three quarter lengths, is also a certain starter on Saturday before backing up into the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

The daughter of first crop stallion Zoustar (Northern Meteor) was third at her first start in October in the Maribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington before McEvoy gave the filly a freshen up with the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in mind.

‘’Running seven days out from the grand final, there’s always risks involved with any horse doing that but she’s a gross-doing filly and she’s very sound,’’ McEvoy told Racing.com.

‘’She needs another run before she gets to the pressure cooker of the Magic Millions so I am looking forward to the Gold Coast on Saturday.

‘’Certainly if I was worried, I wouldn’t be doing it, but everything I’ve asked her to do all the way through she’s handled with ease and wants more.’’

McEvoy, who scratched Sunlight from the Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben on 16 December due to a wide barrier, said the filly had progressed nicely since her first up victory.

‘’She’s taken no harm from it and she bounced out of it really well but that little sweeten-up (break) I gave her, she just did a little too well on me and I’m sure she needs another race,’’ he said.

Picaro on trial for Karaka MillionThe Gary Portelli-trained Picaro (Pierro) will run in a two-year-old handicap over 1200 metres Warwick Farm on Saturday in the hope of gaining a start in the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on 27 January. The gelding, who ran second in his only trial to date at Rosehill in December, was purchased Laurel Oak Bloodstock for NZ$100,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling from the Hallmark Stud draft. "Picaro is a very nice horse and he is on trial for the Karaka Million," Portelli said. "He is a Pierro gelding and he has shown plenty at home and ran a nice second in a trial at

Rosehill. I don't think he's a Slipper type but if he can get to the Ellerslie race then we would take him." Click here to view Saturday’s Warwick Farm weights.

Lloyd to ride Mishani BullittJeff Lloyd will ride three-year-old Mishani Bullitt (Show A Heart) in an 1800 metres handicap at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Trainer Chris Anderson said the colt would tackle the three-year-old race on Saturday rather than waiting for next week’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m). Fourth in the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) at Doomben as a two-year-old, Mishani Bullitt was runner-up to Saint Patricks Day (Excelebration) at the Sunshine Coast on 26 December at his most recent start.

Caulfield options for Royal ApplauseRoyal Applause (Congrats) will chase a fourth straight win when she heads to Caulfield on Sunday, which has been rescheduled because of expected high temperatures in Melbourne on Saturday. The Symon Wilde-trained five-year-old was most recently seen winning over 1600 metres at Moonee Valley on 23 December and she has been nominated for three races at Caulfield with Wilde saying he will make a decision later in the week as to which race she runs in. "I think at this stage it will either be the 1800-metre race for fillies and mares and claim or the 1600-metre race without a claim," Wilde said. "We'll just weigh it up." The other Caulfield race Royal Applause is nominated in is a Benchmark 78 (200m). Click here to view Sunday’s Caulfield weights.

Fullazaboot wins trialMagic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) aspirant Fullazaboot (Sepoy) won his barrier trial at the Sunshine Coast yesterday and now trainer Stuart Kendrick will have to play a waiting game to see whether he makes the field for the $2,000,000 race at the Gold Coast on 13 January. After drawing a wide barrier in Saturday's B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Doomben Kendrick took the chance not to run the colt, who currently sits 15th in the order of entry for the lucrative race.

Bondi likely to trialCo-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden say Bondi (Snitzel) will likely barrier trial at Warwick Farm tomorrow as he builds towards a tilt at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on 13 January. Bondi made his career debut by running second in the Breeders' Plate (Listed, 1000m) and was most recently seen running third behind Jonker (Spirit Of Boom) in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) on 21 December. Bondi was purchased by

China Horse Club, Newgate and Winstar for $400,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Strawberry Hill draft. Click here to view the Warwick Farm barrier trial acceptances.

Whypeeo to run in GuineasTrainer Toby Edmonds has said Whypeeo (I Am Invincible) will still run in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast on 13 January, despite his disappointing eighth in the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben on Saturday. Whypeeo went into Saturday’s race off the back of a fine victory in the Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) but was unable to build on that performance on Saturday, finishing four lengths adrift of the winner Pierata (Pierro).

Global Glamour arrives on CoastDual Group One winner Global Glamour (Star Witness) arrived at the Gold Coast yesterday ahead of her first up tilt at the lucrative Magic Millions race day on 13 January. The Gai

Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained four-year-old has won two barrier trials in December, the latest at Randwick over 1045 metres on 29 December. “I thought it was a really good hit out from her at the trials. We are a little bit undecided about what race she will run in, so she will be nominated for the sprint race and the fillies and mares race,” Bott told ANZ Bloodstock News.

Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on 12 August, will be aimed at the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in the autumn. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt cruised home into third place behind stablemate Global Glamour in a 1045 metres Randwick barrier trial on 29 December, beaten five and three quarter lengths. “We didn’t ask too much from him with the two horses in the lead in that trial went at a good tempo, so he was allowed to find his feet and made some good ground late,” Bott said.

Hyeronimus picks up Millions mountSydney-based jockey Adam Hyeronimus will head to the Gold Coast on 13 January to partner the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained dual Group Three winner Sweet Redemption (Snitzel) in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m). Hyeronimus steered the five-year-old to victory in the Toy Show Handicap (Gr 3, 1300m) first up last preparation but the mare failed to fire in her next two starts and has not been seen since her tenth place finish in the Golden Pendant Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill in September.

Bring It Home Pop soreTalented three-year-old Bring It Home Pop (Rothesay) has been ruled out of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas after two below par performances recently. The Darryl Hansen-trained Bring It Home Pop has been spelled following his run in the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben on Saturday, a race won by Pierata.

Pendeloque to bypass Gold CoastTrainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed that Pendeloque (Snitzel) will not run in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on 13 January. The filly posted the second victory of her career when she won over 1100 metres at Randwick on Saturday, but despite that performance Ryan has decided against sending the daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) to Queensland.

McEvoy positive about Tan Tat TrustingTrainer Tony McEvoy has said he is pleased with the progress new acquisition Tan Tat Trusting (Trusting), who will make his debut for the stable in the Sheen Group Handicap (1600m) at Sandown Lakeside today. Formerly trained by Henry Dwyer, Tan Tat Trusting has raced twice winning once and running third on his career debut. "I've got to learn more about him but I'm liking what I'm seeing at this stage," McEvoy said. "He'll run a solid race and get better as the distances get longer."

Cumani pair likely to take Sandown chancesTrainer Matt Cumani has said he still intends to run a promising youngsters Fille De Charlie (Myboycharlie) and Wetakemanhattan (Manhattan Rain) at Sandown Lakeside today, despite the pair both drawing wide barriers. Fille De Charlie drew 11 of 14 in her race and the unbeaten Wetakemanhattan drew 12 of 14 in his race. “I need to have a good chat with the owners and see what we might do but both of them break quite well from the barriers so we might take our chances,’’ Cumani told Racing.com. “The alternative is to go to Caulfield (on Sunday) where it will probably be a little bit tougher and we don’t know what we’ll get with the barrier draw.’’

Etah James spelledMeanwhile, Matt Cumani has said Etah James (Raise The Flag), who was runner-up in Monday’s Bagot Handicap (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington, will now be spelled. Etah James has won five of her eight starts including four races this campaign which culminated in Monday’s stakes placing. Etah James finished second to the Darren Weir-trained Parthesia, who is also by the White Robe Lodge-based stallion Raise The Flag (Sadler’s Wells). ‘’I think we’ll probably give her a little freshen-up, not too long a spell because she’s quite a big filly and she puts on weight very quickly, but I’d like to get her out to the paddock for a couple of weeks and then aim for something over the autumn,’’ Cumani told Racing.com.

Ace High back in workTalented three-year-old Ace High (High Chaparral), a dual Group One winner in the spring, is back in work at trainer David Payne’s Rosehill stables. The colt, who won the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), has not raced since his success at Flemington on 4 November. “He looks a million dollars, he’s put on weight and has come back much stronger,’’ Payne said. “He’s a big boy, he just had to fill out a bit. He’s put on more muscle, some of the weight will come off but you can see across his rear he’s filled out nicely.’’ Ace High will target the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick in the autumn.

Goodwood aim for Vega MagicDual Group One winner Vega Magic (Lope De Vega), who is currently recovering from a paddock accident, will likely defend his SAJC Goodwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) crown according to Lindsay Park. A Sydney/Melbourne early autumn campaign has been ruled out for the sprinter after he took fright during a storm and ran into a fence. "It was a nasty cut that required 40 stitches," co-trainer David Hayes said. "There were no problems with tendons or anything. Infection was the risk, so we've taken no chances with him. He was the fastest horse in the paddock ... he hit the fence first." Vega Magic, who ran second in The Everest (1200m) last preparation, has not been seen since he ran seventh in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington in November.

Caulfield to race on Sunday due to heatForecasts temperatures of 40 degrees in Melbourne has prompted officials to move meetings including the metropolitan Caulfield program. The nine-race Caulfield meeting will now be moved from Saturday to Sunday afternoon when temperatures are predicted to be 20 degrees cooler, while the seven-race card at Mornington scheduled for Sunday will now be staged on Saturday and brought forward to avoid the hottest part of the day. Acceptances for the Caulfield meeting will still be taken today and Mornington acceptances will also close this morning.

Gawler meeting moved to SundayForecast for hot weather on Saturday has prompted South Australian racing officials to put the metropolitan meeting at Gawler back a day. Thoroughbred Racing South Australia announced the change yesterday. "TRSA advise due to extreme weather forecast for Saturday the Gawler Saturday meeting has been rescheduled to Sunday and the Naracoorte Sunday meeting has been rescheduled to Monday 8 January," TRSA said on Twitter. The forecast for Melbourne on Saturday is 41 degrees, with Victorian officials yet to announce whether there will be any change to the Caulfield meeting scheduled for Saturday afternoon. McEvoy has cast removedJockey Kerrin McEvoy has had the cast taken off the broken hand he suffered when cantering Sugar Bella (Not A Single Doubt) to the barriers at Randwick three weeks ago. The movement in the hand has reportedly improved since his operation two weeks ago and McEvoy will now step up the exercises and re access in a fortnight.

Chad Lever makes race returnAfter suffering a fall at Scone in early August, jockey Chad Lever will make his comeback at Kembla Grange today. Lever suffered a small bleed on the brain and deep cut to his forehand following the accident. Lever has been booked to ride horses at the meeting, including two for leading trainer Chris Waller; Coltrane (Nicconi) in the in the maiden plate over 1300 metres and Auerbach (Denman) in race seven over 1500 metres.

O’Hara’s suspension dates alteredSydney-based jockey Kathy O’Hara is suspended from riding from tomorrow until 14 January after incurring a ban at Randwick on Monday. O’Hara applied to have her careless riding suspension dates altered, starting tomorrow, with Racing NSW stewards acceding to the request.

Burrells remains in intensive careNew South Wales apprentice Nyssa Burrells remains in an induced coma at Liverpool Hospital four days after a fall at Warwick Farm. Burrells suffered a bleed on her brain after the incident at the jump outs on Friday. Racing NSW said yesterday that, Burrells’ condition was stable. "Dr Duckworth has reported that Nyssa remains stable in ICU at Liverpool Hospital with no change," a statement said. "Doctors are still monitoring her pressures and slowly decreasing her sedation." Burrells has other injuries which will be assessed and treated at a later date.

Big aims for Tauranga-winning stablematesAfter a dominant victory in yesterday’s Summer Cup (1400m) at Tauranga, Calligraphy (Perfectly Ready) could step into stakes company, with trainer Ross McCarroll earmarking the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes (Listed, 1600m) on 6 February as a possible target. “That was a really good win and I’ll look at a stakes race now, maybe the one at Tauherenikau and give her one more run before that,” McCarroll said. “She’s very honest and talented and probably needs a bit of cut in the ground.” Meanwhile, McCarroll also revealed

Contraband (Teofilo), who made a winning debut at the same meeting when taking out the Rob Pinny Ray White Commercial Maiden Stakes (1300m) could also now be aimed at stakes races.

Insight lives up to expectationsInsight (Shocking) lived up to trainer Stephen Marsh’s expectations when she made an impressive winning debut in a maiden over 1300 metres at Tauranga yesterday. In what was her fourth career start, Insight showed a good attitude to beat Charlie Zulu (Zed) by three and a half lengths. “All of her runs have been really good, the only time she got tripped up was on a heavy track at Waipa,” Marsh said. “She’s had a break and she’s come back a lot stronger. I think she’s a filly going places.” Insight holds Group One nominations for both the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) and the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).

Rain to help Darci MacTrainer Allan Sharrock believes the wet conditions will play to the strengths of Darci Mac (Darci Brahma) when he lines up in the Otago Summer Cup (1400m) at Omakau today. Sharrock sent Darci Mac south in the hope he would enjoy the wet tracks but has been thwarted with dry conditions. “I sent him down there in the hope of striking off tracks, but he’s struck good ones,” said Sharrock, who part owns the gelding. “He’s still gone good races and been a bit unlucky. He’s got 60 kilograms, but they’re getting a bit of rain down there and that will help him. He’ll come home after this one. He’s won over $130,000, he’s been a very good servant to the stable.”

Kawi on track for TelegraphMeanwhile, Darci Mac’s multiple Group One winning stablemate Kawi (Savabeel) is reportedly on track heading into his next assignment, the Telegraph Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Trentham on 20 January. The seven-year-old landed his seventh Group One race when he took out the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on 9 December, but missed his intended run in the Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last month after suffering a stone bruise. “He galloped super this morning,” Sharrock said. “He’ll go to the trials at Cambridge on Tuesday week. I’ll put the blinkers on and let Jason (Waddell) get a feel of him.”

Daytona Red rising up ranksTrainer Shaune Ritchie believes that Daytona Red (Sebring) will only get better when he is stepped up in distance. The gelding secured his second win in as many appearances when he took out the Stella Artois Stakes (2100m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “They have been two very good efforts, he came from last at the 500m the first time and he’s finished off very strongly again,” Ritchie said. “He’s going to keep getting better as a stayer, he looks like he’ll get two miles as well.”

Te Akau Shark under injury cloudThe future of promising three-year-old Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) has been thrown into doubt after he was scratched from the Summer Cup (1400m) at Tauranga yesterday. The three-year-old colt won his first two starts, before running a respectable fourth in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and was then withdrawn from his next start at Hawke’s Bay on New Year’s Day. “He’s been feeling the hard ground and we’re just waiting for our team to go over him and give us a recommendation about what we do,” Richards said. “We’ll then sit down with syndicate manager David Ellis and talk it through.”

Bayliss wants New Zealand premiershipAfter winning his first Group One aboard Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge) in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie yesterday, jockey Jake Bayliss has expressed his intention to secure a contract to ride in Hong Kong and is willing to move to New Zealand permanently later this year to do so. "I was looking forward to just staying here until about March or April," Bayliss told RSN 927. "But, look, things are going very well and I've spoken to Mike Moroney and Lance O'Sullivan, and I think we might make a goal next season to come over next season and try and win the premiership. I'd love to go to Hong Kong on a contract and obviously you've got to win the premiership here to do so. So definitely that's a goal of mine.”

Boudot to join Hong Kong ranksJockey Pierre-Charles Boudot expressed his excitement about temporarily joining the Hong Kong jockey ranks yesterday. Boudot began his short-term contract at Sha Tin’s Lucky Start raceday on Monday with four rides, including two third placings. “Of course, knowing that I was going to be riding here in January and February, my wish was to ride one winner and I achieved that target. It was a very important win for me, I think,” said Boudot. “My first day at Sha Tin went well, the two horses I placed on ran nicely and hopefully it is the start of a good period.”

1. WINX (Street Cry): Cruised to nine consecutive wins in the calendar year including, of course, a third straight Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). Entitled to be rated world’s best ahead of Gun Runner (Candy Ride), Enable (Nathaniel), Redzel (Snitzel), Cracksman (Frankel) and Kitasan Black (Black Tide).

I’ve been foolish enough, previously, to question her opposition but I now accept it’s virtually irrelevant. It’s as meaningless and sacrilegious as looking for holes in Bradman’s batting average. Twenty-two straight wins (including

15 Group Ones) from 1300 metres to 2200 metres is incomparable.

As to the future, I’m not sure you should be packing your bags, just yet. My bet is that she won’t race anywhere other than Sydney and Melbourne. Pity The Everest (1200m) isn’t four weeks before the Cox Plate as she could win both.

2. THE EVEREST: A modern day record crowd of 33,512 came to Royal Randwick to see Redzel win the inaugural running of the $10,000,000 race and the betting turnover was also monumental. Even a sceptical Victorian has to acknowledge it was an undoubted success as a raceday.

However I’m not convinced it will remain in its current form after the first three years and I wonder just how they’ll assemble a high-quality, full field in 2018 especially if Redzel maintains his dominance. Anyone who paid up for a three-year-old last year will be gun shy about doing same this year and they won’t be queueing up to come from overseas (certainly not from Hong Kong as the situation stands now).

3. THE PEGASUS: The inaugural running of the Pegasus World Cup (Gr 1, 9f) at Gulfstream Park was in January 2017 even though it seems so much further back than that. It was won by Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) who then went on to a stunning World Cup win but flopped three times later in the year (hence his admission from paragraph one). He’s retired to Juddmonte, Kentucky.

The future of the Pegasus hinges on a private enterprise decision not on that of a race club or a governing body. Gun Runner is expected to have his final start in the $16,000,000 race on 27 January, after which he will retire to stand the 2018 season at Three Chimneys. The race might be competitive with the Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) placegetters Collected (City Zip) and West Coast (Flatter), both trained by Bob Baffert, likely to run along with Giant Expectations (Frost Giant) who upset Collected at Santa Anita on Boxing Day.

4. HUGH BOWMAN: Fitting that he rounded off the year with victory in the Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) after his great success in Australia and Hong Kong. Named world’s best jockey. Expecting more of the same in 2018.

5. REDZEL: Finished the year with six consecutive victories including the Everest and Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m). It is now simply ‘no contest’ as to who is the best sprinter in Australia. Expecting more of the same in 2018.

6. MARSHA (Acclamation): She became the highest-priced horse sold at a European auction, making a seemingly nonsensical 6,000,000 guineas (c. $11,000,000) at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

The Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) and Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) winner, trained by Sir Mark Prescott, was bought by MV Magnier, son of Coolmore Stud's John Magnier.

Well and truly eclipses the 2009 Australian record price of $3,850,000 paid for the multiple Group One winner Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice).

7. AIDAN O’BRIEN: A record 28 Group One wins in a year is entitled to a mention.

8. RUBY WALSH: Became the first jockey to ride four winners in a day at the Cheltenham Festival. He is the Festival's most successful rider with 56 wins. In August 2015, Walsh won the Australian Grand National (4500m) on Bashboy (Perugino).

9. CALIFORNIAN FIRES: More than 40 horses died and dozens more were badly injured when fire engulfed the San Luis Rey Downs training centre in California in December.

10. MARKUS JOOSTE: The former head of Steinhoff International Holdings NV, who quit amid an accounting scandal, is reportedly being sued by three South African lenders after a racehorse company he was a director of failed to meet its financial commitments. The ramifications are immense.

10. HENRY PLUMPTRE: The highly competent administrator left Godolphin after the failure to report an outbreak of strangles scandal. “The reputation and integrity of Godolphin is the most important aspect of what we do and this issue has impacted on that reputation," he said explaining his resignation. A reputation that has taken a bit of a battering here and abroad in recent years.

11. THE SALE OF CAMBRIDGE STUD: Where Plumptre will be chief executive… after the sale by Sir Patrick Hogan to Auckland couple Brendan and Jo Lindsay, former owners of Sistema Plastics.

12. GODOLPHIN and MAGIC MILLIONS: Vin Cox takes the Godolphin job while Barry Bowditch takes over at Magic Millions.

13. THE CLOSURE OF NEWMARKET SALES YARDS: The iconic sales venue will soon be apartments as Inglis exited the premises in its 150th year. Looking forward to the first sale (Classic) at Riverside Stables at Warwick Farm, commencing on 10 February.

14. LLOYD WILLIAMS WINS SIXTH MELBOURNE CUP: With Rekindling (High Chaparral), whom he bought as a yearling, so ‘fair play’ to him as our English and Irish friends would say but even the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) fears that it will become the world’s most boring race if Williams keeps winning it.

15. JOSEPH O’BRIEN SAVES THE DAY: O’Brien, just 24, provided the refreshing angle as he became the youngest trainer to win the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and usurped his father, who trained the runner-up and who’s yet to win the race.

16. HIGHLAND REEL (Galileo): Rounded off a great career with his win in the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m). Group One winner in three countries although no match for Wi nx in her first Cox Plate. After finishing five and half lengths behind the great mare in that 2015 Cox Plate, he then - next start - trounced the multiple Group One winner and two times Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Flintshire (Dansili) in his first Hong Kong

Vase win. Highland Reel subsequently went on to claim a further five Group/Grade One wins.

He is, of course, a son of the Australian-bred Danehill (Danzig) mare Hveger, the sister to Elvstroem and half-sister to Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus). She’s also produced dual Group Two winner Idaho (Galileo) and the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) runner-up Valdemoro (Encosta De Lago).

17. DAWR RESTRICTIONS ON HORSE MOVEMENT: From Hong Kong to Australia. This meant that no Australian horses competed at December’s International race meeting at Sha Tin but the first ‘real’ impact may be felt as early as next week with the Hong Kong Jockey Club believed to be absent from the Magic Millions sales.

18. ENABLE (Nathaniel): Underlined her class with a decisive win in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, beating Cloth Of Stars (Sea The Stars) who was bred by Victorian Peter Anastasiou.

19. KITASAN BLACK (Black Tide): Retires to Shadai Stallion Station after winning four Group Ones in 2017 including the Arima Kinen (Gr 1, 2500m) at his final appearance on Christmas Eve.

20. GUN RUNNER (Candy Ride): The Breeders' Cup Classic was his fourth straight Group One win achieved by an aggregate of 25 lengths.

21. HONOURABLE MENTIONS to the following local racetrack performers (behind Winx and Redzel): - Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock); Ace High (High Chaparral); She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain); Bonneval (Makfi); Shoals (Fastnet Rock); Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact); Egg Tart (Sebring); Happy Clapper (Teofilo) and Humidor (Teofilo).

Shooting To Win THE GUINEAS HORSE

In a galaxy of stars, he might be the brightest of them all

A powerful victory in last Saturday’s Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1350m) made Pierata (Pierro) a well deserved favourite for the $2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday week, 13 January.

Having now won two of the four races in the Queensland Summer Crown Series, Pierata, a close and unlucky second in another of the races, the BRC Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m), will earn for connections a $500,000 bonus if he can take out the Guineas on the Magic Millions raceday.

Trained in Sydney by Greg Hickman, Pierata must have a great chance of winning the bonus as he was most impressive last Saturday, coming from well back in the field to reach the lead about 100 metres from home then drawing away to win by two and a half lengths from Dinnigan (Snitzel) with Goodfella (Snitzel) just a long neck further back in third place. Race time was 1:18.76 with the last 600 metres covered in 35.15.

Hickman selected and purchased Pierata for $160,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, going there intent on buying a member of his sire’s first crop. Pierata was consigned by Kitchwin Hills on behalf of his breeder, Grahame Mapp’s Hobartville Stud.

The trainer’s judgement proved correct as Pierro (Lonhro) has made a great start with his first two crops which have so far yielded seven stakes winners (including one in South Africa) from his first 81 starters. Four of them are Group winners, and significantly they have shown the versatility

to win over distances ranging from 1000 metres to 2500 metres.

The still improving Pierata looks the best of Pierro’s male offspring seen to date but the young sire’s most important winner is the filly Pinot, successful last spring in the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m). Other highly talented Pierro fillies are Tulip and this season’s ATC Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Satin Slipper.

Pierro retired to Coolmore in NSW in 2013 and last season stood at a fee of $49,500. He has rightly been given every opportunity to succeed with big numbers of quality mares visiting him each season, in his first five seasons covering 843 mates, 171 of them in 2017. At the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale this month 17 third crop yearlings by him have been catalogued with good sized drafts also headed to the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney in February and to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne in early March.

Pierata is the sixth foal and fourth winner for his dam November Flight (Flying Spur), winner of seven races, most important of which was the Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m). November Flight’s first foal, Ashokan (More Than Ready), won the Skyline Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and was Group One placed but failed to fully live up to his early promise. November Flight was returned to Pierro for her 2017 mating.

The writer bought as a yearling Pierata’s second dam November Song (Zabeel), a metropolitan winner, for long-time client Grahame Mapp who is now breeding from several of her daughters, her dam being by the influential speed sire Kaoru Star (Star Kingdom) and her second dam Century Miss (Century) remembered for her dramatic, last stride win in the 1979 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). November Song produced five winners from five foals to race, another being stakes placed Villa Splendido (Holy Roman Emperor).

Pierro’s VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Pinot is out of a top daughter of Zabeel (Sir Tristram) while Pierata has Zabeel as the sire of his second dam. As Pierro descends from Zabeel’s male line it means that two of his best winners to date are linebred to Zabeel, something for breeders to think about for the future.

Mapp’s planned mating which resulted in Pierata is worthy of study as it also features three crosses of Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native)

and four lines of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) but none closer than in the fifth generation. Famous mares Natalma (Native Dancer) and Special (Forli) also feature in Pierata’s pedigree background.

Before closing, tribute should be paid to the exceptional racing achievements of Pierro.

An almost flawless individual, Pierro virtually defied his stout female pedigree by becoming the unbeaten champion Australian two-year-old of the 2011/12 season, taking the ATC Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) at

his first start then going through to capture the autumn Triple Crown of the Golden Slipper Stakes, ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

He trained on at three years to defeat older horses at weight-for-age and was, quite simply, one of the best racehorses seen in Australia in the past two decades. With his priceless blend of speed and stamina Pierro may also prove to be one of the best sires in Australia over the next decade.
