Sports / Cultural Activities

VISTAS has vast and well laid out tracks. Excellent facilities are offered for all the indoor

and outdoor games. The students get excellent training from qualified Physical Director and

his team of assistants. The students are encouraged to participate in various inter collegiate

competitions to exhibit their talents and win medals and trophies. VELS Sports Academy

promotes sports and games. Fee concession and free education facilities are provided to the

Players who are selected to participate in games and sports at the Inter-university level. A

number of zonal level and all India level games are being sponsored by the University.

Believing in the co-existence of a sound body and a sound mind, VISTAS has a spacious play

ground with well laid out courts for Basket ball, Volley ball and Kabaddi. For the

convenience of students to practice various sports, the ground is divided into 2 parts. In

Ground – I facilities provided are suitable for Foot ball, 200 mts. Race, Track, Cricket Net

and Cricket pitch. In Ground – II Cricket pitch is at the centre of the field and facilities are

made for the students to practice Kabaddi Basket ball and Volley ball.

To promote sports and games and to motivate the students to develop sporting spirit, the

academy conducts inter-collegiate tournaments and Inter-school State level tournaments in

Volley ball, Kho-Kho and Cricket. Every year it organizes summer coaching camps in

Swimming and Cricket. Every year we host number of National and regional games meets

and our students have participated in National level games & athletic meets representing the

university, state and the nation. Shri. IshariVelan Memorial Rolling Trophy is awarded

during the state level inter collegiate tournament for Swimming, Basket ball and Volley ball –

Men and Women. A sum of Rs.2 lakhs is spent on this event every year. We have five Play

grounds, two Basketball courts, 3 Volleyball courts, 2 Shuttle Badminton courts, 2 fully

equipped Gymnasium, Indoor games such as table-tennis, caroms, chess and many more

facilities.

“Fitness leads to fineness”. Students regularly exercise and sweat out in the modern and well

equipped Gymnasium, built according to the specifications of national standards. The Multi-

Gym has 11 stations for various exercises.

University organizes a number of State level, inter-university level competitions to

promote Sports and Games among the students.

Inter-collegiate tournaments and Inter-university State level tournaments in Volley

ball, Kho-Kho and Cricket are also organized.

Every year, the university organizes summer coaching camps in Swimming and

National and State level sports meets have been hosted by the University in

Taekwondo and in Chess.

South Zone Inter-University Kabaddi Tournament (Men) on behalf of Association of

Indian Universities was hosted in 2014.

Vels Cup – an Annual event is oragnised by VISTAS and around 1500 students from

80 institutions participate in five events.

The Annual Sports is organized every year and the university championship is also

awarded to the student who secures maximum points.

A Sports and Games committee constituted by the University is taking care of organization,

promotion and execution of all sports and games activities along with maintenance of various

Track and Fields and purchase of sports materials.

VELS CUP 2014

The VELS CUP 2012 TOURNAMENT of our Vels University was held at the University

campus at Pallavaram for 2 days on 23rd & 24th March 2014. Dr.ISHARI.K.GANESH,

CHANCELLORVels University welcomed the participants and Prof.S.Ramachandran, Vice-

Chancellor, Vels University gave a special address, Mrs.MeenaMahalingam, International

Volley Ball Player,declared open the Inter-Institutional Tournament. Football, Basketball,

Volleyball, Kabaddi, Throwball and Taekwondo competitions. Around 1500 students from 82

institutions participated in the sports events.

Thiru.T.DEVARAJAN, International Boxer and Arjun Awardee, was the Chief Guest for

the Valedictory Function. He appreciated the winners and distributed the prizes. Vice-

President (Admn.,), the Registrar participated in the function and the Physical Director

Mr.A.Arangannal delivered the vote of thanks.

VELS CUP 2015

The VELS CUP 2013 TOURNAMENT of our Vels University was held at the University

campus at Pallavaram for 2 days on 8th& 9th February’2015. Prof.S.Ramachandran, Vice-

Chancellor,Vels University welcomed the participants and gave a special address,

Shri.P.GANESAN, Arjuna Awardee in Kabaddi, Asian Games Gold Medalist, declared

open the Inter-Institutional Tournament. Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Kabaddi, Throwball

and Taekwondo competitions. Around 1500 students from 81 institutions participated in the

sports events. The winners in the various games are given below:-

ACHIVEMENT OF THE STUDENTS

One of our Pharm.D Student, Mr.L.BhargavNarasimhan, has created a record by competing invarious categories of Rubik’s Cube solving, during the competition held in Amrita University on 2nd

January 2012. The previous record for 2 x 2 average category was 5.34 seconds and Bhargav’sAverage stood at 4.91 seconds. The previous record for 3 x 3 one handed single and average were22.17 and 24.73 seconds respectively, while Bhargav’s single and average for 3 x 3 one handed-singleand average were impressive within 20.51 seconds and 24.19 seconds respectively. All the 3previous records were created at IIT, Kanpur.

ANNUAL SPORTS MEET 2017

The Annual Sports Meet 2016 -17 of our Vels University was held at the University campus

at Pallavaram on 1st April’2017. Dr.IshariK.Ganesh, Chancellor, Preside over the function and

Dr.B.Krishnamurthy, Registrar, welcome the gathering. Thiru.A.MANIMARAN,I.R.S.,

Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Customs – Chennai (SEA) hosted the flag and declared

open the Sports Meet. He delivered the special address and distributed the prizes.
