Passion for light, solutions for life.

Change is written into our DNA. OSRAM develops intelligentand sustainable products to help conserve resources world-wide and to improve the quality of life through light. Artifi cial lighting is responsible for around 20 percent of worldwide power consumption. This means that highly energy-effi -cient lighting can save as much CO2 worldwide as can be absorbed by a forest twice the size of Italy. At present, more than 70 percent of our turnover comes from energy-saving lighting solutions.

LED technology is already a crucial factor here. LED-based products now account for around 25 percent of OSRAM’s total sales. OSRAM covers the entire LED value-added chain, from components to light management solutions. And with around 8000 LED patents, OSRAM has a considerable in-fl uence on the further development of LED technologies.

Sport is more than just a competition about top marks, goals and victories. If the vitality of the events on the field is transmitted to the spectators, then sports becomes a tangible experience, a real event.

For this to happen, even the fans in the cheap seats need to be able to follow the action without any problem. The wayathletes have their target in their sights, are taking a good look at their fellow competitors, or hit their target with millimeter precision. Professional athletes require professional lighting to be able to give their best performance. And referees need to be inthe position to make the right decision in fractions of a second.

Light is the decisive requisite here. Lighting solutions from OSRAM support athletes in managing their visual tasks, assisthigh-contrast vision and thus minimize the risk of injury. At the same time, they meet standardized requirements, evenfor HDTV transmissions.

All we do is light. And light is all we do.

In the large arenas, the lighting needs to meet the requirements of athletes, spectators,

referees and TV cameras.

“ A game lasts 90 minutes. With OSRAM it could last for more than 5,000 hours – no problem.”Jörg Meyer-Brenken · Business Development Manager, High Wattage HID

SOCCER

Hattrick: Light for athletes, spectators and referees

Soccer is the classic game under the open skies. It has very particular requirements regarding lighting. Particularly inthe large world championship stadiums and Olympic arenas,it needs to build a bridge: Between the requirements of the athletes and spectators on the one hand and theenvironmental protection and efficiency on the other.

Rotation symmetrical floodlights are the specialists when it is a matter of transporting light over great distances – whilesimultaneously avoiding light pollution and unwanted light scatter. On the ground the game, above the night sky. TV transmissions make even higher demands of good light:Illuminance, evenness, color reproduction. Televisioncameras need more of everything.

High performance sports for high performance floodlights.

RACING

Fast and hazardous – if thousands of

horsepower are in action on the race track,

then keeping the lighting even helps the

drivers not to lose their overview.

From 1 to 1000 horsepower: Light is safety

Regardless of whether one horsepower pulling a sulky, orup to 1000 hp on the Formula 1 circuit: Every type of racecircuit makes its own special demands of the lighting. Butit is primarily a matter of safety. Pilots need to be able toreact in a fraction of a second and must not lose theiroverview or control at any time. This is why it is importantto avoid glare and alternating between light and dark zones.

Speed and maneuvers are also very challenging for thehuman eye. To be able to correctly process what you haveseen in a very short time, the eye should be provided withcolors which are as natural as possible. This is provided byOSRAM lamps with excellent color reproduction properties.

It all depends on the tee shot. The standard compliant lighting of the driving

range provides optimal learning conditions and overview between the players.

GOLF

Tee shot without a handicap: Safety at the driving range

It all starts with the tee shot. The driving range is thepreferred practice ground for golfers. The lighting of thearea means it can also be used in the evenings and in thedark and also enhances the overview when several playersare all working hard on improving their handicap.

To do this, the player must be able to follow the flight ofhis golf ball as well as possible at any time of day and inall weathers, thus allowing him to optimize his swing. Largefloodlights provide sufficient brightness even over distancesof up to 150 meters.

Increasingly strong lighting is being used for the green. Itsupports the precision work being carried out by eye, handand brain when the player anticipates the path of the balland putts it in.

WINTER SPORTS

“ If athletes are taking great risks, then better to err on the side of caution with the light.“Dr. Stefan Jüngst · Product Manager, HPD

Safety on snow and ice:Even lighting for racing events

The days are short in the winter. It is practical if you canparticipate in sport in the evenings as well. Particularly asracing in the dark under floodlights has its own special appeal.

In racing events which go downhill quickly, high horizontallighting strengths are required for the athlete and highvertical lighting strengths for the TV cameras: in alpine skiraces and freestyle competitions. The same applies for the iced track: For bobsled, luge and skeleton. Measurementsare made with thousandth of a second precision, thesmallest pilot error is decisive. Dark areas compromise their ability to react and increase the risk of injury. Highperformance floodlights from OSRAM support good visibility, safety during sport and excitement among the spectators.

Page 13: Sports Facilities Application Brochure

In ski races and snowboard races, it is often a matter of a few hundredth or thousandth of a second.

High lighting strengths promote safety and improve the athletes' reaction times.

13

Page 14: Sports Facilities Application Brochure

Racing towards to goal at the speed of light:High lighting strengths for field hockey

If it is a matter of lighting, the requirements made by fieldhockey and soccer are basically comparable: It is important to avoid glare and dark shadows being cast on the playingfield. The difference: In hockey the ball is significantly smaller and considerably faster. It can reach up to nearly 150 kilometers per hour.

This is why very high horizontal illuminance is required in field hockey. To be able to assess the high speeds correctlyand to minimize danger of injury to players, it is also important for the lighting to be extremely even.

More safety thanks to light from OSRAM.

HOCKEY

High illuminance and evenness support your ability to

see and reduce the risk of injury to the hockey players.

“ In hockey the ball flies at around 150 kilometers per hour. The spectator would like to see it, the player needs to seeit. It is the job of the lighting to make this possible.”Jörg Eggers · Lighting Designer

TENNIS | BADMINTON | SQUASH

Tennis is precision work and demands utmost concentration from the players - sometimes for hours at a time.

As a general rule: The smaller and faster the object of play, the better the illuminance of the playing fi eld needs to be.

“ Along the path to victory are precision, reaction andspeed. Lighting from OSRAM provides you support inthe same way as your doubles partner.”Dirk Partum · Project Manager

16

Page 17: Sports Facilities Application Brochure

Game, set, light: Lighting for high visibility requirements

Regardless of whether it is tennis, squash or badminton – all three types of sport make the highest demands of the human eye: A small, very fast object of play which comes flying at the player in front of alternating backgrounds. The players need to anticipate the path of flight and react very quickly. And that with a ball, which in squash for example, reaches speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour!

The high illuminance provided by OSRAM floodlights support your eyes and help them identify contrast well. Level switches and daylight dependent system control increase the efficiency of the installation – lighting levels as you need them, like them, and which suit your budget.

SWIMMING

Clear view of the cool water: Swimming pool lightingwith minimal reflections

Not so much for the swimmer, more for spectators and referees: In contrast to other types of sport, the lighting ofswimming pools is primarily for the people who are not inthe water and who are watching the action in the water.

Not easy: Because when the competitors complete their lengths, eddies of water and splashes impair the view ofthe action. So the lighting needs to avoid additional reflections on the surface of the water.

Secondary reflector systems from Siteco provide the idealsolution for this. They direct the light evenly and preciselyon the surface of the water. Mirrortec® also makes it easierto install the lighting system. The projectors and installedoutside of the pool area, making maintenance easier.

High speed on blades:Light for quick reactions

High speed on blades – Ice hockey is one of the fastest teamsports there is. To master up to nearly 50 km/h on slipperyice, the players need to be athletic, sure-footed and agile. The puck moves over the ice at speeds which are even threetimes faster.

A challenge for the player, a challenge for the lighting. Sothat the players and spectators can follow the breathtakingspeed, the lighting at ice hockey needs to provide more thanjust illuminance. Evenness and good color reproductionsupport the players' reactions. Optimal territory for the LEDfloodlight. It meets these criteria and on top of that, worksat a whole new level of efficiency.

ICE HOCKEY

At ice hockey rinks, high illuminance is

required so that the players and

spectators are still able to see the puck.

BASKETBALL

Basketball: Bad light rebounds

The basketball court is the stage of giants. And this stage needs to stand out. This is why the playing area in basketball is designed to be much lighter that the spectator area. The sport becomes an event which is already evident by the way the players run in. Here, the sports lighting becomes event lighting - preferably it should be possible to flexibly dim and control the light.

With LED solutions such as the LED floodlight, control via DMX is possible with no problem. In addition to that, the prescribed standards are complied with. Sources of irritation such as glare, cast shadows and strong reflections are reduced.

High-end lighting technology for high class entertainment

HDTV

Thousands on location, millions watching on television. TV transmissions make significantly higher demands of lighting thanathletes and spectators, particularly if you are talking about HDTV.Illuminance, evenness, color reproduction – television cameras needmore of everything.

Sports associations such as UEFA and FIFA provide their own guidelinesto offer cameras the best possible recordings and the public at homethe best possible sporting experience.

One example: The fi nal of the European soccer championship. UEFA specifi es 2000 Lux here as the vertical illuminance in the direction ofthe permanently installed cameras. FIFA requires the same. Highperformance fl oodlights such as the SiCOMPACT® R3 MAXI from theOSRAM subsidiary Siteco effortlessly meet these requirements.

In the case of indoor sports, the LED fl oodlight SiCOMPACT® FL MIDI S from Siteco provides HDTV compatible and also highly effi cient light. Energy saving LED technology.HDTV compatible light for high speed recordings.Minimal maintenance effort. Sports lighting which complies with standards.

The LED floodlight is suited for vertical illuminance of 2000 Lux anddoes particularly well with super slow motion. For this purpose, therecording is made generally at 300 frames per second. Conventionallighting which pulses at 50 Hertz leads to a clearly visible flickering inthe recordings. Not the Siteco floodlight. During the practice test in thetelevision studio at PLAZAMEDIA, the high speed recordings remain freeof any flicker up to 1500 frames. Even with a power reduction by30 percent, the floodlight still provides suitable light for HD recordings.
