Five Yellowjackets head to state wrestlingEUREKA — For the five
Yellowjacket wrestlers making the long trip to Hays later this week, just getting there won’t be enough.
The mental preparation for this biggest meet of the season must be stepped up, as the Class 3-2-1A wrestling tournament was bumped up a day — to Thursday and Friday — because Fort Hays State University is also the venue for an NCAA II Collegiate Super Regional Tournament this coming weekend.
“I’ve talked a lot about not being satisfied with just making it to the tournament, but doing something with the opportunity,” said FHS head wrestling coach Brent Lane. “The kids will have to adjust their training schedule and weight management this week.”
Freshman Drake Shay is making his first trip to state to compete at 106 lb. Shay’s only regional loss this weekend at Eureka was a close match to an eventual runner-up wrestler form Marion.
“Drake had a nice tournament and also learned a little about his double leg,” Lane said. “He shoots really well but has to improve upon his finish. He’s also got to work on his stand-up and getting off bottom.”
In regional action, Shay pinned Gunnar Gassman of Garden Plain; lost 5-3 to Bertta Janson of Marion; defeated Gassman again, 6-1; then pinned Brady McBride of Frontenac to place third overall.
At 126 lb., senior Rylie Parker earned his ticket to the state tournament after losing twice to Caney Valley’s Guy Kinder and coming up the back side of the bracket to defeat Alex Cariman of Cherryvale, 10-2; and Zach Thornburg of Remington, 5-3.
“Rylie had a tough road through the back door and he rose to the occasion,” Lane said. “In the blood round (where a wrestler must win to move on), Rylie stepped up huge. He was down 1-0, hit a nice hi-c (his best shot), took the kid down and eventually turned him. This got him to the state tournament.”
The defending state champion at 132 lb., sophomore Brogan Humphrey pinned
two opponents, Casey Kolbeck of Wichita Independent and Gabe McAtee of Chaparral, and scored major decisions over John Rodriguez of Caney Valley, 9-1, and 10-2 over Kasey Biddle of Central-Burden. Humphrey was named the outstanding wrestler for the regional tournament.
Humphrey and Biddle had met before, including the championship finals of the Fredonia Invitational, and Biddle has chased Humphrey all season as the No. 2 wrestler in this weight class.
“Brogan had wrestled Kasey to two very close matches earlier,” Lane said. “On Saturday, Brogan took things to a new level, dominating the finals for a 10-2 major decision.
“There is a point in a match where one wrestler breaks the will or spirit of the other: Kasey shot on Brogan, who reacted and took Kasey to his back. That was the end of the effort for Kasey.”
Senior Zach Wiedmeyer took just one loss during the regional tournament, a 4-2 decision that he later avenged in the consolation finals, 1-0, to place third.
“Zach also had a tough path (at 145), coming through the back side with four straight wins,” Lane said.
Weidmeyer pinned Tyler Kuhn of Eureka to start the day, then dropped the match to Caney Valley’s Tyler Wood. Following the loss, Weidmeyer pinned Derek Huschka of Cherryvale, won 11-2 over Eli Igo of Remington and defeated Nic Johnson of Sedgwick, 5-3, before meeting Wood one more time – this time getting the 1-0 win.
Sophomore Luke Plummer dominated his first two matches at 182, pinning Zac Lewman of Marion and Logan Degnaoi of Douglass, before meeting Eureka’s Tyler Lowe.
“Tyler has beaten Luke three times this year,” Lane said. “Luke went out and was very aggressive, wrestled a nice match and took a chance against a better wrestler. He’s got the right attitude and I look for some good things this week at state, not only from Luke but from all of them.”
Junior wrestlers Braden
Sherman (152) and Anthony Gonzalez (285) both made it to the blood round, but came up short in their bids for a state berth.
“Brady battled a tough match,” Lane said. “He was down 2-0, came back and tied it up to send it to overtime, but was taken down just into the beginning of overtime. It was a very tough loss.
“Anthony was beaten by a Douglass wrestler whom he had defeated earlier in the year. Both of these juniors will be back next year. They had good seasons and I believe they will get even better, making it to the next state tournament.”
Sophomore Devin Howard (220) and freshman Gavin Burgess (113) lost out one round earlier than Gonzalez and Sherman.
Other Yellowjackets wrestling at regionals were Codi Martin (195), who went

Brogan Humphrey will defend his state title at 132-lb. later this week at Class 3-2-1A wres-tling, held at Fort Hays State University. Humphrey, along with Drake Shay, Rylie Parker, Zach Wiedmeyer and Luke Plummer, qualified for state championship competition at the regional meet held in Eureka. Lorrie Stewart/Citizen
