Maitland opening bowlers Ben Neaves (5-4) and Steve Abel (5-8) ripped through the visitors in the fourth round fixture of the Hunter Valley Cricket Council colts (under 21) competition. “It was an early day for us,” Maitland wicketkeeper Grant Stewart said. “Ben [Neaves] took five [wick- ets], Steve [Abel] took five and they [Muswellbrook] were all out for 15.” This capped off an impressive outing for Neaves, who top scored with 30 in Maitland’s innings of 130. Yesterday’s result keeps Maitland’s undefeated record intact for season 2011-2012 after record- ing victories against Newcastle City and Suburban, Singleton and Cessnock last year. Maitland’s final regular round match is scheduled for February 5 against Dungog at Dungog. The senior Maitland side resumes its John Bull Shield campaign on January 29 with a semi-final fixture. In other representative news, Maitland junior cricketers will be contesting representative carnivals across the state this week with vari- ous Central North and Hunter Valley squads. Giles Manley, Kynan Shalalo, Mitchell Fisher and Rigby Vane- Wood will represent Central North under 16s at the Bradman Cup in Shellharbour. Their NSW Country Cricket cam- paign gets under way today with a clash against North Coastal, while the final is scheduled for Thursday. Also this week, Lincoln Smith and Lachlan Wishart will represent Hunter Valley under 16s at the Stan Austin Carnival in Taree while Codie Little, Ryan Merrick and Saagar Pancholi will travel to Armidale for the Walter Taylor Shield with the Hunter Valley under 15s. This comes one week after 13 cricketers from the Maitland and District Junior Cricket Association represented various Hunter Valley squads at carnivals across the state. Nicholas Nield, Jacob Page, Clayton Small and Sam Wright were at Lismore (under-12s), Trent Page, Trent Park and Aaron Sherritt were at Ballina (under-13s), while Jamie Krake, Pat Magaan, Jordan Mitchell, Jayden Muddle, Callan Sargent and Brandon Smith were in Newcastle at the Graeme Malcolm Shield. Tori guides home a winner for her mum The mini trotters were out in full force on Inter City Pace night at Maitland Showground on Saturday but there was one special race on the card. It was the Ann-Marie Hancock Memorial. Anne-Marie was the secretary of the NSW Mini Trots Association but died last year after a battle with cancer. Driving in the inaugural race was Anne-Marie’s daughter Tori on board her trusty pony Little Romeo. Tori and Little Romeo were pipped on the post in the memorial race to finish sec- ond, with father Wayne on hand to present the trophies. But Tori and Little Romeo rallied later in the night to claim the final event on the card and SE is sure Anne-Marie would have been proud of the Hancock team. ❑❑❑❑ The Princess of the Paceway revival was a success at Saturday night’s Inter City Pace final and it was Nikki-Lee Osborn who claimed the prize after her barrier draw selection Lettucerocku won the feature event. ❑❑❑❑ And for astute readers of this weekly Monday sports column it has not under- gone a facelift for 2012 and will resume its usual life as Sideline Eye today, not Inside Eye as alluded to last week. ❑❑❑❑ Numbers Game: 3000 – the estimated crowd at Maitland Showground on Saturday night for the 49th running of the Inter City Pace final. ❑❑❑❑ Moment That Mattered: Louth Park driver Guy Chapple may not have got the one he wanted, the Inter City Pace, but he picked up a win in the last event at Maitland Showground on Saturday night. He drove Venus Ace to victory for East Maitland trainer Shane Tritton, much to the delight of Chapple’s cheering home crowd. ❑❑❑❑ Quote: “It is like a religious thing, people in Maitland go to church on Christmas Eve and to the Inter City Pace on the first Saturday in January,” Maitland Harness Racing Club president Richard Earnshaw said.
