Pool League Standings By Ken McDowell Sports Editor LOVELAND – Getting to the state tournament for the first time since 2008 was a huge step for the Peetz Bulldogs. Under first-year coach Jim Gardiner, the Bulldogs competed in the Class 1A State Tournament last weekend at the Budweiser Events Center, and even though they went 0-2, Gardiner feels the program took huge strides this year. Peetz (15-11), the eighth seed, opened the tournament Thursday against top-seeded and undefeated Sangre de Cristo and lost 63-27 after falling behind 24-5 at the end of the first quarter and 49-11 at halftime. In the consolation game Friday, Peetz came out and played much stronger against Ouray and lost 65-62 behind the 28-point performance by senior Casey Barrett. In that game Peetz had a chance to tie the game when Barrett’s half- court shot at the horn caught iron but not net. “I thought we played much better against Ouray than we did Sangre de Cristo,” Gardiner observed. “I would hate to say that we weren’t intimidated by the bright lights and the big stage, but we just didn’t show up in the first half. “We played a lot better defensively in the second half against them, and I think that carried over into the Ouray game the next day. Our kids played hard both days and that’s all I can ask from them. It was a good experience for them to get to that level and it was disappointing we didn’t win any games, but hopefully that’s something we can build on for the future.” As a player, Gardiner had experienced state tournament action. He was a member of the 1995 team that placed fourth in the Class 1A State Tournament and the Peetz 1996 squad that finished third. He admitted that being the head coach of the program for the first time this year was a learning experience. “I’ve been told that we have set the bar pretty high by getting to the state tournament this year,” he said. “I’m not a big X’s and O’s kind of guy, but more of a rah rah coach who tries to get the team fired up. “In the regional tournament when we beat Arickaree, we played our best game by putting together four quarters. Doing that more consistently is the biggest issue.” The Bulldogs will graduate 4 seniors who were on the post- season roster, including Barrett, Bradey Holtz, Brian Roelle and Garrett Roelle. “The Roelle twins didn’t go out for basketball last year, but we were able to talk them into coming out this year,” Gardiner said. “They played big roles on the team this year and helped us out quite a bit.” Holtz was the point guard and averaged nearly 10 PPG. Barrett led the entire state in scoring earlier in the season and finished with 501 points, averaging over 20 PPG. He finished with 89 3-pointers, including 8 in the final game against Ouray Friday. “Casey and Bradey will be tough to replace because they were our main shooters,” Gardiner said. “Casey had a remarkable year scoring, and both of them will be missed.” Juniors on the post-season roster this year were Jordan Nelson, Jordan Buss, Shawn Bernhardt and Garrin Cox; sophomores were Tyler Gentry, and Cody Wilson and freshmen were Logan Sircy and Alex Curlee. Sircy landed a starting role late in the season for the Bulldogs. “We do have a lot of young kids coming up through our program and from the eighth grade so we have an exciting future,” Gardiner said. followed by Simpson and Rinaldo with 12 each; sophomore Jau’nae Peevy 8; Cheney 6; Sheka 5; freshman Cierra Davis 4; Renata and Eidson 3 each and Washington and sophomore Shalamar Adkinson 2 apiece. Coffeyville had 2 players finish with 30 points each, including Devin Casper and Chanel Khammarath. NJC will graduate sophomores Blair, Cheney, Eidson, Peevy, Adkinson, Washington, Sheka, Rinaldo and Simpson. Peevy, Cheney, Blair, Sheka, Eidson and Adkinson were on last year’s team that posted a 14-15 record and came back to help lead the team to the National Tournament. Rinaldo, Washington and Simpson joined the team this year to help make the sophomore class even stronger. “Getting to the National Tournament was a big step for our program, and our sophomores showed great leadership,” Huss said. “They worked hard during the summer and bought into our system and I couldn’t have asked any more from them.” Freshmen for the Plainswomen this year were Estela Gutierrez, Renata, Davis and Denise Batiste.
