Sport and Recreation play an important part in college
life. In Waterford Institute of Technology a diverse range
of sports clubs and recreational activities are available
to all students regardless of ability or commitment.
The opportunity is there to join one or more of over
thirty clubs registered each year. The Institute has a
tremendous history in sport. The GAA Club is the best
known and most successful and while Camogie and
Football, Men’s and Ladies, are very strong, Hurling
is the major success story. Having won the Fitzgibbon
Cup for the fi rst time in 1992 the club has gone on to
win it on seven more occasions including 2008.
While GAA has been the major sport in the Institute,
since the clubs foundation over twenty-fi ve years ago,
a lot of work has gone into all of the Institute’s other
major sports such as Soccer, Rugby, Athletics and
Basketball over the past number of years. There is also
a lot of support for all of the other sports, and in some
cases these clubs have very strong membership bases
and represent the Institute in Intervarsity competitions
very successfully. Examples of such sports include
Kayaking, Swimming, Sailing and Badminton. There
are also a large number of Societies in the Institute
covering the three main areas Academic, Cultural
and Political. The largest and most active society
in the Institute is the Business Society followed by
the Engineering Society, there are also a number of
Cultural Societies such as the Chinese Society and
Irish Traditional Music Society. Most of the Country’s
Political Parties have a Society in the Institute.
All of the Sport and Recreational Clubs and Societies
in WIT are run through the Clubs and Societies Offi ce.
The clubs and societies offi ce plays a key role in the life
of the Institute, assisting students in the organisation
and running of these clubs and societies. If you need
help or advice on any particular activity please do not
hesitate to call into the offi ce to discuss it. We have a
full time co-ordinator to assist you with any help you
may need to organise your particular activity. Whatever
club or society you join, the enjoyment, friendship and
comraderie of being involved is an experience which
cannot be repeated and shouldn’t be missed, so get
involved in some of the sporting and social activities
of the Institute and see college life from a different
angle.
The environment of WIT strives to provide our students
with an opportunity to develop all of their talents in
an effort to produce well-rounded graduates that can
succeed in all walks of life. With a selection of clubs
catering for outdoor fi eld sports, indoor, water sports
and martial arts, there will be something to interest
everyone and at every level.

WIT has a number of on site facilities, which help cater for the extensive range of sports offered in the college, to
supplement these it has agreements with a number of local facility providers. Two of the major centres it uses are
the Waterford Crystal Sports Centre pool, sports hall and astro pitch, and the Waterford Regional Sports Centre.
The college is currently developing its own sports centre on its West Campus at Carriganore.
Sports Facilities Available
Page 21
WIT Sports CampusThe first phase of the WIT Sports
Campus project is now completed.
The 50-acre development close
to the Waterford city by-pass and
outer ring road will provide a central
and cohesive complex of sporting
and recreational facilities for teams
and individuals in the South East
Region.
Its location means that it is readily
accessible from both the City and
County and from the neighbouring
counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary
and Wexford. WIT Sports Campus
amenity is strategically placed on
the new bypass around Waterford
City and this will mean that the
site will be readily accessible to all
users.
This facility at Carriganore has
the potential to implement
three strategies; participation,
performance and excellence by
pursuing excellence in academic
programmes and research and by
providing inclusive facilities for the
wider community.
Third level Institutions have to be
pioneers in changing Irish society
for the better. WIT already has
been to the forefront in providing
personnel to help with the
development of sport in Ireland.
WIT has now advanced this trend by
providing sporting facilities that the
South-East can be proud of. These
facilities will be widely used by all
groups in the region and nationally.
WIT can now become leaders and
pioneers in sporting provision and
health promotion for the benefit
of the South-East region and to
ensure that the region and institute
maintains parity with other parts of
the country.
The two main strategies for the
future of Irish sport are; Participation
(to break down barriers and to
increase/maintain participation
throughout life) and Performance
(to create an environment that will
facilitate the development of the
individual’s sporting ability). By
providing a facility that is inclusive
and accessible to all within the
college and the community we
can deliver for the Institute, the
southeast and the nation on these
strategies. The uniqueness of this
facility will allow the Institute to be
a leader in the provision of sport
and recreation in the 21st century.
One of the main attractions will be
the full size GAA floodlit all-weather
pitch. The first in Ireland to pass the
new GAA Standard for GAA Pitches.
Waterford city has no all-weather
pitch of a size that would cater for
a GAA game and only two that are
standard size for Soccer. It would
serve the needs of WIT teams and
also a variety of local juvenile,
junior and senior teams.
Phase one is completed and includes:
l Three full sized floodlight grass pitches
l One top class GAA approved all weather pitch (full sized GAA or two soccer pitches)
l Cricket pitch
l 2 km undulating outdoor run
l 8 first class changing facilities
l Physiotherapy rooms
l Officials rooms
l Team meeting rooms
l Pavilion and viewing gallery.
The next phases will include:
l Large multi purpose Sports Hall
l Free weights room
l Machine weights room
l Cardiovascular room
l First Aid Facility
l Conference room(s)
l Offices
l Changing room
l Fixed orienteering course
l Water Sports Marina / Pontoon
l Studios
