son that included individ- ual county and MAC Red titles with a time of 16:41, good for 103rd place. Creagh was the first LCN runners since Justin Zanotti to claim a county title. He qualified for the finals by virtue of an 11th place finish at the regional meet Oct. 29. Milford High School claimed the boys team title in Saturday’s race, while MAC Red power- house Grosse Pointe South narrowly won its first-ever girls champi- onship. A common complaint that I often hear among hunters is that the state of Michigan has an agenda against hunting. Many people thought the bait ban, which was imple- mented for the Lower Peninsula in 2008, would end up being permanent. They thought it was just another way to stick it to hunters. Looking back many of those same people must be eating their words. As they stated then, the natu- ral resources commission made the decision to implement the temporary ban to make sure our state’s deer herd was not at risk of a CWD epidem- ic. Thankfully, testing has proven the herd is safe for now and true to their word, the NRC has lifted the bait ban. Personally, I think many of the decisions made recently that affect Michigan hunters have been in our best interest. The bait ban, and its sub- sequent removal, as well as the release of restric- tions on the use of cross- bows during the archery season come to mind. Many people also com- plained crossbows would make harvesting deer too easy and would result in too many deer being taken during the archery season. With the results of last year’s deer harvest released earlier this sum- mer that assumption couldn’t be less true. About 90,600 hunters used a crossbow during the 2010 archery season and harvested about 38,000 deer. That’s about a 36 percent success rate, well below the 44 percent success rate of all other hunters. Also currently being discussed is the antler point restrictions that have been implemented in certain areas of the state. The surveys returned to the DNR showed that statewide, the support for imple- menting antler point restrictions increased sig- nificantly from 2009 to 2010. My take on all of these changes is that this is a good time to be a hunter in Michigan. Not only can you use bait if you choose to but you can also use a wider range of weapons to harvest a deer. If the antler point restrictions are ever implemented more broadly throughout the state you’d also have a better chance to harvest a true trophy buck.
