son that included individ-ual county and MAC Redtitles with a time of 16:41,
good for 103rd place.Creagh was the first LCNrunners since JustinZanotti to claim a countytitle. He qualified for thefinals by virtue of an 11thplace finish at the regionalmeet Oct. 29.
Milford High Schoolclaimed the boys teamtitle in Saturday’s race, while MAC Red power-house Grosse PointeSouth narrowly won itsfirst-ever girls champi-onship.
A common complaintthat I often hear amonghunters is that the state ofMichigan has an agendaagainst hunting. Manypeople thought the baitban, which was imple-mented for the LowerPeninsula in 2008, wouldend up being permanent. They thought it was justanother way to stick it tohunters.
Looking back many ofthose same people mustbe eating their words. Asthey stated then, the natu-ral resources commissionmade the decision toimplement the temporary
ban to make sure ourstate’s deer herd was notat risk of a CWD epidem-ic. Thankfully, testing hasproven the herd is safe fornow and true to theirword, the NRC has liftedthe bait ban.
Personally, I think
many of the decisionsmade recently that affectMichigan hunters havebeen in our best interest. The bait ban, and its sub-sequent removal, as wellas the release of restric-tions on the use of cross-bows during the archery
season come to mind. Many people also com-
plained crossbows wouldmake harvesting deer tooeasy and would result intoo many deer beingtaken during the archeryseason. With the results oflast year’s deer harvestreleased earlier this sum-mer that assumptioncouldn’t be less true.
About 90,600 huntersused a crossbow duringthe 2010 archery seasonand harvested about38,000 deer. That’s about a36 percent success rate, well below the 44 percentsuccess rate of all otherhunters.
Also currently beingdiscussed is the antlerpoint restrictions thathave been implementedin certain areas of thestate. The surveysreturned to the DNRshowed that statewide, the support for imple-menting antler pointrestrictions increased sig-nificantly from 2009 to2010.
My take on all of these
changes is that this is agood time to be a hunterin Michigan. Not only canyou use bait if you chooseto but you can also use awider range of weapons toharvest a deer. If the
antler point restrictionsare ever implementedmore broadly throughoutthe state you’d also have abetter chance to harvest atrue trophy buck.

RUN
2012 season.
Depth landsLCN Blue title
The L’Anse CreuseNorth Crusaders alsowrapped up their seasonby claiming both theirdivision and dual meettitles in the MAC BlueDivision.
“I’m very happy withfact that we won the divi-sion meet. It was one ofour team’s goals,” coachMike Owensby said.
Although LCN willgraduate quite a fewswimmers from this year’steam, Owensby said he’ll
continue to build uponthe success of the last fewseasons despite the likeli-hood that the Crusaderswill be competing in theMAC White next year.Conference realignmentwill take place after theseason is complete and, although Owensby maynot like it, the Crusadersare pegged to move up adivision due to theirrecent success.
Regardless of whatdivision they compete in
next season the Crusaderswill again try to win as ateam.
“I’m extremely proudof my team. What theyhave done has been a totalteam effort,” he said.
