Sportsmen Yacht Club Newsletter January 2008 Well, it’s a new year already and, by the way, what have I done to myself? Just kidding. I am really looking forward to a great year. I, with the help of a lot of people, have some great ideas for the months to follow. We have some great cruise “outs” and “ins” planned along with a calendar full of events at the Club. This whole experience is very surreal to me because it has only been three years since I was introduced to the Sportsmen Yacht Club. Since then, I have met a ton of fantastic people all of whom have the same interests as my family and me. We are looking forward to the Installation Dinner, which is only in a few short weeks away. I think I have everything in line but I am “sure” that if I have forgotten something, someone will let me know. Oh well, I will just have to “wing it.” I would like to thank all of the people who have agreed to advertise in our monthly Newsletter. I am sure they will all realize a considerable return on their investment. I would also like to thank all of the new as well as the returning people who have said O.K. to another year of commitment to the several positions that make this Club “tick.” I would especially like to thank Pat Sebers and Steve Martinez for being my right hands next year. We’re going to have a lot of fun. Please feel free to come to me with any suggestions and improvements you would like to make at the Sportsmen. And last but not least, I want to thank Sherry Lively for a great 2007, and the wonderful job she did last year. I hope I can continue to keep this Club fun and successful. Have a Wonderful and Blessed New Year. God Bless America! Safe Boating Another year slips by as we look ahead - 2008 promises to be a good year. The New Years Eve party was a good way to start things off. I think this year we will hide the lampshades in order to tone things down. The Sunday after our December meeting, Dave MacDougall had a heart attack. I went to visit him at John Muir Hospital in Concord. Fortunately, there was not any heart muscle damage, however, there were 3 major and 3 minor arteries all but blocked. I guess that is called a sextuple bypass (or a thri-pass if you just count the major arteries). The day after surgery, the doctors had to reopen his chest to stop some bleeding. Dave and I came to the conclusion that the surgeon probably left his car keys in there… I waited a few days after his surgery before I called him because whenever we talk, there is a lot of laughing involved – it is very painful for him. I can tell it is painful by the way he curses at me as he is laughing. His scheduled date home was December 17th. Dave said that was pretty much a life changing event – anyone who wants to offer words of encouragement, feel free to call his cell at 925-437-1180. Another year slips by as we lookahead - 2008 promises to be a goodyear.

The New Years Eve party was a goodway to start things off. I think thisyear we will hide the lampshades inorder to tone things down.

No cruise outs are planned forJanuary, as we have our newOfficer Installation Dinner, SuperBowl festivities, etc. I would liketo do a ‘garage sale’ of ourexcess boating stuff in February, towards the end of the month.

As for our first official cruise out,I’ll be checking with the Rio Vistadocks to plan a March gatheringto include our RV contingencyfrom the club. With enoughpeople, we can use the party areaas well as the docks to enjoy ourcelebrations. If you’d like to doanother Scavenger hunt, let meknow – because otherwise, I’dlike to plan a Chili Cook-Off forthat cruise out. (or a rib cookoff?)

If any of you have ideas forspecial cruise destinations, pleaseemail me or the Commodore withyour ideas and we will certainlyentertain most any brilliant idea!In the meantime, please boatsafely and have a great 2008!

See you on the river,Jackie Oh!

A job well done to Commodore Sherry Lively andher 2007 crew. Congratulations to Casey Curry andhis 2008 Board and crew. One of the things Caseyand I discussed last month was changing thecaretaker’s days off from Tuesdays and Wednesdayto Saturdays and Sundays off. As of January 5th,the caretaker’s time off will be starting Friday at8pm and ending Sunday 8pm. I want to thankeveryone who volunteered for the Tuesdays andWednesdays caretaking last year. Casey and I arein hopes that this change will get some new folkscaretaking so the few who graciously handled 2007will have some relief.

We will be changing the batteries in the smokealarms at the January Work Party. Batteries will beavailable for any cabin holder who wishes to changetheir batteries themselves. The hall and top deckalarms will be serviced Saturday as well as anyremaining cabins. We will have batteries availableat our January meeting.

Roof patch will be available for Saturday’s WorkParty, so please earmark any leaks so we canattempt to repair them.

Commodore Curry has invitedme to be his Work PartyChairman this year and seeinghow the Club has such a greatmembership and a solid Flagand Board of Directors, I amactually excited about our Clubachieving some of Sportsmen’sgoals for next year. Some of themore pressing items are toaddress a few roof leaks, bothsides of the ferry, a newelectrical main, installation of anew dishwasher in the galley, and berth repairs. And, ofcourse, the grounds andbuilding maintenance are alwaysa constant necessity. Our Clubhas been blessed with so manytalented new members over thelast few years so that when wemake an effort, we really havethe resources to get much done.

Our next Work Party will be onSaturday, January 5th, and welike to start at 7AM (but trustme, we’ve never sent anyonehome if they’re late). We like to

start picking up about 1:00 andthen serve lunch at 1:30 whichmeans we’ve been at it forabout six hours. Then we gatheron the patio for a cool one.

The folks you usually want tocheck in with to see whatprojects are going on for theday are myself or the HarborCaptain (Lonnie Gibson), PortCaptain (Jim Dawson), GroundsKeeper (Al Alcorn), or any of theCommodores. Charlie Katusichdoesn’t hold any official title atthe Club this year, but you canusually find him running a jobsomewhere. Also, everybodywho brings their own tools isappreciated as the two rustedscrewdrivers and one brokenhammer at Sportsmen reallydon’t go very far.

I’d like to say that I’ve beenattending Work Parties here for25 years and in all that time I’venever once seen it whereeveryone was not deeplyappreciated for showing up. Sodrag your pretty mug down hereand lets “get er done”!!

See you on the patio afterlunch,Chuck

The Ferry fairly shook with all the goings onaround here Saturday afternoon and eveningon December 1st. I saw sno…tappingpenguins, waving Santa’s and even a few rednosed reindeer…there was even a campfire onthe pointy end of one of your boats…Hey! Itwas the Lighted Boat Parade! What fun! Therewere so many pretty boats…WOW! Cat curledup with me as I leaned back against the wheelhouse and we watched a great view of theshow below. There was a small boat with ahuge candy cane and a soldier guarding awaving American Flag!! Impressive! The VirginSurgeon and his Commodore wife won Best ofShow!!! THAT is really impressive because ofthe number of entries…They really had theboat looking great! The music and singing wasa key element and I must say you really puton a show.

The delightful Miss “O” hosted a largecontingent of “Sisters” and since she hastrouble in the wind with the boat she acquiredlast year, she hired the “husband part” of oneof our newer associates (she had the “wifepart” join the ladies) and he drove while theyall sang songs …the funny part is they keptreferring to themselves as “Sister Mary this”and “Sister Mary that”, including the Skipper’swife …(so I guess that makes him an EpiscopalPriest) as they kept referring to him as “FatherBob!!” Any way, one of the “Sisters” broughtan industrial size bottle of Vodkaaahhh andthey were all in their vespers by the end of theevening…all except “Father Bob” who they say,

THE GHOST OF

THE SAUSALITO

hid his face at the awards dinner. The delightfulMiss “O” couldn’t get a single word in, edgewise,…Yeppers…you didn’t hear me stutter… SHEcouldn’t get the “Sisters” to clam up longenough to tell them where to hang theircassocks, and when she did…they all startedlaughing again… honestly, some people justdon’t know how serious boating on the “SEA” is.Meeting night was a fun affair – The bunch ofyou was involved in lots of issues concerningthe goings on around here and how to bettersee them. I sure hope you can’t see ghosts withthe “special optics” available…One of the newmembers voted in was so excited he rang thebell twice…Then it was rung again …and again…the dice games went on, well into the night;some folks are slow learners…

Tool Man was out back drying his boat coversthe next day and Uf-Dah took some branchesout to the trash pile and I overheard Uf-Dahtelling some funny looking guy back at the ferrythat Tool Man came over to help him unload thebranches and said he couldn’t be happier to bevoted into the club…Good thing he wasn’t therefor your roasting! Such fun, this place!

So the next night, this ferry was rocking…notfrom a band, but a huge load of kids all deckedout in their best clothes and behavior— well…behaving as well as they could. For who wascoming as a special guest? The Jolly Old Elfhimself and an added bonus…Mrs. Claus…Theywere a very happy pair. The children all werescreaming when the lighted and then not lightedand then the lighted …seems that Bronco’s PCwifeypoo, put the heater plug into the inverterplug…anyway, once it was figured out …thelighted boat…carrying Santa was spotted andthe yelling didn’t stop until Santa and Mrs. Clauscleared the front door…The fun was quicklyunderway and the interviews were thorough andMiss Kathy and Miss Elaine got all the names

down, with the wishes for under the tree.Santa got spotted a coupla See-Gars fromone of the little tykes and Mrs. Claus a boxof some tempting goodies…The tyke nevermisses a beat …she knows who brings thegoods…and sees to it that they REMEMBERher! I am still laughing over that one.

Y’know something really nice happened thatnight…Next year Santa will have a newcadre of elves helping him…It seems that“Tinkerbelle” (Happy Holly) is leaving youfor a while…she is joining the ARMY!! She isgoing to nursing school and wants to be anurse. There are some very good peoplearound here and they do many good, unsung, things…I wish I wasn’t a ghostsometimes, so I could hug you guys nowand then.

Well the campfire got a good workout thisyear…last summer there were ghoststories…(I had to laugh at that one) andthen there were howling contests when themoon was full…then on the Parade night…there were musicians singing …morehowling at the non-existent moon…andfunny jokes told.

I think I am going to find a place where Ican hang out more often out there, as I amcertain there are good stories to be heard.

The New Commodore is the kinda guy whois gonna live up to the name “Casey”…nowthe tough part is going to match him upwith the character; “Casey at the Bat” ...or“Casey the Engineer”? There are nightswhen each could be employed …Come on,Kitty, let’s get some winks…things are goingto get interesting…
