Studying sociology of sport started in 1970’s.

WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?The pioneer: Auguste Comte (Francia)Objective: apply scientific method to social phenomenons. 1838 the term "sociology” was created.

Sociology investigates: StructureProcesses of human society Nature

Examples:Opinion polls.Habits of consumption.etc.

THE DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF SOCIOLOGY

FUNCTIONAL SOCIOLOGYSport allow the building of national and

personal identities.Allows one to channel agressiveness in a

positive way.

MARXIST SOCIOLOGYSport emerged during the Industrial

Revolution.Sport emanated capitalist views.

FIGURATIVE SOCIOLOGYStudy long term (evolution of human

behaviour).The more refined societies also have more

refined sporting structures. Sport is much more than simply practice.

Rather, it’s a key to the modernization of society.

STRUCTURALIST SOCIOLOGYGlobal overview of sports. Linking sport with the social structures.

Time & money spent practicing sport, freetime...

Social class influences sport preferences.Family and social relantionships have

influence.

INTERACCIONIST SOCIOLOGYDiference between :

Association: we can be members.Institution: we’re subject to their power.Organitzation: excutive control of behaviourial

conduct designed by the Institution. These 3 concepts have to be framed in every

case study.
