Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program

Congratulations to team Six Pack, our 2012 Coed Volleyball Summer League Champions! This is their 4th time as League Champions. Entering the playoffs with a season score of eight wins and no losses, Six Pack beat Spike-a-holics two out of three sets. Team Six Pack was lead by manager Victor Virgen. The team has participated in the La Puente League since the Fall of 2010. Six Pack is currently participating in the 2012 Fall League defending their title as League Champions.

Congratulations to Team Six Pack And Team SWAT

Congratulations to team SWAT, our 2012 Men’s Bas-ketball Summer League Champions! Entering the playoffs with a season score of six wins and two losses, SWAT beat The Assassinz 58 to 52. Team SWAT was lead by manager Jesus Zaldivar. The team has par-ticipated in the La Puente League since the summer of 2010. Team SWAT is cur-rently participating in the 2012 Fall League defending their title as League Cham-pions.

Each holiday season, the City of La Puente provides a free Christmas Tree Re-cycling Program where resi-dents can either place their trees curbside or take their holiday trees to La Puente Park at 501 N. Glendora Avenue for recycling. This year’s program will begin on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 and continue through Friday, January 11, 2013. For curbside pick-up, simply

place your tree next to your trash containers on your regular trash collection day. Trees over 6 ft. in height need to be cut in half.

Christmas trees must all be free of all decora-tions. This means removing all lights, tinsel, garland, plastic wrap, tree stands, wire, rope, nails, and all other foreign materials from trees before recycling them. Sorry, flocked trees will not

be collected curbside or ac-cepted at La Puente Park.

Recycling your tree saves valuable landfill space! Trees are grounded into mulch, compost, or alternative daily landfill cover which reduces soil erosion and deters weed growth.

While the program is free of charge, individuals drop-ping off their holiday trees must be a City of La Puente resident to participate. For

further information, please call La Puente City Hall at (626) 855-1500 or call Valley Vista Services at (800) 442-6454.

This is a friendly reminder that dog and cat licensing is required for dogs and cats within the City of La Puente. California law requires that all dogs over the age of four months be licensed as a rabies control measure. According to an analysis conducted of prior year’s animal service statistics, cats are the greatest animal group serviced in La Puente. Having your cat licensed will

Vaccinate StopGerms

Antiviral Drugs

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccineas the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.

While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common.

Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as this season’s vaccines are available.

Vaccination of high risk persons is especially important to decrease their risk of severe flu illness.

People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.

Vaccination also is important for health care workers, and other people who live with or care for high risk people to keep from spreading flu to high risk people.

Children younger than 6 months are at high risk of serious flu illness, but are too young to be vaccinated. People who care for them should be vaccinated instead.

If you get the flu, antiviral drugs can treat your illness.

Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics. They are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) and are not available over-the-counter.

Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They can also prevent serious flu complications, like pneumonia.

It’s very important that antiviral drugs be used early to treat people who are very sick with the flu (for example, people who are in the hospital) and people who are sick with the flu and have a greater chance of getting serious flu complications, either because of their age or because they have a high risk medical condition. Other people also may be treated with antiviral drugs by their doctor this season. Most otherwise-healthy people who get the flu, however, do not need to be treated with antiviral drugs.

Flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people also may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/fluor call 800-CDC-INFO

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

Winter 2012

Herbs: Many herbs make attractive plants and they taste so much better when freshly picked from your garden or kitchen window. They are easy to grow and certain herbs are very fragrant such as mint, rosemary, basil, thyme and oregano. Plant them and enjoy!

JanuaryBare root Planting: Deciduous fruit and shade trees, ber-

ries and roses. If you are unable to plant immediately, place bare roots into damp soil, sawdust, wood shavings or sand and keep moist. Soak roots in water before planting.

Soil preparation: Prepare for bare root planting by digging holes and adding compost.

Grapes: Start more grapes from cuttings. Cut 12 inch stems with at least one bud node near the top. Bury all but the top 2 inches in good garden soil and keep moist.

Prune: Now is the time for the heaviest pruning. All decidu-ous fruit trees, berries and grapes. Cut impatiens back, remov-ing all lanky stems. Don’t prune spring flowering shrubs and vines until they are through flowering. Prune rose bushes now, but do not prune climbing roses until after spring flowering.

Plant: Amaryllis bulbs in a sunny or semi-shaded area, in loose soil with good drainage. Plant with the tip of the bulb just showing.

Buy: Summer bulbs such as tuberous begonias, cannas, dahlias, lilies and gladiolus.

Feed: Citrus trees need slow release ammonium sulfate then deeply water. Feed staghorn ferns with bone meal or a high nitrogen liquid fertilizer.

Water: For fruit trees, roses and lawns, reduce the amount of water because too much water can damage roots.

February Pest Control: Spray deciduous plants with horticultural oil

now to smother mites, scale and other insects. To prevent fungal disease in deciduous fruit trees, add lime sulfur or fixed copper to the oil following package directions. For apricot trees, use only fixed copper. For peach trees, add lime sulfur to the oil.

Prune: Wisteria should be pruned before spring growth. Prune deciduous fruit and ornamental trees, grapes, vines, and roses. If you have a plumeria tree, now is the time to shape or thin the branches. You can start new plumeria plants from the cuttings for yourself or to give to friends.

Fertilize: Wait until the leaves on the roses turn from red to green, and then give them the first feeding of the year. Feed established roses using a balanced plant food high in phosphorus. Feed camellias and other flowering plants with a plant food which contains nitrogen, potassium and phospho-rus. Apply a complete fertilizer to deciduous fruit trees two to three weeks before trees begin to bloom. Feed ground cover and other permanent plants with a slow release fertilizer such as bone meal.

Lawn Weed Control: Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent crabgrass and other annual weed seeds from ger-minating.

Plant: Set out seedlings of peas, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, celery, lettuce, carrots, cabbage, onions, turnips and parsley. Tomatoes and peppers can be planted after the middle of the month. Gladioli corms can be planted now. Finish planting bare root roses, fruit trees, grapes and berries.

March Divide Perennials: If perennials are crowded and last year’s

blooms were sparse, it is time to divide them. Dig each clump so root ball comes up, shake off excess dirt, and divide. Each plant should have some leaves and plenty of roots, then plant immediately.

Pruning: Prune camellias and azaleas after blooming. If part of your plants have frozen areas, do not prune until mid-spring and then cut off only the damaged area. If you prune damaged plants now, there might be further frost damage. Also prune hibiscus and other evergreen plants.

Pest Control: Spray for aphids and start crab grass control and watch for snails. Protect fruit trees from brown rot fungus by spraying chlorotlhalonil fungicide and remove any “mum-mies” or remains of fruit that can harbor spores. Prevent wormy apples and codling moth larvae by spraying with carbaryl or malathion every ten days for the next six weeks.

Fertilize: Feed roses, avocados, citrus trees and lawns. Before feeding roses, wait until their leaves turn from red to green. Avocados require two feedings of nitrogen fertilizer per year. First feeding should be in March. Citrus trees require nitrogen fertilizer in mid March. Apply a quarter cup of Epsom salts to mature roses, citrus, avocado and other fruit trees to increase their yield of flowers and fruit.

Plant: cilantro, corn, squash, melons, tomatoes, peppers and green beans, impatiens, sunflowers, petunias, verbena zinnias bearded iris, lamb’s ears, daisy, geraniums, agapan-thus, citrus and avocado.

Watering: All plants, but especially container plants, are vulnerable to dry March winds and can dehydrate. For con-tainer plants, add more potting soil around the inside edges of containers and water more frequently so that plants will not dry out and die.

Wash your hands often. This will help protect you and others against germs. When soap and water are

not available, use alcohol-based disposable hand wash or gel sanitizers.

When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.

If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve, not your hands.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

If you are sick, stay home and away from other people as much as possible, to

protect them from getting sick as well; get plenty of rest and check with your doctor.

Get an annual fl u shot.

The City of La Puente held its 21st Annual Main Street Halloween Run on Sunday, October 21, 2012. More than 4,000 people participated in this year’s event. The course started and ended at La Puente City Hall, located at 15900 East Main Street. A cash prize of $150 was awarded to the fastest male and female in each of the 5K and 10K runs. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded to the top three male and top three female finishers in each of the age categories for the 5K and 10K races. There was also a 5K walk and a Youth Fun Run for children 7 years and under. For a complete list of results, please visit Racewire’s website at http://racewire.com/live_results.php?id=2604. Every participant who completed the course received a special recognition medal. The City of La Puente received both monetary and in-kind donations from Northgate Market, Valley Vista Services, Southland Transit, Willdan Engineering, Haddick’s Towing and Auto Body, Speed Zone, U-Haul, Sparkletts, Foothill Transit, 7 Eleven, Farmers Insurance Group, Ed Chavez and the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, Casa Blanca Mexican Restaurant, Kiwanis Club of La Puente/Industry, Scardino’s Pizza, and Wok Express.

Disaster can happen any-time, anywhere. After a disaster, local officials and relief workers will be on the scene, but they cannot reach everyone immedi-ately. You could get help in hours, or it may take days. Be prepared to make it on your own for at least three days.

Think first about fresh water, food and clean air.

Consider making two kits. In one, put everything you will need to stay where you are and make it on your own. The other should be a lightweight smaller version you can take with you in a backpack or duffle bag if you have to get away.

The following are basic disaster supplies:

• Water and food sup-plies

• Change of clothes, sturdy shoes

• Blankets or sleeping bags

• First aid kit and pre-scription medications

• Extra pair of glass-es

• Battery-powered ra-dio, flashlight, and extra batteries

• Credit cards and cash

• Plastic sheeting, duct tape

• Portable can opener, utility knife

• Personal hygiene supplies and soap

• Garbage bags• Non-prescr ipt ion

drugs• Sewing kit• Fire extinguisher,

flares• Shut-off wrench, to

• Whistles, compass• En te r ta inmen t -

When winter tempera-tures drop significantly be-low normal, staying warm and safe can become a chal-lenge. Whenever tempera-tures drop decidedly below normal and as wind speed increases, heat can leave your body more rapidly. Ex-tremely cold temperatures often accompany a winter storm, so you may have to cope with power failures and icy roads. Cold related issues can occur inside your home as well. When people use space heaters

Winter Weather Advisory Tipsand fireplaces to stay warm, the risk of household fires increases, as well as the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Prepare for cold weather. Below are tips that you can take in advance for greater winter weather safety in your home.

Use only safe sources of alternative heat such as a fireplace or portable space heaters with automatic shut-off switch. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Have your heating system

checked by a professional annually. This will ensure that your system is working safely and efficiently which, in turn, will save you money. If you heat by wood, clean your fireplace. Have your chimney flue checked for any buildup of creosote and then cleaned to lessen the risk of fire.

Move family pets indoors or provide adequate shelter to keep them warm. Pets can get frostbite very eas-ily on the ears, tail, and paws.

When driving, plan your stops and keep more dis-tance between cars. Be extra alert. Always match your speed to the road and weather conditions.

Many layers of thin cloth-ing are warmer than a single layer of thick clothing. One of the best ways to stay warm is to wear a hat; most body heat is lost through the top of the head.

Make sure your home is properly insulated. If nec-essary, insulate walls and attic. This will help you to

conserve energy and reduce your home’s power demands for heat.

Replace batteries of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors. If you did not do it when you set the clocks back, do it now.

Establish a well-planned escape route with the entire family.
