I.T. BlogBrowsing the Internet
Happy New Year! Hopefully yourcomputers have functioned stoicallyover the holiday period and yoursystems have been running troublefree. In all likelihood that old PC isrunning a bit slower than it shouldand all of the information flyingaround about what you should &shouldn’t do on the Internet isleaving you, at best, confused!Hopefully we can use our monthlyblog to help you get over that &dispel some of the popular mythssurrounding your PC & the internet. On occasion it might even beentertaining! For January we are focusing on WebBrowsers and which ones youshould or shouldn’t use. Most peoplewill immediately think of one of 3browsers if you start talking aboutthe Internet - Internet Explorer,Firefox or Chrome, with Safari andOpera occasionally getting a look-in.Now there are alternatives but wedon’t come across them often, so Iwon’t mention them. Essentially, anyof these browsers are absolutely fine& from a security perspective thereis very little to choose between them, and we have stats to back that up.One thing you must remember to dois keep the browser up-to-date withthe latest patches & also to updateany plug-ins that you have e.g. Java,Flashplayer, Shockwave. As long asyou do this, then use whichever ofthese browsers you like the best, even if it’s just because it lookspretty! Check out our website for alot more information.

Why 11th January? This is the date of the Burning ofthe Clavie, a fire festival unique to Burghead, whichgreets the New Year, first recorded in records of the Pres-bytery of Elgin 1655. Banned by the Church in the 17th-18th centuries as idolatrous, the earlier history behindthis fire festival is unrecorded. Such ceremonies mayhave pagan origins, and at Burghead could date back tothe pre-Christian Pictish occupation.
The significance of the 11th January dates back tothe 1750’s, when the Julian calendar was reformed inBritain and the new Gregorian calendar was introduced.People rioted demanding back their 11 days but not inBurghead. Brochers decided to have the best of bothworlds, by celebrating New Year twice on 1st Januaryand 11th January.
Now every 11th January the flaming Clavie (a barrelfull of staves) is carried round the town by the ClavieCrew followed by a large crowd. Certain favouredresidents along the route have a lucky burning emberdelivered to their door. The final destination of the Clavieis the Doorie Hill on the ramparts of the ancient fort, where it is firmly wedged. After refueling several times,it is allowed to burn out and fall down the hill, when stillsmoldering embers are eagerly gathered.
Possession of a piece of the Clavie is said to bringgood luck for the coming year and pieces are sent roundthe world to exiled ‘Brochers’.
The Burning of the Clavie dates much further back
than the 1750’s, of course. Before the coming of Christi-anity, the priests of the day were the Druids, the men ofwisdom and learning. The common people held them in
superstitious reverence. Many were the strange ritesperformed at their hands, many the sacrifices theydemanded. Their chief instrument of ceremonial was fire.It was the great purifier.
Shaw, the 18th century historian of the Province ofMoray recounts a Druid rite, which was enacted when adisease broke out amongst the cattle. The fires in thehouses around were extinguished. Sparks were ‘forced’by rubbing pieces of wood together, and from these, bunches of juniper were lit, to be burned in the stalls ofthe cattle. The smoldering branches were carried in abasket (Gaelic word ‘cliabh’ pronounced cleeav) amongthe cattle in order to combat infection. When this hadbeen done, the flaming juniper was carried round thehouses in the vicinity, to rekindle the fires on theirhearths.
From such a custom is surely derived the Burning ofthe Clavie. On that anniversary night of pagan ceremo-nial, Burghead reverts to the mood of primitive times, re-enacting some form of fire worship many centuries havenot forgotten.

How good were you over Christmas? At this time of year this questionalmost certainly refers to our eatinghabits over the festive period! Ouranswers will depend on howmuch wedid or didn’t restrain ourselves. Thatis, restrain ourselves when faced withthe temptation to gorge ourselvesupon tasty morsels and treats. Let’sface it, the pressure is so great. Allthose special dainties dressed up inalluring packaging enforced by at-tractive advertising - how can any ofus resist!
Chocolate, nuts, exotic snacks, roasts, let alone the puddings! Whatis worse, we don’t even hide suchthings away in the kitchen cupboards.No. Aren’t they often right under ournose? Often only at arms reach in abowl or out on a table ready to begrasped as our eyes are glued to thetelly! So, no doubt we will all behearing the “I wasn’t very good thisChristmas” followed by “I really oughtto lose some weight!”
More seriously, for many, thebeginning of a new year brings with it
the ‘seasonal blues’. Often Christmasand New Year celebrations function asa bit of an anaesthetic against thereality of life. As we face the earlybleak months of the year our lives canseem equally bleak in the aftermath ofthe holiday season. For some, takingdown the decorations provokes asense of gloom, let alone the firstcredit card payment demand!
I haven’t yet mentioned whatChristmas is all about from a Christianpoint of view. It is a sign of the timeswhen we could have an extendedconversation about Christmas withoutany mention of what it is all about.
Traditionally, Christmas is a season torenew hope for the New Year. Itreminds us of God’s most generousand costly gift to us; His beloved Sonwho came to die and save us from oursins. In contrast, culturally, Christmasis more about the gifts we give andreceive, encouraged on by the greatwheels of the retail economy. I don’tsuppose, however, that the notion ofneeding to be saved from our sins issomething that the majority think of at
Christmas. In fact, I expect that thewhole idea of the need of Salvation isfoolish to some and offensive toothers.
I’m sure many would agree that thereare consequences to our conductover the festive period - a debt to paywhether physically, emotional and/orfinancial. Likewise, there are spiritualconsequences to our conductthrough our lives before God. TheBible declares that “…all have sinnedand fall short of the glory of God”(Romans 3:23). The good news is thatGod’s ‘Christmas gift’ in Jesus paysoff the debt our sins accrue; apayment we are helpless to attainourselves, no matter how good wethink we are.
This gift is only received and kept byfaith alone. Yet this is one gift thatmany ignore and, so to speak, neverunwrap, never appreciate. So, howabout you?

Don’t PanicHelp is at hand
So it’s back to normality after the Christmas and NewYear celebrations! How are you feeling now that thefestive hype has passed? For some people it’s awelcome return to the usual routine of life. Maybe that’syour experience; you’re quite glad to take down thecards, pack away the decorations and put them in theloft until next year. However for others, if Christmas andNew Year is a real time of joy and happiness, it can bea struggle to say goodbye to the holiday period andhello to the regular pattern of life again.
Maybe some of you are struggling to get back into thenormal routine because you know that you have to faceup to your difficult financial position. Perhaps in the lastyear you’ve lost your job or have struggled to cover yourregular outgoings. The Christmas break has maybetaken the focus temporarily away from your problems.
But as January comes and normality resumes again, thereality of your situation remains the same. For a lot ofpeople, the Christmas spending begins to bite as thebank statements or credit card bills come tumblingthrough your letterbox. You might even have taken outan extra loan to cover the cost of the festive season, po-tentially adding to existing debts. And so a tight financialposition becomes even tougher. If this is you & you’rereally struggling to meet the costs of everyday life orhave debt which is spiralling out of control then whatcan you do? Firstly, don’t think you are alone! One effectof being in debt is that you can feel very isolated. However, a recent survey by Credit Action found thatduring December Citizens Advice dealt with 9,389 newdebt problems every working day.
Secondly, be assured that there is help at hand! Thereare a range of services available to help those strugglingto make ends meet or repay personal debt. It is oftenhard to take that first step and admit your need of help. But as hard as it is, this step is crucial to begin gettingyour finances back on the right track. One suchresource is CAP. This initiative has come about throughlocal churches partnering with award winning charityChristians Against Poverty (CAP) to offer a comprehen-sive solution to those struggling in debt. Through a com-bination of budgeting advice, creditor liaison andpersonal support, CAP can empower people to workthemselves out of debt and transform their finances. Youmight ask, why would churches want to get involved inhelping people in the whole area of finance? Simplybecause we believe that God cares for everyone andthat each aspect of our lives is important to him. Acommon description of God is found in Psalm 86: Butyou, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slowto anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. So this loveis reflected by providing a very practical resource tothose struggling with debt. CAP’s services are com-pletely free of charge and are available to everyone re-gardless of your belief or background.
So hopefully, whatever your situation is as we beginthis New Year, you will be able to look ahead to thecoming year with confidence. For those facing financialissues, may you know that help is at hand, and throughresources such as CAP that you need not feel alone orisolated. Instead be assured that there are people whocare about your situation. Above all, be encouraged thatthe Lord is indeed a compassionate and gracious Godwho cares deeply for you.

Public Session• Janet Kennedy, a prospectivecandidate in the forthcoming by-election for a position in the MorayCouncil, took the opportunity to addressthe Community Council. She said thatshe had decided to stand, as an inde-pendent candidate, as she was awarethat Forres residents were becoming in-creasingly unhappy thatMoray Council were failing to takeaccount of their views. She, like manyothers, was set back by the recentshocking news which would have graveeffects on the area. She told membersthat they could contact her on her website www.janetkennedy.org.uk wherepeoples concerns would be takenforward if she was elected.• Also wishing to address the meetingwas Aaron McLean, the prospectiveSNP candidate. who was raised, educated and lives in Forres. He saidthat he would listen to the local com-munities and intended to act in the bestinterests of the local people, if elected,to help improve our corner of Moray. Hewould encourage new initiatives intothe town.Secretary’s Report• Letters from Moray Council, NHS andGrant & Geoghegan were received.• The Moray Council Legal Serviceshave written to dispute common goodstatus to Auchernack on the groundsthat the use of it by the former towncouncil as a residential home for astatutory duty removed common gooddedication.• The Chief Executives Office notifiedus of the Moray Council Budget Con-sultation for 2011/12 and invited us to
attend a meeting to contribute ourviews. Members had noted that one ofthe propositions suggested that thecommon good car parks in the town beturned into pay parking. Cllr Mackenziesaid that the land had been bought byProvost Forbes & the Town Council, from both businesses and privateowners alike with the intention ofproviding free parking for the townsfolk. As that land had been purchased by theCouncil with Council funds it becamecommon good on the dissolution of theTown Council under common good law.• Educational Services notified us oftheir intention to create, as part of theCommonwealth Games Legacy plan,Community Sports Hubs in Moray. Afollow up meeting is planned forearly/mid November.• NHS Grampian are holding a consul-tation on Draft Strategy for MaternityServices 2010 - 2015 and would likeresponses by 22nd November.• Grant & Geoghegan have invited theCommunity Council members to attenda drop in exhibition in the CommunityCentre on 14th October to display theirhousing plans for site R3 Ferrylea,Grantown Road, Forres. Like many of my con-stituents my work meansthat I am away from homefor several days at a time, making the balance ofwork and family quite a
challenge. One interesting side effect thatbecame apparent recently is that the time athome has become a crash course (with myson as teacher) in the workings of WWEwrestling, which my eldest son became anexpert in after only a week of watching! His new fascination did remind of the daysof rivalry between Big Daddy (the hero) andGiant Haystacks (the villain) I used to watchon the TV at weekends - a far cry from thetanned body builders that are the wrestlingstars of today.
In recent weeks it has, un-surprisingly, been non-stop campaigning, questioning and challeng-ing on the impact of theDefence Review on
Moray. In some lighter moments I have, however, got along to see some of our localfootball teams in action.A particular note of congratulations to bothElgin City and Buckie Thistle who haveboth progressed to the fourth round of theScottish Cup, with Buckie travelling toThird Division Team East Stirling and Elginoff to play old rivals Inverness CaledonianThistle. It will certainly be an interestingNew Year for these two Moray teams. Goodluck to both of them in their games.

Apple and Pear Crumble withFresh Egg Custard
As I predicted the long winter has certainly startedearly, the snow has come upon us with her friend cold, cold nights, so to counter these long nights I think wehave come to one of the most loved winter desserts -Crumble. There are many varieties and a combinationof this classic but this is the one we serve at Knockomieand is very simple and tasty.
The basic crumble mix is half fat to flour and thesame amount of sugar as fat (or a little more if you wantit sweeter). So in general to make enough of thecrumble mixture if you want a deeper crumble toppingyou can just half it again
FFoorr tthhee ccrruummbbllee
100g/4oz Flour
50g/2oz Butter or Margarine
Zest of Lemon, Orange and Lime
50 g/2oz Medium Oatmeal (Optional)
50g/2oz Sugar
Rub the butter into the flour until they cometogether and are of a Sand texture, add the zest,Oatmeal if adding and sugar.

Continued from page 20• He told the meeting that he had received a 12 monthreview from the Citizens Advice Bureau for the last year.• Scottish Water had invited him to attend a public meetingin Inverness on the 16th of November.• The Chair read a brief statement by the CommunityCouncil. “The recent news about the Nimrod Force and RAFKinloss is as unexpected as it is devastating. The cancella-tion of the Nimrod fleet is not only a deep blow for the localarea but it is a body blow to the National Security. Who betterto understand thisthan the People of the Forres area. Our thoughts go out notonly to the local people affected but also to all those airmenand their families at Kinloss whose lives are now to be turnedtotally upside down. These are the short term difficulties tobe dealt with and the long term problems are yet to surfaceie. in the job market, business and the housing market. Thefuture of Forres is now even more in the hands of the peopleof Forres”.External Groups Report• Cllr Mackenzie told the meeting that the Heritage Grouphad failed to obtain funding through Moray Council officerReni Milburn.• Youth Rep Ross Kennedy thanked the Community Council,on behalf of the Pupils Forum for their visit.• Cllr Maclean said that he had had no satisfactory response, despite repeated requests, from Councillor Bell to hiscomplaint that it was against planning law, SPP11 that aplaying field at Thornhill could be used by the NHS withoutSport Scotland being consulted. The same situation existsregarding Bogton Park, Sports Scotland has not been
consulted despite it meeting all the criteria of a playing field. He said it also contravened the Local Plan to consider thesale of Bogton, removing a green space from the plan. Thisinformation has now been forwarded to Councillor Ogilvie tofollow up.• Councillor Bell was also due to provide further informationregarding the Flash Flooding issue. Again this informationhas been passed to Councillor Ogilvie.• Cllr McDowell reported to the meeting that the Soccer7’s/Bowls pavilion had been returned to Moray Council forrepairs to be carried out under guarantee.• Moray Cllr Ogilvie told us that our observations on theGypsy/Traveller site would come before the CommunitiesCommittee on the 7th of December.Treasurer’s Report• The Treasurer informed the meeting that our account stoodat £477.03 Following the decision at the Sept P & R meetingin relation to Community Council funding he asked membersif they had any outstanding claims against the account priorto it being audited.
