ISTANBUL STRAIT ROAD TUBE CROSSING PROJECT
YMSK JV
PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
05 FEBRUARY 2015

AGENDA
• Employer’s Requirements
• Proposed Products for Fire Protection
3
Employer’s Requirements
As per Chapter 4, Clause 4.1.6.2/3:
Fireproofing material is to be installed in the shield TBM tunnel section. Segments which are exposed to the
road space, but at least the crown and upper half of the side walls of each tunnel section, will be installed
with this material.
TBM Tunnel Asia Cut&Cover Tunnels ATB and ETB Cut&Cover Tunnels
4
Employer’s Requirements
• PIARC Fire and Smoke Control in Road Tunnels
The EUREKA tests confirmed the
maximum temperatures at the tunnel
ceiling and side walls:
• for the passenger cars up to 500°C
• for a bus 800°C
• for HGV up to 1000°C
• NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways
5
Employer’s Requirements
As per Chapter 4, Clause 4.3.8/2:
A design fire time of 60 minutes fire exposure with max temperature of 1200°C and 110 minutes cooling
phase shall be assumed.
In respect of this requirement:
RABT fire curve fits for the intended
purpose; in the RABT fire curve the
temperature rises up to 1200°C within
5 minutes, the duration of the 1200°C
exposure is 60 minutes, and the cooling
period is 110 minutes.

Employer’s Requirements
Chapter 4, Clause 4.3.8/4:
The following performance required to primary structural members protected by fire protection and
exposed to fire:
1. Explosion of concrete is not permitted,
2. The temperature in any reinforcement and structural steel shall not exceed 350°C,
3. The fireproofing material shall not fall from the crown or side walls during fire exposure or the cooling
phase. Safety factor of the segment after cooling phase shall be more than 1.1 (SF>1.1).
7
Employer’s Requirements
1. Concrete structural elements shall be protected such that explosive spalling is prevented.
2. The temperature of the concrete surface does not exceed 380°C.
3. The temperature of the steel reinforcement within the concrete does not exceed 250°C.
4. Steel or cast iron tunnel linings shall be protected such that the lining temperature shall not exceed 300°C.

Board/Panel Type Products: Promatect-H
General Information: PROMATECT®-H is a non-combustible matrix
engineered mineral board reinforced with selected fibres and
fillers.

• Standard Shape/Dimensions: Flat, 1200 x 2500 mm.
• Promatect-H boards can be curved at site depending on the diameter of
the tunnel. Quality Control is important to prevent damages during
shaping.
• Boards can be directly fixed to the concrete soffit if the tunnel surface is
even. Steel framing members should be used for uneven surfaces.
• TBM inner surface is not even surface due to segment installation
tolerances (offsets between the segments will occur). This requires frame
installation behind the board system.
• If steel frame is to be used, durability and performance of the steel
components under fire shall be considered.

Board/Panel Type Products: Aestuver-T
General Information: Aestuver-T is a non-combustible product
for fire protection made from glass-fibre and perlite as light-
weight concrete being used in tunnels for 12 years.

Spray-on Type Products: Cafco FENDOLITE® MII
Cafco FENDOLITE® MII is a spray applied, single
package factory controlled cement based premix,
based on vermiculite and portland cement being
used in tunnels since 1963. In Turkey, used in the
Marmaray Project.

Spray-on Type Products: Avikote AV 650
Avikote AV 650 is a bauxite and portland cement based, spray
and/or trowel-applied product. Full scale loaded fire tests are
conducted specific for the Marmaray Project.

Surface finish after spray application:
• Surface roughness shall be less than 3mm as per the Ventilation Design. Therefore, if required trowelling will be
applied to have a smooth surface finish.
• Post painting will be applied to acheive a durable surface to tunnel cleaning.
