Filled with beautiful bows, wonderful wreaths, delicious foods and delightful music, the holidayseason is full of time-honored traditions that bring back memories of families and loved ones. Thesame is true of Mennonite Home and Woodcrest Villa. The staff, residents and volunteers at bothcommunities collaborate to honor those precious traditions that people hold so dear.

Holiday FoodWhat Thanksgiving table would be complete without the tempting smell of turkey and all of itstrimmings? Certainly not the holiday mealtime at Woodcrest Villa or Mennonite Home! Directors of Food Service Shaun Metzler (WoodcrestVilla) and JoBeth Kissinger (MennoniteHome) plan weeks in advance to ensurethat residents and their families enjoy all ofthe tastes of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

JoBeth has worked at Mennonite Homefor more than 10 years and knows howpopular the holiday meals are. “Many families invite their family members tocome in and dine with them at their ta-bles,” JoBeth explains. “Several residentsalso schedule the private dining room andbring multiple family members in to sharethe holiday with them. We provide themain meal and desserts if they would like, but some families enjoy bringing their owndesserts to make it more personal.”

Many Woodcrest Villa residents also enjoy inviting friends and family to share the holiday mealwith them in the Hummingbird or Bluebird Dining Room, or reserve the private dining room. “Our residents love to tell us how proud they are to bring family members here for holiday dinner,”says Shaun, who has been with Woodcrest Villa for close to six years.

DecorationsHoliday decorations are a way to visibly spread the cheer of the holidays and brightenpeople’s days with lights and festivity. While the Woodcrest Villa staff takes care of decorating the main gathering areas and Welcome Center, a resident committee has fun decorating the three dining areas with holiday items. The result is a sight to beholdand brings great joy to everyone passing through.

Likewise, Mennonite Home staff also add a special holiday touch to the hallways andpublic areas so that residents, staff, volunteers and visitors feel the positive spirit of theseason. Residents enjoy working with the staff to decorate in a way that fits the uniquepreferences of each household. That level of personalization helps make the communityfeel like a true home for the holidays.

TraditionsOf course, what holiday would be complete without pageantry and song? At Men-nonite Home, the staff spends part of a day spreading holiday cheer by going from roomto room and singing carols – a tradition that the residents greatly enjoy.

At Woodcrest Villa, a special ceremony, “Light Up Woodcrest,” celebrates the startof the Christmas season. Throughout December, the private dining rooms and cateringservice are busy hosting special events for the residents as many enjoy hosting theirfriends, family, clubs and organizations for a magnificent meal.

Even more important than the specific traditions and activities is the warm and welcoming holiday spirit showcased by the Mennonite Home Communities (MHC)team. Each staff member understands that they are guests in our residents’ homes and

considers it a privilegeto serve them. Theyappreciate the opportunity to sharethese important traditions with our residents and do whatthey can to make ourcommunities a truehome for the holidays.

The family of Paul Diller recently created Giving Care Scholarships for Mennonite Home Communities(MHC) employees. This program continues a Diller family tradition of providing scholarships to enable studentsto achieve their educational goals. The scholarships are available for employees who are pursuing the LPN, RN

and BSN degree, or those training as Certified Nursing Assistants.

Gennie Diller, a Woodcrest Villa resident, commented, “Paul loved the staffand the staff loved Paul. He enjoyed his stay at Mennonite Home. Hewould want to help employees prepare for higher levels of employmentresponsibility.”

The Giving Care Scholarship Committee, composed of Mim Cruz,Gennie Diller, John Sauder, Colleen Murphy, Sheri Workman and Kathy

Markward, are finalizing the application and selection procedures.

“Paul and Gennie Diller have supported MHC in various ways throughout the years,” notes Nelson Kling, President of MHC. “This Scholarship Fund will have a lasting impact on the consistency of staffing and quality of care that we provide. We thank the Diller family for their generosity and invite residents and families who appreciate the new household environment to support this fund.”

What do WCV resident volunteers Gloria Miller (pictured left) and Margaret Derstine (right)have in common with Thomas Jefferson? They cannot live without books!

Margaret took charge of the WCV Library in 1996 and introduced a computerized catalogsystem. Gloria joined the library team in 2002 after years of service in her church library.

Today the computer catalog contains 4,100 titles in the main library and the Bluebird extension. Residents also use the threedaily newspapers, 35 magazines, films,DVDs and many paperbacks that roundout the library.

Margaret and Gloria hear frequent comments of, “What a beautiful room! What a great resource:”as well as acco-lades for having many of the current bestsellers. Generous WCV residents donateseveral hundred new books per year.

In addition to being a reading resource, the library provides a beautiful setting for

special events and impromptu piano recitals by residents or their grandchildren. The WCV li-brary is a well-used and valued amenity for our residents. Visitors to the community are im-pressed by the beauty and scope of this literary treasure.

“He can move in with me!”exclaimed resident Edythe Bowers, extending a warm welcometo one of Mennonite Home’s newest volunteers...Obi, the dog.

Obi is a new Pet Therapy Volunteer, but he is well-known at Mennonite Home. Obi regularly accompanied his owner, Lori Walton, for visits with her late grandfather, JohnMyers. Obi snuggled up next to John on hisbed while Lori read aloud from the Bible.Since her grandfather’s passing, Lori real-ized how much she missed the quality timeshe and Obi spent here. Fond memories in-spired Lori to again share the joy of Obi’sgentle nature and soft furry coat with Coop-ers Run residents.

While many residents and staff love Obi & Lori, the two formed an immediate bondwith one of her grandfather’s neighbors,Edythe. Edythe declared “I LOVE Dogs! I’m a dog person.” To Lori, the volunteering is incred-ibly worthwhile: “When Edythe thanked me by giving me a big hug, I felt like I had a grandparent again! It’s so good to be back.” It certainly shows as Lori & Obi light up thefaces of the many animal lovers here at Mennonite Home.

The 2010 annual financial report for MHC represents a positive return due in part to the completion ofthe Person Centered Care renovations and the ability to meet the needs of more residents. We are so ex-cited about this new approach to care and the impact it is having on staff and residents. In addition, wealso recognized a better return on investments, resulting in an improved bottom line of $1,456,506.

As you can see on the statement, the amount written off for benevolent care is a largenumber. This is an important part of our mission and represents a cost to us of $3,770,972.The figure is influenced greatly by government reimbursement rates and our need to compensate for the cost of care versus the reimbursement rate and residents’ ability to pay.

We are proud of our skilled and compassionate team of professionals who provide ahigh level of care with a true concern for the residents they serve. As with any care-fo-cused organization, salaries, wages and employee health insurance are our largest oper-ating expense. To help control health insurance costs, this year we have transitioned to a self-funded program and are implementing an employee wellness program. Utility

prices remain volatile, so we forward contract our purchases to reduce pricing uncertainty and help keep costs in line.

In conclusion, we continue to work toward ensuring a healthy financial future for MHC through smartpurchasing decisions, strategic planning and sound investing. MHC is blessed to have a Board of Directorswho give thoughtful direction to our future and the future of the residents we serve. Thanks to all of thosewho participate in the life of MHC through your contributions, volunteering and connecting with our residents. May you be richly blessed.

Recently, a friend asked if I would do him a favor. He wanted to help an 8 year-old boy named Colin whowas experiencing difficult times. He explained that Colinhas terminal cancer and his ‘make a wish’ dream was tofly an airplane. It was a busy week, but a voice insidetold me this request should take priority.

Colin, and his mother arrived at the airport just as I was opening the hangar. Colin jumped from the car and ran to my side. Excite-ment and energy took over as he admired the big bird. The questions came inquick succession. Colin was fascinated with airplanes and totally involved as weprepared for flight.

Minutes later, we were airborne. Colin was on sensory overload and speechlessas we climbed. His face turned to a grin of amazement as we circled high abovethe patchwork quilt of fields. It was a beautiful evening — a time of joy and satis-faction that Colin didn’t want to end.

The sun was setting as I drove home, reflecting on the experience. Colin’s expressions of excitement and his smiles of joy are images I will long remember.Perhaps it was not Colin, but me, who received the greatest joy and gratification. I was experiencing the spirit of giving.

We can all experience this spirit of giving. I read somewhere that philanthropy is the love of human beings. In helping one another, we experience the words of Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Helen Keller said,“Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes happiness. It is not at-tained through self gratification but by fidelity to a worthy purpose.”

Mennonite Home Communities offers that “worthy purpose” and affords opportunities to experience the spirit of giving. Many have enriched the lives of our residents by contributing to the Capital Campaign for Person Centered Carehouseholds. Supporting the Benevolent Care Fund helps residents continue to re-ceive care during difficult financial times. Every dollar makes a difference. Per-haps that difference is felt most by the giver, as the spirit of giving enriches your own life.

The Development Committeeraises awareness and guidesthe process of raising moneyfor the Benevolent Care Fund.Benevolent Care is supportgiven to residents who becomeunable to meet the costs of living in this community.

The Development Committeeand Board of Directors want to thank our donors for theirgifts to Mennonite Home Com-munities. On the followingpages, we list those donorswho have contributed to oursuccess between July 1, 2009and June 30, 2010. We thankeveryone for their kindness andsupport of Mennonite HomeCommunities.

Seventy-five founding members of the 1903 Legacy Society enjoyed warm fellowship, a delicious meal, and inspirational speakers in the Hummingbird Dining Room on June 12,2010.

Glenn Weber, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, greeted our guests and thanked them fortheir generosity. He reminded the audience of the historical role of philanthropy at MennoniteHome Communities. Generous donors have blessed us from the financial support of the original trustees, to the gift of the land from John and Lydia Landis, down to our current generous supporters.

Greg Pierce, Director of Development, shared the Mellinger familylegacy of serving Mennonite Home. Jacob D. Mellinger helped to digthe cellar of the Home in 1904 as a youth; served as Superintendentfrom 1946 through 1961; and finally spent his remaining years as a resident and volunteer. His son and wife, Abe and Gladys Mellinger, made significant gifts in memory of Jacob. The Board directed thosegifts to the “Securing Our Second Century”capital campaign.

Judy Harnley shared that the legacy of MennoniteHome Communities will always be that of lookingto God for guidance. Residents and their familiescan feel in a positive and tangible way our love and concern for their well-being.

Dick McFarland opened with Winston Churchill’s quote,“We make a living by what we earn; we make a life by what we give.”Aftersuccessful careers in the military, government and private industry, Dick feelsblessed to be able to give back to this fine organization that has taken greatcare of several of his family members.

Wickie Weaver choose Mennonite Home Communitiesbecause of its reputation of providing excellent care, which she sees first-hand as a volunteer. The tradition of Benevolent Care for residents of limited resources is extremely important to all residents. Her investment in Charitable Gift Annuities helps her with increased income during her life, and then benefits her neighbors who need Benevolent Care.
