FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Is there a parent who hasn’t had to find an answer for the child who asks, “Are we nearly there yet?” It’s a question we might well be asking ourselves at this stage of our Lenten journey. Perhaps it’s time to recall the words of a preface for Lent, as it used to be prayed: “Each year you give us this joyful season when we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed.” Yes, it’s a joyful season, a time of renewal. It’s a gift, a grace, We don’t journey alone — we have the companionship of the whole Church along the way. For the whole community of faith Lent is a fresh opportunity to be set free, to discover what our deepest desire really is. We can thank Richard de Wych, the 13 th century Bishop of Chichester, for taking us to the heart of Lent with the prayer “to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly.” A pilgrim’s hope indeed that we might all pray day by day on our way through Lent.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Is there a parent who hasn’t had to find an answer for the child who asks, “Are we nearly there yet?” It’s a question we might well be asking ourselves at this stage of our Lenten journey. WEEK 5: BANGLADESH

GIVE LENT

100%

Salma was just 18 years old, pregnant and fearful for her life and that of her unborn child, when she featured in Project Compassion 2013. In Bangladesh, maternal and infant mortality rates are tragically high. During her first pregnancy, Salma was very sick and in distress. She sought the help of a midwife trained by Caritas’ Safe Motherhood Program. Six years on, she’s now a healthy mother of two strong, happy children. Salma is committed to giving her children the education they need to provide them with the future she hoped for.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help reduce infant mortality rates in

countries like Bangladesh and provide hope to pregnant women in remote communities

for happy and healthy families. Lives change when we all give 100%.

You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/

projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

Project Compassion boxes and envelopes are available on the table in the foyer.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He look up and said, ‘woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘No one, sir,’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus, ‘go away, and don’t sin any more.’

Commentary On The Gospel This is a gem of a short story. It is a one-act drama with three scenes — the accusing action of the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus’ converse with them, and Jesus’ dialogue with the woman. After all these years the appeal of the story remains undimmed. The hypocrisy of the authorities in using the woman to try and trap Jesus, the blatant absence of the male perpetrator, the wise but mysterious way Jesus deals with the dilemma put to him and his compassionate treatment of the woman —all these features of the story are vividly and economically sketched. Jesus’ final words to the woman, now addressed to us, are both gift (“Neither do I condemn you”) and task (“Go away, and don’t sin any more”).
