This Lenten season, Dunbarton-Fairport United Church will be supporting the Special Olympics in the Durham region. "The Special Olympics was founded upon the notion: sport has an incredible capacity to transform lives, change attitudes and make communities stronger. By bringing people together, Special Olympics teaches us to recognize our similarities rather than focusing on our differences. For individuals with an intellectual disability, Special Olympics is often the only place where they have an opportunity to participate in their communities, and to develop a strong belief in themselves. For many, it is a gateway to empowerment, competence, and acceptance. The Greater Durham Community of Special Olympics Ontario has more than 300 registered athletes and over 100 volunteers committed to the growth of athletes. Every facet of the community is dedicated to enriching their lives.”

Welcome to Massey Centre - New lives start here

We are a Children’s Mental Health Centre for pregnant and parenting adolescents. Each young mom who comes to the Massey Centre is vulnerable and needs help. She has decided to keep her baby – but she doesn’t have the emotional, social or economic support to care for her baby. With your help, the Massey Centre makes sure each young mom has access to prenatal care, learns how to care for her baby, continues her education, and develops the skills needed to build a successful life and relationship with her baby. When a mom leaves the Massey Centre she goes with new found confidence and belief in her potential and that of her child. Massey Centre is inspired by the vision of a community where adolescent mothers and their children achieve their full potential. With your support, the Massey Centre vision is not only

possible but will be the experience of every Massey mother and child.

Without support, the mothers will likely remain in poverty, perhaps struggle with long term mental health issues and may lose custodial rights to their children. We may fear their life story – and that of their child - is already written, that there is nothing we can do. Yes, the cycle will

continue.

But you can help stop it. You can care. You can believe in their potential…one mother and child

at a time.

At one point or another, we all need someone to believe in us and our potential. But what happens if you don’t have that? You may not be surprised to learn that the adolescent mothers

who seek support at the Massey Centre:

• come from poor families and live in poor neighborhoods

• 80% report experiencing violence including rape and incest

• have no or little support from their family or partner

• lack basic education as they have not yet finished high school

Update on our Refugee Support Group

We are overjoyed to hear that Teame and Amine will arrive from Nairobi through London on Wednesday, March 9th in the afternoon. Our committee is now in full welcome and arrival mode and are ready to spring into action. Watch for further details as our needs arise. Thank you so much for the generosity you have shown to this effort.

On Sunday, February 14th, I was invited to St. Mark’s United, Whitby to speak once more on the Refugee Situation and our effort. They have generously decided to support our group financially over Lent. We are grateful for their support and all who support us in any way.

Thank you to Kimberly Collins for chairing our AGM during our service this past Sunday. This has been our third such way of doing this and it helps us understand that the decisions we make as a church family need to be surrounded by prayer and song. REWRITING THE LORD’S PRAYER IN OUR OWN WORDS

Our final project for the Fall 2015 session of bible study was to rewrite the Lord’s Prayer in our

own words. Below are further samples of our work:

Bible Study runs on Sunday mornings at 8:30 am or on Monday mornings at 11:00 am.

Registration is not required, just show up when you can and follow the noise to the lounge.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our father who is in heaven and among us,

Holy is your name

Bring us back to Eden.

Teach us to follow your Word here on earth.

Sustain us.

Forgive my sins and I try to forgive others.

Keep us from our weaknesses,

And let us be surrounded by your love.

Amen

Our Father, who we hold in reverence and reigns over us with your Will.

We ask that we are open to your presence and ask for your blessings, your encouragement, guidance, empowerment and peace.

Forgive our misgivings and teach us how to choose wisely without being tempted.

Help us to learn to forgive those who we feel have done others wrong and to understand we need to change so we may live and follow in the ways of Jesus’ teachings.

For the Kingdom is yours, the power and the glory.

RE-WRITING THE LORD'S PRAYER

The our great mentor who exists beyond the realms of the space time-continuum. We honour you. We

ask us for the courage and for your guidance to represent your vision for us on Earth. We are fortunate

that hunger is not a concern for us. Yet, we do not rely on bread alone. Please provide us the

sustenance we require to be happy whether it be in the form of a friend or guidance so we may carry out

your will. Please make us sensitive to the situation so that we can embody your spirit using your will as

our moral compass even when it goes against norms.

I make so many mistakes realizing my ability (and all people really) to make decisions have been

repeatedly documented to be poor and are limited by bias. However, please forgive me for my short

fallings and to help me be aware of them. With conflict, there are differing view points and histories

that it is challenging to find a one-size-fits all solution. Help me forgive others and to be understanding

of their perspectives (even though my automatic response is to want to blow them). Please make us

aware and help us combat the selfish and evil ways within ourselves. You are the amazing entity that

understands the workings of the universe and exists beyond space-time. We as humans trapped in a

three-dimensional space cannot comprehend your awesomeness. Thank-you for listening and caring

about us.

COUNTERS NEEDED

The method used at Dunbarton-Fairport for the counting and deposit of the weekly offering is for a rotation of volunteers to be used. We like to have enough people in this rotation so a volunteer only has to count about every 3 months. Currently we don’t have enough volunteers to be able to spread it out this much. Do you have a spare Sunday afternoon once in a while? Could you look after this, taking it home, counting, recording and dropping the money at the bank later in the day? If you could help the rotation out, please

MINUTE FOR STEWARDS

In keeping with Rev. Jeff’s Ash Wednesday theme of getting your hands dirty as disciples…We as stewards or the finance committee as many know us you could say have ink on our hands from discerning how to spend the money you give and we receive from the outside as a church. But our work is more than just paying salaries and roof repairs or basement leaks. We as Stewards are called to look at the overall health of the church and us as God’s people. So while many of you might think our work with budgets for instance is only about the bottom line of deficits or surplus…it is much more than that. You see each line of the budget tells our story as the church family of Dunbarton-Fairport. We look at how we can fund how we worship, how we help form faith in our children, our teenagers, our adults. We look at how we can provide leadership both clergy and lay. We also look at how we spend our money on our building which also enables us to welcome outside groups and therefore become part of the neighborhood. We also look at how we can encourage everyone to prayerfully look at how much we contribute to support the finances of the church. To look to see if our givings have increased over the years, if we can give even more. Because we are not just about paying for the buildings…but for you and me, for all of us to be able to grow in faith and get our hands dirty as disciples. But this takes money, and this takes creative minds, and a willingness to do business differently and faithfully as a church. We would love to speak to people who might like to join us on this committee. For

the love of our church family and for the neighborhood and the world around us. Amen!

MINUTES FOR SESSION

As part of Rev. Jeff’s challenge on Ash Wednesday to look at Lent as a time to get our

hands dirty as disciples…let me talk to you a bit about our Session Committee.

We are tasked with looking after the spiritual needs of the church and trying to engage everyone in how that can happen. We work hand in hand with Worship, Christian Education and are excited to add Mission Outreach and Advocacy. Our role is not do-ers but to engage various groups and committees in discussion and concrete ways of deepening our lives as disciples. We have been involved in supporting the Affirming and Diversity group that led us

through the Affirming process.

We also are responsible for keeping the roll of members, approving baptisms, looking at ways we can better be visible in the community. We work in supporting the hopes and dreams of our congregation but also our world and how we can better be part of it. We have also been involved in challenging our congregations to look at the committees, of term limits, of encouraging members to share their gifts and talents and to know when a

sabbatical from a committee is healthy for both the committee and themselves.

We are currently working on the many wonderful responses you gave during the shared sermon at the AGM on Jan 31st and looking forward to seeing how they can move us

forward.

Our committee has taken on many directions over the years but is that not important to show that the committee is there to exist for the congregation and not for itself as a committee. We are always trying to find our way as disciples, as a congregation and a committee to grow in our faith and not remain stagnant. Dirty hands show a willingness as

a church family to become part of one another’s story and respond with love.

We are always willing to hear your ideas in how we can grow spiritually.

Church at the Pub

Tuesday, March 8th is our “Church at the Pub” at The Fox Goes Free here in Pickering from 6:30-8:30pm. With the recent events at Dunbarton High School, the topic will be “Being a Safe Space at church and in the world…what does that mean?” I will bring along our new Mission Statement as part of our discussion. You buy your meal and join in the conversation.

Today is my one year anniversary post kidney transplant. It was only possible as Andrew agreed to be a donor, in order for me to receive a live kidney. Both of us clearly remember how incredibly supportive the congregation was. We will never forget that. Even today when at church, we are often asked how we are doing. Open Arms Church of Jesus Christ:

Starting Thursday, March 3rd, we welcome to our Church building a new congregation, the “Open Arms Church of Jesus Christ”. They will be having bible study on Tuesday and Friday evenings and worship services on Sunday afternoons.

Their vision: “To have a church body that is led by Spirit filled leaders, who recognize and discern the Lords body (God's people) and their gifting; whose endeavour is to seek and train up godly men and woman in the truth of God's word and purpose for their life! A body that looks beyond faults and are able to cultivate God's chosen one's, through love, to help them to live a victorious life of godly service and cultivate others towards the same until the coming of our Lord.”

We ask that you welcome this congregation, share our space, and celebrate our community outreach.

Summer Spectacular Garage Sale –

June 18th – 8 A.M. to 2 P.M. As in the past few years, the summer spectacular Garage Sale will be held on the lawn at the Join us on Saturday, June 18th from 8:00 a.m. To 2:00 p.m. for our annual Summer Spectacular garage sale hosted on the lawn at Dunbarton-Fairport United Church. This wonderful fundraiser happens rain or shine. In addition to the gigantic garage sale, there is a BBQ, bake sale and home party event. The United Church Women of our congregation organize the home party event which includes vendors such as Tupperware and Avon and collect the table rental fees. If you are interested in helping with the event keep an eye out for the sign-up sheets. Help is needed on the Friday night and early Saturday morning to assist with set up. Donations of good used books (no textbooks) and household items (clean and functioning) are appreciated but we ask that the items be brought to the church on the Friday evening after 6:00 p.m.

Moderator urges Prime Minister Trudeau

to protect non-violent actions for just peace.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

In this season of discernment and reflection we call Lent, I bring you greetings from The United Church of Canada. It has come to my attention that the following motion is before the House of Commons:

“That, given Canada and Israel share a long history of friendship as well as economic and diplomatic relations, the House reject the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which promotes the demonization and delegitimization of the State of Israel, and call upon the government to condemn any and all attempts by Canadian organizations, groups or individuals to promote the BDS movement, both here at home and abroad.”

On behalf of The United Church of Canada, I am writing to express strong concern about this motion. During your campaign, you expressed your vigilance to uphold and protect Canada’s fundamental commitment to democracy. We ask that your government defeat this motion and uphold the fundamental freedoms of “thought, belief, opinion, and expression” as enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The United Church seeks to live into a vision of Canada as a just society within a caring world, expressed in active, thoughtful involvement in society. This is reflected in the church’s commitment to working with others seeking peace with justice in Israel and Palestine. This work is rooted in the gospel mandate to be peacemakers and in response to the calls of Palestinian and Israeli partners to join them in working toward a just peace for both peoples.

The United Church denounces all questions of Israel’s right to exist or that seek to undermine its legitimacy as a state. The church holds “zero tolerance” of anti-semitism whenever and wherever it occurs. We urge you and your government to be part of global efforts to promote a non-violent, negotiated end to the occupation and a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis.

The United Church of Canada does not describe itself as being part of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. However, we do hold strong commitments to democratic rights and freedoms, which include the right of citizens to engage in constructive critique of both Canadian as well as foreign governments. The United Church of Canada stands in solidarity with groups and individuals exercising this right in nonviolent, peaceful ways. We urge you to stand firmly for democracy and defeat this motion.

My prayers and the prayers of our church are with you as exercise leadership on behalf of our nation. May God bless and guide you.

P.A.R. is the Pre-Authorized Remittance programme, which allows for an automated monthly transfer of funds from your designated financial institution to Dunbarton-Fairport United Church. Information and enrollment forms are available on the table in the narthex. A completed form, along with your voided cheque, must be returned to the P.A.R. Visits to the sick in hospitals and home bound. If you know of folks in our congregation who are in need of

a visit please contact the office. Rev. Jeff depends on your help. He does love to visit.

Baptisms: If you are interested in having your children baptized, please contact the church office to speak to Rev Jeff or see him after services. Also anyone who is an adherent and interested in joining the church
