Chancellor’s Message

A TIME OF CELEBRATION

Congratulations to our Spring 2008 Graduates!

My heartfelt congratulations are extended to the 2008 spring graduates and their families.

As we conclude this year-long celebration in recognition of the 60th Anniversary of our University, it’s a wonderful time to reflect upon each of your personal stories (mo`olelo) and our collective history.

This ceremonial walk is really a metaphor for your personal pilgrimage, your history and your journey that provides the momentum for the next chapter in your life. Under every cap and gown in this room there is a mo‘olelo of experiences, challenges, events and achievements that have culminated in this moment. We are here today to celebrate your journey and your mo`olelo as you wait to receive recognition and confirmation of your degree.

We join your ‘ohana, friends, mentors and our esteemed faculty in celebrating your story. We know that your celebration includes many people in your ‘ohana from family members to friends, mentors and our esteemed faculty and we, together with your supporters, celebrate your success.

The achievements of the Class of 2008 are exceptional. You all deserve applause. You all deserve recognition. And you all deserve to stand very proud and tall, because this is an unforgetable milestone in your life.

I am very proud to be Chancellor of our University as we celebrate 60 remarkable years. We owe a significant debt to the leaders who have built this strong foundation and we are indebted to them for their leadership and contributions. I, too, stand tall in acknowledgement of the achievements of our University and we can all take pride in the accomplishments of the past 60 years, because they belong to everyone. Our history will continue to live on in our students, alumni and faculty. I’m counting on history repeating itself with another 60 years of outstanding performance!

Please join me in celebrating the conclusion of our 60th Anniversary and extending congratulations to our 2008 spring graduates!

Warmest Aloha and Congratulations!

Rose Y. Tseng, Chancellor

Alumni Message

Dear Graduates,

On behalf of the University of Hawai`i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association, I want to congratulate you on your fine academic achievements. I commend you on the successful completion of your coursework, and earning your degree here at UH Hilo. Among you are future engineers, doctors, law-enforcement officials, biologists, computer technicians, teachers, and many more. I urge you to take pride in recognizing the diverse talents of your fellow schoolmates and give them your congratulations as well.

Oftentimes graduation serves as a time of reflection, as well as exploration. Whether it be that first memory of walking onto campus as a wide-eyed freshman and waiting in line at the Bookstore for ‘first dibs’ on used books, or that final study group meeting you held to prepare for THE final exam, I encourage you to draw on these experiences in years to come as you face the challenges and opportunities in front of you.

I also want to welcome you to the rank of alumni! As the Graduating Class of 2008, you have been armed with the tools necessary to succeed in your chosen field/career. I know you will carry the alumni torch with pride and joy just like many others before you.

As you venture on to the next exciting chapter of your life, I encourage you to stay connected with your alma mater and rely on the friendships and relationships you have developed. Your friends and mentors from college will remain with you the rest of your life.

Your UH Hilo Alumni and Friends `Ohana wishes you the very best in all your future endeavors. Congratulations again on your successes, both past and future!

All the best!

A Message from the Student Association President

“Our individuality is all, all, that we have. There are those who barter it for security, those who repress it for what they believe is the betterment of the whole society, but blessed in the twinkle of the morning star is the one who nurtures and rides it, in grace and love and wit, from peculiar station to peculiar station along life’s bittersweet route.”

-Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume

Real life is not something that begins when you grab hold of that esteemed document representing academic achievement. Real life is now, present tense. I believe that we are so busy looking back on what was just accomplished and conceptualizing what is next, that we often lose site of the NOW because we have to.

“I have to…” is a popular phrase directed at what encompasses our busy life styles. It is often used begrudgingly, but aren’t we gifted with the choice of whether or not to have responsibilities? We have the opportunity to attend a University. We have the intellectual ability and determination to work through the very challenging process of attaining our education and our esteemed degree. Having opportunities offers us the privilege of choice.

During a recap of the abundance of “have to” in my life, a woman asked me, “When do you breathe?” My first inclination was to respond with a “Never,” as though my responsibilities were something happening to me. Instead, I took a long breath and replied, “Always.”

We all have gifts and with them the privilege to choose our present. So, my best advice is to “Take a deep breath” and enjoy all the opportunities that come your way. The choice is yours! Breathe deeply!

Lani Dawn Thru-Fine President University of Hawai’i at Hilo Student Association

The University of Hawai`i at Hilo Student Association cordially requests that you join them for refreshments in the concession area of the Stadium immediately following this

Academic RegaliaThe academic costume worn by faculty during commencement comes from an old tradition dating from the Middle Ages. At that time all students were clerics. Academic regalia was worn to keep students warm as well as to identify the religious order to which the student belonged.

In America, academic costumes were established based on the intercollegiate code of 1895. Each aspect of the costume, such as gown color, mortarboard tassel, and sleeve shape, indicate something about the wearer and the highest degree received.

Most gowns are black, but some schools use brightly colored gowns. The color of the tassel indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer; a doctor’s cap frequently bears a tassel of gold. Sleeves that are pointed are worn by holders of a bachelor’s degree, oblong sleeves by holders of master’s degrees, and bell‐shaped sleeves indicate the wearer holds a doctorate or specialist degree. The doctor is distinguished by the three bars that adorn the sleeves of the gown.

The brightly colored hoods are the outstanding feature of the academic costume. They represent both the field of study and the university from which the degree was earned, as represented by the colors of both the border and the lining.

Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today’s graduation candidates reflect their major.

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Hawai‘i Pono‘iMusic by Henri Berger Lyrics by David Kaläkaua
