My name is Eula. I was born and raised in Mississippi, and I raised all four of my children

there. One of my daughters, however, married an abusive man who often beat her in front of their three children. One day, he beat her real bad. She stumbled inside my home, blood flowing everywhere. My grandsons, who were just 7 and 5 years old at the time, had seen it all.

Starting Over After that, the judge awarded me custody of my three grandchildren. I was so sick of everything that was happening, in 2006 we moved to Richmond, California, where one of my sisters lives. When I arrived, my sister told me about the Bay Area

According to Psalm 127, “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” The Lord built the Bay Area Rescue Mission — but in these economically challenging times, He has used compassionate people like you to keep the doors of our

Mission open. In fact, many of our supporters not only continued to give, but doubled their contributions. We are eternally grateful for you. Yet despite recent improvements in our economy, significant challenges remain. Over the past year, overall donations have fallen, while requests for food, shelter, and other necessities at the Bay Area Rescue Mission have increased 21%! The painful truth is, if our donations do not increase soon, we face the real possibility of needing to cut services at a time when hurting people need us most.

Easter is all about second chances and new life For people who are homeless, every day is a life-and-death issue. But Easter reminds us

that God gives us all a second chance at life. And God uses the Bay Area Rescue Mission and our partnership with generous people like you to rescue lives and give them that second chance. To put your donation to work immediately, please use the remit slip enclosed. You may also give your gift on our secure website, www.BayAreaRescue.org. Also, feel free to call us at 1-888-343-FOOD. Thank you for being a compassionate friend to the homeless, the poor, and the needy in the Bay Area during this season of Resurrection, Hope, and Second Chances.

Rescue Mission, which offered us a room and the chance to join their Transitional Living Program. When I moved into our room, I was completely broke down. Physically, I had back problems, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. My self-esteem was gone and my spirit was broken. But I had two boys and an 18-month-old granddaughter to raise.

Rebuilding on Spiritual Ground The Bay Area Rescue Mission brought stability to the children and me. The program offered me

the counseling and spiritual guidance I needed. The

spiritual guidance was especially important. The Bible had always been a source of comfort for me. I had grown up knowing the Lord. So this was

a great place for me. We stayed at the Bay

Area Rescue Mission for a year and a half, giving me time

to get my feet back on the ground. When it was time to leave, they even helped me find a nice place to live. My life now is so much better. When I moved to Richmond, it was the lowest point of my life. But now, my self-esteem is much stronger and I’m able to do so much more for my grandchildren. The Bay Area Rescue Mission turned my life around. I am truly happy.

…My life was broke down…

Now I live on a firm foundation

“The painful truth is, if our donations do not increase soon, we face the real possibility of needing to cut services.”

A Message from John

Over the past two years, we’ve all watched as

communities throughout the Bay Area have suffered

failed businesses, rising homelessness, lost savings,

and growing despair. Tens of thousands of men and women

go to bed each night wondering whether they’ll ever have a

second chance.

Easter, the day 2,000 years ago when Jesus defeated death

and reclaimed His life, is God’s promise that we all get a

second chance. And that’s what the Bay Area Rescue Mission

is all about — giving hurting men, women and children the chance to rebuild their

lives, the chance to experience new birth and new life.

And every day, this is the extraordinary difference generous people like you are

making in the lives of hundreds of men and women like James and Eula, whom you

read about in this newsletter. They often come hoping for little more than a hot meal

or a warm bed for the night — until they meet Jesus.

Then when they dare to believe in His promise of a second chance at life, they

join our 12-month recovery program, where they receive the counseling and long-

term help they need to re-enter society as New Creations of our Living Savior.

Hurting men, women and children discover all things become new.

Easter has special meaning for me personally. See, I know all about second

chances. Twenty eight years ago, I was a rising star in white-collar corporate America.

Cocaine brought me crashing back to earth, and I ended up homeless, sleeping in

a parking garage.

But on January 17, 1983, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior at a rescue mission

just like the Bay Area Rescue Mission. There I learned the truth of 2 Corinthians 5:17:

“If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation.

The old things have passed away and all things have become new.”

At the Bay Area Rescue Mission — and in my life personally — this is what Easter

really represents. The old things have passed away. They are dead and buried. And yet

there is hope in the resurrection. All things have become new.

Thank you for your extraordinary generosity and for participating in this

life-giving mission of Second Chances.

On behalf of the poor and homeless,

Rev. John M. Anderson, Executive Director

“My self-esteem was

gone and my spirit was broken.

But I had three grandchildren

to raise.”
