BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College’s Director of Athletics, Curt Kendall announced Monday that Erin Albert has been hired as the new head volleyball coach for the Eagles’ program. Albert becomes just the third head coach in the program’s history.

“We’re really excited to have Erin here at Bridgewater as our next volleyball coach. She brings a lot of energy, knowledge and experience from nearly every level that will help her in maintaining the successes and tradition of the Bridgewater Volleyball program,” said Kendall.

Albert comes to Bridgewater from Chatham University where she has been the assistant coach since 2009. She also served as athletic events coordinator while at Chatham.

During her college playing career, Albert was a four-year starter for NCAA Division III national power Ju-niata College. Juniata won the Landmark Conference title and regional title in each of her four seasons. She was a member of the 2006 team that won the NCAA Division III national championship. During the 2007 season she was named honorable mention All-American by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association). In 2008, Albert was named the MVP at the NCAA regional tournament and earned a spot on the NCAA National All-Tournament Team.

“I’m excited to be a part of the strong tradition that is Bridgewater College Volleyball. I feel that success is a direct bi-product of the people that you are surrounded with and Bridgewater surrounds you with great people. I’m really proud to be a part of the Bridgewater family,” said Albert.

Albert graduated from Juniata with a major in chemistry and a minor in psychology.

Will the 2011 spring season be as magical for Bridgewater College as the Spring of 2010 was?

Spring Sports Preview

Page 7: Spring 2011 Eagle Club Magazine
Page 8: Spring 2011 Eagle Club Magazine

What a season the Spring of 2010 was for the Bridgewater College sports teams. At the beginning of the season, the teams were unable to get outside due to over two feet of snow being on

the fields, but by the end of the season there were two more conference championships hoisted and a national champion crowned.

The 2011 Spring sports season will be headlined by a number of what ifs, and a team defending its crown with nearly every player returning from the 2010 team that hoisted the first ODAC golf championship in school history.

One new coach also joins the mix, while we see the return of veteran coaches and fielders in baseball and soft-ball, and premier putters in golf.

Let’s not forget the tennis team which competed at record levels in 2010 and will look to press on with an experienced bunch on the men’s team and a talented set of youngsters on the women’s side.

BaseballThe Bridgewater College baseball team returns a strong lineup in 2011 as the Eagles begin their quest to de-

fend their conference championship.Bridgewater defeated Lynchburg for the ODAC title, the 13th championship in the program’s history. The

Eagles earned their seventh trip to the NCAA regionals where they lost two straight.Bridgewater will hinge its hopes in 2011 on a strong group of returning position players. Catcher Devon

Snow, infielders Alex Nuttycombe and Brett Howell, outfielders Kevin Kirk and Jonathan Mason and DH An-drew Hacker all return to the starting lineup.

The Eagles were picked first in the conference preseason poll.Snow, a junior, emerged as one of the top catchers in the ODAC during the 2010 season. He hit for a .391

average and led the team in stolen bases with 15. Senior Alex Hogge gives the Eagles an experienced backup with promising freshmen Ryan Smith, Tyler Hoffman and Jeff Buckler waiting in the wings. Smith could also be a candidate for outfield duty.

Nuttycombe bounced back from a slow start to win the job at second and finished the year with a .253 average. Sophomore Matt Maher and freshman Nick Fulk could also see time at second. Both Maher and Fulk will also play in the outfield at times.

Howell will man one of the corner infield spots for the Eagles this season. He hit .288 with a team-high eight homers. Hacker and first-year player Dustin Arrowood will see time at first. Hacker hit .331 with five homers and 35 RBI last year.

Junior college transfer Jay Thompson will get the nod at third base when Howell is playing at first. Thompson had an out-standing two years at Lenoir and his bat could figure into the middle of the Eagles lineup.

Freshman Bryan Sanderson will get the first look at short with another freshman, Zach Hynes, also available. Hynes could also play in the outfield.

The corner outfield spots are set with Kirk in left and Mason in right. Kirk, a second-team All-ODAC pick, led the team in hitting with a .398 average. Mason turned in a solid first year with a .311 average.

In center, sophomore Christian Armstrong along with fresh-men Fulk and Derek Shifflett will vie for at-bats. Snow will also see time in center when not behind the dish.

Freshmen Tyler Conley and John Lezcano and transfer Tan-

Senior second baseman Kevin Kirk looks to aid Bridgewater’s push back to the pinnacle of the ODAC in 2011.

Page 9: Spring 2011 Eagle Club Magazine

ner Croy will also be vying for time in the outfield. The Eagles lost a ton of innings from its championship squad, but junior Kevin Chandler, sophomore Joseph

Lucas and senior Jake Wade return to anchor the starting staff.Chandler finished with a 6-4 record a year ago and was second on the team in innings pitched. Lucas was

effective out of the pen a year ago with a 1-0 record and a 3.64 ERA in 13 appearances. Wade logged 14 appear-ances with two starts in 2010.

Transfer Tyler Milstead and freshmen Dillon Via and Robert Gallet could also figure into the starting rotation.Junior John Bayse made 11 appearances a year ago and should emerge as one of the Eagles’ top options out of

the pen. Armstrong, Hacker and Mark Smith could also figure into the mix in relief.Several freshmen – Arrowood, Croy, Shifflett, Conley, Kyle Hen-

shaw, Tyler Slanovec, Lezcano and Tres Winkler - could also get an opportunity to earn innings in a relief role.

SoftballDepth with be the cornerstone of head coach Donnie Fulk’s

Eagles softball team, but a talented set of youngsters will be tested in the circle for the Eagles through the season.

Behind the pitching staff, the Eagles return a load of experienced players, including the everyday starters from a season ago, when Bridgewater posted a 33-10 campaign. But the team also graduated its all-time strikeouts leader in Ashley Gills, and, Lindsay Lam, who was turned to in a number of big game situations and delivered some key victories in recent years.

For Fulk, the team’s successes will hinge on the development of his pitchers.

Bridgewater also brings back its entire infield which aided the team in posting the best fielding percentage in school history a season ago.

While the entire infield returns, the Eagles will be making some defensive switches in the middle infield from the way the team lined up in 2010. Hillary Rees will switch from second base to shortstop, while Emily Morris moves back to second base after a two-year hiatus from playing defensively on a regular basis.

In the outfield, everyone returns as well, but returning depth will cause the hottest bats and the best gloves to take to the field on a daily basis as the abilities of every player will give them a chance to see more playing time.

Most Division III teams are happy to have one solid catcher, but the problem for the Eagles isn’t the number they have behind the dish, it’s going to be how to get three solid catchers as much playing time as possible.

“I like our chances, we have a great group which has worked hard in the offseason and is excited to get on the field for the first game,” commented Fulk.

Bridgewater starts the season on February 26 with a trip to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood and hopes to end the season with the program’s first ODAC tournament championship and a ticket to the NCAA Championships.

GolfFor Bridgewater, the 2009-10 was a dream. A pair of tournament victories including the program’s first-ever

ODAC Championship were just a few of the highlights. But one upping that, well that could be a challenge.Bridgewater roared out of the gate in 2009 with a victory at the Tom Kinder Memorial on the team’s home

course which was a sign of great things to come for the Eagles.Following a rough start to the 2010 part of the season, the Eagles cruised to a pair of strong finishes in the

final two tournaments of the year leading up to the ODAC Championships.

Aven Thomas and the rest of the softball team open up the 2011 season on February 26 at Hood.

Page 10: Spring 2011 Eagle Club Magazine

In the “Sweetest Place on Earth”, the Eagles struggled on day one before charging back to nearly make the cut on day two. Despite their late charge, the Eagles missed the cut, but the season wasn’t finished yet. Then sophomore Travis Gahman put together a solid two rounds before winning a two-hole playoff to advance to the final two rounds of the NCAA Championships.

The bright spot: Everyone returns. And that’s the answer to our question.

Bridgewater returns every member of the five-man team that made it all the way to the NCAA Championships in 2010. Yes, that’s right, all five.

BC returns the ODAC Individual Champion, Mike Red-wood, NCAA Final Round Qualifier Travis Gahman and an arsenal of talented golfers to the fray in 2010-11.

Head coach Lee Williams also brought in a talented group of freshmen that will challenge the lead pack.

“The three guys coming in are all five or six handicaps. For them, it’s just all about how quickly they adjust to college life and the course we play on,” commented head coach Lee Williams on his freshmen. “The beauty of golf is how objective it is, if they score better than their team-mates, they play.”

Bridgewater opens the Spring slate on February 28 at the Pine Needles Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C.

Track and FieldThe Bridgewater College indoor track teams return several talented performers as they prepare for competi-

tion this winter. The women’s team will miss one of the top all-around athletes in the nation with the graduation of do-it-all

performer Courtney Hartman. Hartman earned All-American honors in the indoor pentathlon and won the na-tional championship in the heptathlon during the outdoor season.

The women will be bolstered by the return of senior Christina Rhodes, an All-American in the pole vault dur-ing the outdoor season. Rhodes is a three-time conference champion during the indoor season.

The Eagles should also fare well in the throws as junior Katie Cummings placed in both the shot put and weight throw at the conference meet. She is the BC record-holder in each event.

On the track, sophomore Morgan Keplinger returns in the 800, an event she won at the ODAC Outdoor Championship meet.

The Eagles should also be solid in the distance events where sophomore Molly Smith returns. Smith set new BC records in the mile and 5000 meters during her freshman in-door season. Sophomore Olivia Mills is also expected to excel in the distance events after qualifying for the national meet during cross country season in the fall.

The men’s squad returns several solid performers to the team that finished second in last year’s conference indoor meet.

Sophomore Jacob Kroko will anchor throws. Kroko was named conference Freshman of the Year in 2010 after winning the shot and placing fourth in the weight throw at the ODAC meet.

Leigh Bradley returns to lead the jumpers after placing sec-ond in both the high jump and triple jump a year ago.

The distance events should also be well-manned as several mem-bers go into the winter after a solid cross country season. Jordan White and Brian Barnett both placed at the ODAC meet a year ago.

The Eagles also return one of the top hurdlers in the conference as sophomore Dalton Slagle is back after finishing second in the 55 meter hurdles a year ago.

In the sprints, junior Julius Delbridge returns to lead the way after winning the 200 meters at the ODAC Outdoor Championship meet.

LacrosseThe Bridgewater College women’s lacrosse begins a new era in

2011 as the Eagles take the field under the guidance of first-year head coach Kim Lowry.

The Eagles return seven players to the field this season led by senior returning starter Leslie Crawford. Crawford was second on the team a year ago in points with 45 and goals scored with 32.

Also returning to the starting lineup are junior Megan Bach and sophomores Caitlin Costello, Aili Knapp and Liz Blake. Blake will return as a defender while Knapp and Bach started at midfield a year ago. Bach scored 12 goals and added 10 assists while Knapp finished with 15 goals and 10 assists. Costello returns to bolster the BC attack after scoring 29 goals to go along with 10 assists during her freshmen year.

Senior Amanda Barna and sophomore Savannah Key both saw valuable playing time in 2010 and should see plenty on minutes on defense this season.

The Eagles were picked to finish seventh in the ODAC preseason poll.

Women’s TennisThis season, the Eagles will be without the services of Megan

Mathias and Alissa Michael, who graduated last Spring. Mathias was the No. 1 player on the squad for the entire season, while Mi-chael was the consistent No. 3.

“It’s never easy replacing seniors like Megan and Alissa, but I do think we brought some solid recruits in and return a good group of players, so while we will miss those two, I think we may have a chance to replace them as well,” said head coach Conor Smith who is in the midst of his fourth season at the helm.

Aside from the team’s losses, the Eagles return a talented group, including the duo of Emily Schweitzer and Ally McConaughy, which set the school wins record last season in doubles play. Schweitzer and McConaughy rolled to a 17-4 record last season to eclipse the old Bridgewater standard en route to earning Old Do-minion Athletic Conference honors as a tandem.

Bridgewater also returns its top performer in singles from a sea-son ago in sophomore Amanda Gorby. Gorby won a team-high 14 matches on the season, including a 12-7 mark in conference play, mostly from her No. 6 post.

Lacrosse player Leslie Crawford looks to get the Bridgewater lacrosse team back to its winning ways in 2011.

Junior Emily Schweitzer will look to keep her record-setting pace alive in doubles play in 2011.

The Eagles also return their No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 players from last season as sophomore Olivia Stone, se-nior Morgan McGhee and McConaughy rejoin the fray.

Smith also brought in a talented class of freshmen to push the returners in the ladder. The Eagles welcome three freshmen to the mix in local product Katy Bergey, Winchester native Katie Gordon

and Lynchburg product Brittany Wilson. Bridgewater opens the 2011 Spring season on February 19 when the team travels to Washington and Lee for a

pair of ODAC contests against the host Generals and Lynchburg College.

Men’s Tennis: Despite having just seven players on the roster, the Bridgewater Eagles men’s tennis team returns an abun-

dance of talent and veteran leadership as the 2011 Spring season approaches. Bridgewater returns five of the top six players from the ladder in 2009-10, but lost its No. 1 singles player and

career singles wins leader, Chris Radke, due to graduation. “It’s definitely tough losing a player who is a solid number one, but this is a situation that we’re accustomed

to, so it doesn’t affect us as much. But everyone will have to bump up a spot, and fill the gaps,” said head coach Conor Smith.

Last season, the Eagles struggled at times in doubles play but generally controlled singles action to roll to a 13-6 record, including a 7-2 mark in the ODAC.

Then-sophomore Brent Floyd was outstanding for the Eagles running his singles record to 21-5 last season, setting a new single season school record in the process. Maryland native Peter Hawkins ran off a string of seven straight wins to open his rookie season.

Bridgewater returns 93 singles wins from a year ago, and brings back a group that is expected to show no fall off from last year’s outstanding season.

“What’s been great is seeing our returners improve year by year. They’ve been lucky, in that they have been getting to play in same position for years in a row, and because of that we had some solid records last year. We struggled last season in doubles and we have to constantly work to fix that, because it’s hard to dig out of a hole after doubles play,” commented Smith.

Aside from the returners, Bridgewater also brings in one new face to the fold this season in Drew Hubble. “Drew came to Bridgewater last year, but didn’t come out as a freshman. He wanted to get everything in order

academically, like a lot of students do, and he’s going to add some depth to our lineup and push guys in the lad-der. We’re glad to have him on the team,” said Smith.

Last season, the Eagles were solidly in the number three spot in the ODAC behind perennial power Washing-ton and Lee and the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney.

This season, Bridgewater was selected to finish third in the conference, behind the Generals and the Tigers, but Smith expects to see continued progress from the squad.

“We expect to hold the line of where we are in the conference,” said Smith. “We need to continue to close the gap with W&L and Hampden-Sydney. We’ve been playing Hampden-Sydney closer and closer each year and we need to continue that upward march.”

Bridgewater opens the season on February 23, when the team travels to King (Tenn.)

Sophomore Peter Hawkins returns to the fray for the Eagles after an outstanding freshman season.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Nationally known riding coach Sarah Irvine – under whose tutelage the Bridgewa-ter College riding program became one of the most respected and competitive in the region – announced today that she will retire at the conclusion of the 2010-11 school year.

“Sarah Irvine has few equals as both a rider and a coach, and Bridgewater College considers itself fortunate to have been able to draw upon her talents for the last 11 years,” said BC President George Cornelius. “Under Sarah’s leadership, the program has steadily grown and prospered, and we are indebted to her for her hard work and professionalism in making that a reality.”

Irvine was the intercollegiate riding coach for Bridgewater’s first team that competed during the 2000-2001 season. During that first season, the Eagles had their first rider, Cary Chenoweth, qualify for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national show. The next year, Chenoweth won the national title in the Intermediate Over Fences division.

Irvine has coached 20 All-ODAC performers including a pair of ODAC Rider of the Year winners – Patti Ann Thornton in 2009 and Lindsay Clark in 2007. She has also coached 10 national show qualifiers while at Bridgewater.

Under Irvine’s coaching, the Eagles won a pair of ODAC championships in 2007 and 2009 and finished second at the conference show four times.

Bridgewater won the regional title in 2006 and finished second in 2004, 2007 and 2008. The current team is in second place in the regional standings following the completion of the fall season.

“The opportunity to work with our students has been personally very rewarding to me,” Irvine said. “I will look back on my years here as some of the best years. I consider it a privilege to have been a part of this won-derful program, and am very proud of what we have established. I am confident it is on a firm footing, and I believe its brightest days are ahead.”

In 2007, Bridgewater College purchased the farm housing the riding program, renaming the facility the Bridgewater College Equestrian Center, with Irvine assuming the director of riding position in addition to con-tinuing her role as intercollegiate riding team head coach.

Irvine is a graduate of the University of Virginia and James Madison Univer-sity. She has served as president and board member of the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association (SWVHJA). Also, Irvine has been inducted into the SWVHJA Hall of Fame.

As a rider, Irvine was awarded the Martini Rossi Rider of the Year honor and has won classes at the Washington Inter-national, the Harrisburg National and Lake Placid Shows.

The College will conduct a national search to identify Irvine’s successor.
