Bernardini’s Stud Fee Doubles For 2012Bernardini, who leads the second-crop sires’ list will stand for $150,000 for the 2012 breeding season. Bernardini’s current top

performers include Stay Thirsty and To Honor and Serve.

Courageous Cat Retired, to Stand For $10,000Grade 1 Winner Courageous Cat has been retired from racing and will stand at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky for a fee

of $10,000. The full brother to After Market most recently came away unplaced in the 2011 TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Gio Ponti Retired to Stand at Castleton LyonsCastleton Lyons homebred Gio Ponti has been retired from the track and will start his career as a stallion at Castleton Lyons in Lexington, Kentucky. The son of Tale of the Cat finished fourth in the 2011 TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile in what was his last start.

Champion Uncle Mo Retired After Disappointing Breeders’ Cup EffortLast year’s 2-year-old champion who finished a disappointing 10th in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic has been retired to Ashford Stud. By Indian Charlie, the colt suffered from multiple health problems earlier this year that ultimately resulted in scratching him from the Kentucky Derby. After intensive treatment, the 3-year-old returned to the track to win the G2 Kelso Handicap. His stud

fee was announced at $35,000.

Workforce Retired, To Stand in JapanWorkforce, winner of both the 2010 G1 Epsom Derby and the 2010 G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been retired from

racing to stand at Shadai Farm in Japan. The Juddmonte Farms homebred, Workforce won the Epsom Derby by seven lengths, the third largest margin in Epsom Derby history, as well as setting a course record of 2:31.33. Workforce, by King’s Best out of Soviet Moon, a Sadlers’ Wells mare finished his career with earnings of $4,930.919.

Kentucky Derby Winner Street Sense Sires First Stakes WinnerStreet Sense, 2006 champion 2-year-old male sired his first stakes winner when Motor City, a 2-year-old gelding won the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs in late October.

Sadlers’ Wells DiesHorse racing lost a great on April 26, when SADLER’S WELLS, leading international sire and MG1SW died of natural causes at

Coolmore Stud in Ireland. The 30-year-old stallion was the leading sire in England as well as Ireland, for a record-breaking run of 13 years in succession. To date, the son of NORTHERN DANCER has sired 323 stakes winners.

THE NAMTOBA JOURNAL 2012 EDITION

Baby Mamma Dramaby Amanda Selby

Using real parents for our model horses keeps our club and hobby realistic, and provides countless hours of

entertaining research and reading. However, without the right type of research and accurate sources, a model

breeder could end up with the wrong Baby Mama (to borrow the title from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler); that is,

a mare that was unable to actually produce a foal for the year chosen for a variety of reasons. In this article, I

will explain the process I’ve used for at least the last few years in NAMTOBA to identify, develop, research and

finally request the use of real mares for my model herd. I will also briefly explain the role of real sires in my

own breeding program, and what resources are available for stallion selection as well.

Common Real Mare UsesThere are a few common reasons for desiring a real mare as a parent. A breeder might wish to introduce a

particular female family or bloodline into their herd that a given mare provides. In some cases, breeding an

older broodmare and adding her younger daughters to the herd can accomplish this purpose. Another popular

use is to create full or half-siblings to popular real horses. Many times, a breeder might do this for a stallion or

mare that died early in their breeding career, or because they desire a full sibling to a favorite horse. Recently,

many breeders use the dams of champions or stakes-producers to help prove their young model stallions. I have

used all of these reasons for incorporating particular real horses into my own herd and each have been

successful for me in different ways. Before plunging into the research required to use a real mare responsibly, a

breeder must first identify the goal of creating the new model.

Identifying the GoalFor the purpose of this article, I will discuss the German female family I recently created to supplement my

herd. The goal of creating the new family was to provide an outcross to my existing band of mares and three

stallions, especially my eldest sire, Daven. Most of my German herd is heavily inbred to familiar names like

NECKAR, TINCINO, ORSINI and their sons/daughters and other offspring. My hope was to create an older

mare that could have breeding age daughters young enough to put young racers on the track this year. With

this goal in mind, I began to look at pedigrees of top German thoroughbreds and identified mares or sires with

names that looked unfamiliar. German female families are easier to identify, in many cases, because all the foals

carry the same first letter. Already having mares from families beginning with D, K, N, L, T and U, and

stallions from A, D and W, I looked for other prolific families. I also knew that other members of NAMTOBA

had stallions with names beginning with L, T and A (Let’s Rumble, Tetter and Absolut, to name a few), so I

wanted a family that would also be useful to other members.

The Searching ProcessIn my musings and pedigree reading, I found O to be a prolific letter. Not wanting my family to be too

closely related to ORSINI, I selected another branch of the O family that was a little less-known, but

identifiable with real members into the 1970s and 1980s. I used Pedigree Query to view pedigrees and compare

ages, siblings and limited produce records until I narrowed down a particular female line that I wanted. One of

my pet projects (inspired by Jeannine and other NAMTOBA members, and to be discussed in another

NAMTOBA Journal) is to breed horses that are PHAROS free. I thus eliminated all mares with lines to this

stallion, and when I looked at any daughters listed on PQ, I eliminated those with lines to PHAROS as well. I

also wanted to breed as young a mare as possible, but given my pedigree preferences, I finally settled on a mare

born in the late 1960s, to be out of a mare called OSTERWUNDER. I then began a search for a suitable sire.

Again, I used records of the stallions bred to siblings of OSTERWUNDER, and even to her and her

recorded offspring. I limited my search to sires that would have been able to produce foals in the 1960s, and

that were free of PHAROS lines. Once I settled on a sire, OBERMAAT, I needed to confirm that

OSTERWUNDER had an open year that I could use legitimately.

Finding and Verifying an Open YearIn order to keep our club legitimate and to adhere to real-life rules that only allow one registered foal per

thoroughbred mare each year, there are restrictions on registering foals from real mares. The complete set of

rules is available on the website, but basically years from open mares may only be used if the mare’s foal died

(before becoming a runner or noted producer, etc), if the mare aborted or if she was barren. If one of these

conditions is true for the mare, the member must also find proof that she was back in foal the next year (or even

perhaps the year following). This is to make sure that the mare was alive long enough to have carried the foal to

full term, and foaled successfully. Thus, if one wanted to create a foal from BETTER THAN HONOUR for

2010, that member would need to find proof that BETTER THAN HONOUR did not produce a foal in 2010,

but that she is back in foal for 2011. I will discuss the ways one could prove this below.

Pedigree Query is a useful tour only for general inquiries and background information. It is not known to

be 100% accurate, especially since anyone can edit or alter the information. If PQ lists a mare as not foaling

for a particular year, the member must validate it with another source. The most reliable and useful site that I

use is the Breeder’s Cup Nomination Verification Site. This site is linked to major thoroughbred registries, so it

is updated regularly and is reliable. Generally, it’s most helpful for US or European horses, but I’ve also had

pretty good success looking up South American, Australian and Japanese horses as well. There are many good

suggestions for research sites listed on the NAMTOBA website that I suggest everyone reference.

When researching OSTERWUNDER, I had originally found limited records on PQ. The BC Nominations

site was also less helpful, as the Germans are not as tech-forward with their studbooks as other organizations

have been. My next step was to use Equineline, and the $1 basic foal report feature. Much more reliable and

official, I used this report when I submitted my request to Jeannine for approval.

Submitting a RequestWhen submitting a real mare request, it is important to provide this “proof ” to Jeannine, although not

nearly in the detail that I just described. When I was doing my research, I did ask Jeannine for additional

insight and resources, but I still submitted the request using the format on the website and adding an additional

footnote with relevant information. For any real mare request, your total request might look like this:

Ophelia (GER)

1967 Black Thoroughbred Mare

OBERMAAT x OSTERWUNDER, WAHNFRIED

PQ List foals as (insert dates), BC Nominations page only verified 1 foal, Equineline report validated these

foals (names, dates). I would also attach the PDF form of the report as well.

A breeder should also provide a brief pedigree of both sire and dam so that if there are multiple horses

with the same name, it is easy to find/verify the correct parents.

By submitting the report in this fashion, Jeannine can easily see that I’ve done my homework, and where

I’ve looked for information. It also makes it easier to check my research for accuracy. I will also wait until I

have initial approval for the “foundation mare” to register any broodmare daughters or racers, even if I’ve

already created them for my own personal files. This way, if there are problems with my research, there are

fewer things to correct. Furthermore, it’s less information for Jeannine to scan through when she’s logging my

new horse.

It important to recognize that Jeannine checks each request to use a real mare for accuracy before she

approves it. Therefore, the easier we make our information for Jeannine to read and verify, the sooner we can

add our new identities to our herds!

Real StallionsThe same rules apply to using real stallions, but given that stallions sire multiple foals each year, their crop

dates are easier to validate. PQ is likely to be more accurate in this, and using something like the Stallion

Register on the Bloodhorse or Google can take you right to that horse’s page if he’s currently alive. Again, it is

important to make sure that both stallion and mare are in the same country or geographic region that it would

be realistic to breed them together.

ConclusionA final observation-each member has their own strategy for researching real parents, and different goals for their

breeding program. Likewise, each member should develop a strategy or pattern that works best for them when

doing pedigree research. I happen to enjoy searching through pedigrees for hours in the hope of landing on a just

the right horse at some point. Other members may prefer to a popular sire, and begin with his offspring as a

starting point. Still others might look for a family of a particular broodmare. There are a million different

starting points, and I encourage everyone (especially new members) to take time to develop their own style. I also

did quite a bit of research for my graduate program, so poking around the internet is weirdly like therapy to me.

I also suggest asking for help when looking for a particular type of parent. I’ve emailed with Jeannine about more

than one real parent quest of mine, and she was a great help in developing Ophelia as well!

In a future issue, I will write about my foray into PHAROS free horses, and what the significance of that is for my

herd and Thoroughbreds in general.
