SPRING 2013 CReatIve WRItING CouRSeSFICtIoN

Foundations of Fiction with Megan Davidson.Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30. 8 weeks, starting May 1.Designed to help the new writer develop skills for successful fiction, this class will offer selected read-ings, writing prompts, and class discussion to identify both strengths and weaknesses in your own writing, and methods to fix the flaws. Required text: Self-Ed-iting for Fiction Writers, by Browne and King. The Writer’s Life II with Chris DelGuercio. Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30. 8 weeks, starting April 23.Building on last season’s course “The Writer’s Life,” this class will focus on the value of a supportive workshop environment and peer critique. We’ll work to improve our own work, and to strengthen our abil-ity to discern good writing through critical reading.

Novel Boot Camp with Megan Davidson. Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00. 8 weeks, starting April 30.Half the “battle” in writing a novel is applying the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair. That’s what we’ll be doing in this workshop, critiquing as many chapters of your novel as we can over the course of the class. No revisions! Our goal: 50-100 reviewed pages by the end of class. Boo-yah!

DWC PRO Fiction Workshop with Megan Da-vidson. Thurs., 6:00-8:30. 8 weeks, starting April 25. This workshop is for experienced writers whose goal is publication, with the focus on strong peer critique. Very limited space is available for advanced students not enrolled in DWC PRO. Foundations of Creative Non-Fiction with Linda Lowen. Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30. 8 weeks, starting April 24. Creative non-fiction is the art of telling true stories every bit as captivating as fiction. From memoir and personal essays to articles and immersion writing, we’ll learn the basics by reading (a lot) and writing (a little). Required text: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up, by Lee Gutkind.

Voice in Creative Non-Fiction with Yvonne Murphy. Mon., 7:15-8:45. 8 weeks, starting April 22. A prose writer’s voice becomes what readers hear in their minds, a signature, recognizable through lan-guage, structure, and turn of phrase. In this class, writers will explore the use and development of voice in creative non-fiction. Students will also complete assignments based on craft discussions and models in our required text, Inventing the Truth: The Art & Craft of Memoir, edited by William Zinsser.

DWC PRO Non-Fiction Workshop with Rebecca Sernett. Wednesdays, 6:00-8:30.8 weeks, starting April 24. The Lyric Essay with KC Wolfe.Tues., 6:00-7:30. 8 weeks, starting April 23.This DWC PRO craft course for fiction and non-fiction students will guide writers in both genres to ways to engage readers through lyri-cal language in their prose. How does the essay sing to the ear, please the imagistic sense of the reader, and satisfy the author with creative expression will all be critical questions to an-swer. Advanced poets also welcome.

DRaMatIC WRItING

Introduction to Playwriting with Peter Moller. Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00. 8 weeks, start-ing April 23. This course is for those relatively new to writing scripts for the stage. Dramatic structure, characters, dialogue, and the script format will be our emphasis. Each student will produce a complete draft of a short play. Note: this class is not suitable for screenplay writing.

DRaMatIC WRItING

Songwriters Workshop II with Jane Zell. Thursdays, 6:00-8:00. 8 weeks, starting April 25. A sequel to the winter workshop and open to new songsters, this course will contin-ue the quest to identify the elements of a great and memorable song. By the shared experience of methods, tips, and tools of the songwriting trade, participants will create, revise, and per-form in a co-creative, supportive environment.

Storytelling through Multimedia II with Amanda Wada. Thursdays, 6:30-8:30. 8 weeks, starting April 25. The saga continues! We’ll explore the value of digital image and sound in conveying stories, using simple tools available on line, on our phones, cameras, and computers. Basic computer skills are neces-sary, as well as a digital camera with USB data transfer OR smart phone with email and cam-era capacities.

Begin at the Beginning: Foundations of Poetry with Yvonne Murphy. Mondays, 5:30-7:00. 8 weeks, starting April 22.In this class, new (and new-ish) poets will investigate diverse poetry models in order to elevate their own writing practice and craft. Students will become familiar with the con-ventions and styles of poetry and will write a minimum of four new, original poems. Re-quired text: Mary Oliver’s A Poetry Handbook.

Poetry and the Editor’s Eyewith Georgia Popoff. Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00.8 weeks, starting April 24.The next in Georgia’s series of craft/workshop courses, this class will focus on the revision process, with the goal of publication. What do editors look for, and what do they avoid, will be our key questions. Required text: Richard Hugo’s The Triggering Town. Look Who’s Talking: Point of View in Poetry with Philip Memmer. Thursdays,6:00-7:30. 8 weeks, starting April 25.In this DWC PRO craft course, we will examine the wide variety of narrative and rhetorical strategies available to poets, and explore the benefits and pitfalls of each, using both writ-ing exercises and the work of terrific poets from the canon and our current moment.

DWC PRO Poetry Workshop with Georgia Popoff. Mondays, 6:00-8:30. 8 weeks, starting April 22.This workshop is for experienced writers whose goal is publication, with the focus on strong peer critique. TEENS and TWEENS:Find Your Voice in

the YOUNG AUTHORS ACADEMY

Spring Session Begins April 13th

We’ve changed the time of the YAA, to make it more possible for our writers to participate in other activities. We will now meet on Saturdays, from 12:30-2:00 p.m., for 8 weeks beginning April 13th. We will continue the weekly writing prompts and activities for poets and fiction writers. This session, there will be workshopping and revision exercises with the goal of producing work suitable for publi-cation in literary journals that include or specifically serve young writers. In addition, we will feature a section for those teen writers with full-length manuscript projects who are inspired to work on revision and preparation for the publishing market. Join us! DWC members and YMCA members may begin registering for classes upon receiving this brochure in either print or elec-tronic form. Non-members may register for classes beginning April 1. Early registration is strongly recommended for all courses. Please understand that we do not call to confirm registrations; we will, however, call you if there is any problem or cancellation.
