THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ACROSS THE AREA people reach out in many ways to help FWCC’s patients and their caregiverswho are frequently here for long hours while they receive chemo. Many travel for hours from Lake Charles, Alexandria, Monroe or Tallulah to meet these appointments. The House of Restoration Church in Shreve- port has adopted FWCC. Its members donate gift baskets filled with snacks, puzzlebooks, and other items that are given to patients as they wait. Woodridge Baptist Church members sew felt caps and trach covers. The Cancer Awareness Ministry at Grawood Baptist Church provides seatbelt cushions that protect cancer patients’ ports from the strain of seat belts while they are riding in cars. Several ladies provide knitted or crocheted caps. These are often in bright fun colors or perhaps the colors of a favorite sports team. Patients are able to choose one to suit their fancy. It’s a small cheerful item that just makes a patient smile for a moment. The LSU Health Women’s Club provides blankets that patients take home. Wonderful blankets also come from the First Church of the Nazarene. Pony Express Charities was started by John Carrigan to provide transportation assistance and lunch for patients and care givers. Feist-Weiller accepts cash donations to provide transporation assistance. This is in addition to the American Cancer Society assistance with gas cards and lodging. The Shreveport Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Breast Cancer Relief Foundation both provide transportation assistance for breast cancer patients. Feist-Weiller has a long established fund to purchase pain medications for cancer patients who have no other resources. The Mellanea and Max Rosenbloom Fund for Pain Medications is a particular favorite designation for donors who want to make life easier for cancer patients. FWCC’s library has both paperback and hard- back books of general reading material. Patients can take the books home if they like and do not have to worry about returning it. The library also features extensive materials on cancer treatments and drugs for those who want to have a greater understanding of their disease. IT’S EASY TO DONATE. You don’t even have to park. Just drive up under the front overhang and give the valet a box of books or a craft project like the caps or blankets. If you want to make a financial contribution to any of these projects, simply visit www.feistweiller.org and fill out the donation form. SPRING 2013 ADVOCATE FOR US AND FOR CANCER PATIENTS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ACROSS THE AREApeople reach out in many ways to helpFWCC’s patients and their caregiverswho arefrequently here for long hours while they receive chemo. Many travel for hours fromLake Charles, Alexandria, Monroe or Tallulahto meet these appointments.

The House of Restoration Church in Shreve-port has adopted FWCC. Its members donategift baskets filled with snacks, puzzlebooks, and other items that are given to patients asthey wait.

Woodridge Baptist Church members sew feltcaps and trach covers. The Cancer AwarenessMinistry at Grawood Baptist Church providesseatbelt cushions that protect cancerpatients’ ports from the strain of seat beltswhile they are riding in cars.

Several ladies provide knitted or crochetedcaps. These are often in bright fun colors orperhaps the colors of a favorite sports team.Patients are able to choose one to suit theirfancy. It’s a small cheerful item that just makesa patient smile for a moment. The LSUHealth Women’s Club provides blankets thatpatients take home. Art LSU Health Shreveport and the Feist-Weiller CancerCenter are OPEN FOR BUSINESS…and we are hereto stay!“Have you heard that LSU Health Shreveport is closing?” Friends andFeist-Weiller Cancer Center supporters are concerned and I hearcomments like this frequently.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

We are not closing. It is true we are going through a transition stage. Butwe continue to provide top-notch patient care and will continue to doso in the future. Our mission to provide the highest quality cancer care, cancer education and cutting edge cancer research will remain un-changed. We continue to need your support as we grow and expand.

As the Director of the FWCC I want to stress to all of our supporters thatyour donations and gifts to the center will remain safe and will go tosupport the mission of our center or to whatever program of the FWCCyou have designated. All of your donations are held in trust for us bythe LSU Health Shreveport Foundation and will only be used to supportthe mission of the FWCC.

We are going through a transition at LSU Health Shreveport. The man-agement of our hospital and the outpatient services will be contractedto a not for profit organization. Our new partner will lease this space andmanage these patient care services for us. The LSUS Medical Schooland University programs will remain intact. This public/private partner-ship will enhance our ability to deliver the best health care to our regionand the entire state. The new partnership will allow us to be moreresponsive to the changing demands of the economy and health caremarketplace in today’s challenging times. I believe that ultimately thisjoint venture will allow us to flourish and grow stronger once ourclinical activities are free from state oversight.

The FWCC will continue to offer new innovative cancer research andcare programs such as our Integrative Oncology initiative and theestablishment of a Cancer Genome research center. And ourresearchers will continue the battle to investigate and eradicate cancer.Your help in maintaining these research functions is crucial.

Thank you for all you have done for the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Ifyou have any questions or concerns I would love the opportunity totalk in person or on the phone with you. Please call me.

Would you like to paint…or maybe makejewelry? Feist-Weiller’s patients have beenbusy doing both.

Grants from both the Junior League ofShreveport-Bossier and Target are funding acollection of 26 letters of the alphabet. Eachletter will be matched with a word with amedical association: ”T” is for thermometer,“C” is for Cast. These are being painted bychildren in the LSU Children’s Hospital andwill hang on a long hallway used by youngpatients on their way to treatments andprocedures.

Meanwhile, FWCC adult patients have com-pleted ten delightful commissions includingan airplane, tractor, and boys in a tree. Aseries of locally significant buildings hasbegun with the Robinson Film Center whichhas been completed and is hanging therenow. The Municipal Auditorium is in theworks. Washer necklaces with buttons arethe order of the day on Wednesday whenthe ”Jewelry Ladies” are on the floor.

Patients, caregivers, doctors, nurses, childrenand adults, even KLSA news personalitiespainted birds for FWCC’s entry in the Sam’sTown Casino Tree of Hope competition. Wewon second place and $2,500.

The AIM Program was featured in theNovember-December 2012 issue of theAssociation of Community Cancer Center’s(ACCC) magazine. As a result of this wehave had several inquires on how to start aprogram.
