At South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony, we value education and recognize the importance of the arts as a key to learning and preparedness in school, the workplace and everyday life.

The arts are a direct channel to creativity and innovation. Classrooms and workplaces of yesterday are

much different than those of today. Now there is a growing awareness of the value of integrating the arts into these environments. The arts facilitate and develop strong critical thinking skills, as well as math and language skills, both vital to further success in education and the workplace.

The South Shore Arts everykid program provides literacy-based art programs in elementary schools, including the underserved. South Shore Arts also provides a number of opportunities for arts enrichment and development for classroom teachers, including an Arts Education Resource Fair that features professional development training.

The Symphony provides unique education experiences that open a new world for students of all ages, fostering a life-long love for music that benefits students beyond the development of strictly musical skills, including reading, arithmetic, the IQ, and social and personal skills.

With the strong push of STEM education (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) in American schools, the arts offer a natural relationship to the sciences. Educational institutions are taking steps to strengthen that relationship.

Several studies show that support for the arts is a leading tool in preparing students for success and later in life. Per the Arts Education Partnership’s (AEP) research brief Preparing Students for the Next America, there is

a direct benefit of integrating arts into the classroom, workplace and in life. The brief speaks specifically to students’ improvement and motivation in the language arts and mathematics.

On reading, the AEP states, “When the arts are integrated with literacy instruction, all students benefit, especially English Language Learners and students from low income backgrounds.”

On math: “Arts integrated math instruction also facilitates mastery of computation and estimation skills, and challenging concepts like fractions.”

The Arts: Educating the Future

Page 5: Spring 2014 Convergence Magazine

Traditionally “non-art” fields are now actively encouraging creativity in the workplace due to the inventiveness and innovation directly linked to the arts. Creativity allows and encourages productivity in schools, business, and industry.

South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony continue to lead by developing new programs to correlate with our interconnected, global society and creating new regional partnerships to further enrich the communities that we serve. South Shore Arts and the Symphony are proud to partner with our vibrant and diverse communities. Art and education unite us all.

South Shore Arts celebrates a milestone this year with the 40th Annual Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition. Always a highlight of the spring season, this exhibit features student artists from Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in Indiana, and south suburban Cook County in Illinois. Artwork created by 6th through 12th grade students is displayed by school art teachers in a single comprehensive show, and the awards ceremony is typically a standing-room-only event!

This yearly exhibit has enabled South Shore Arts to recognize excellence in the artistic achievements of young artists and the teachers who nurture and inspire them. It all began in 1974 under board president Anne Beckman, when the “Tri-County” title stood for Lake, Porter and Cook counties. Beginning in 2007, the boundary was expanded to include schools from Indiana’s LaPorte County as well. As participation and popularity grew, so did the grades that were eligible. In 1995, during the 20th Annual Tri-County Exhibit, 7th and 8th graders were included, followed by the addition of 6th graders in 2008.

The jurying process begins at the school level where participating teachers are asked to select the best work produced by their students. They are then invited to install their students’ work in the South Shore Arts gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts.

Thanks to the ongoing support of many generous patrons and sponsors, more than $6,000 in awards were presented in 2013. Every year since the mid-1990s, the prestigious Donald H. Berwanger Scholarship has been awarded to a graduating high school senior who plans to attend a college or university for the purpose of studying art. The award was established through a bequest of the late Don Berwanger, a high school art teacher in Chicago’s south suburbs.

The 2009 winner, Christian Lorenzo of Homewood-Flossmoor High School, currently attends the Maryland Institute College of Art, and the 2011 winner, Yekaterina Komarovskaya of Munster High School, attends the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis.

In addition to the awards for individual students, trophies are presented for the best overall school display on both the junior and senior high school levels. For the past several years, South Shore Arts has invited participating school art teachers and their guests to a special private preview party held after work on the Friday prior to the annual Sunday afternoon awards ceremony. This new tradition has created an opportunity for teachers to meet, network and share ideas.

The 40th Annual Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition will run April 27th though May 25, 2014, with an awards reception held on Sunday, May 4th, from 1-3pm. To receive more information regarding submissions of student artwork and participation in this event, please contact Laura Cutler, Director of Exhibitions, at 219/836-1839, ext. 108 or [email protected].

South Shore Arts is pleased to present Fenders & Figures: Works by Sandi Kozlowski in the Atrium of the Center for Visual and Performing Arts through March 2, 2014. Sandi has recently been pushing the boundaries of her multimedia pieces by adding a third dimension. As a motorcycle owner and enthusiast, she has intertwined her passions for both art-making and motorcycle riding.

“I have been fascinated with the reflective parts and details that the machine offers. In the beginning, the canvases were flat acrylic paintings, which put the emphasis on the fine details of the machinery. As my work evolved, plastic molds of motorcycle parts were added.

“I consider my work to be abstract-surrealism,” Sandi says. “A concept is in place before I begin with a representation of a single object or particular thought. I find that with the addition of various media and objects, I can pull these ideas together into a working relationship.”

A long-time South Shore Arts board member and current VP of Exhibits, Sandi has been exhibiting in Northwest Indiana and Chicago for over 25 years. She received her BFA from Calumet College and worked with George Schneider and Bob Anderson at the Art Institute of Chicago. Recent study of airbrush techniques with Phil Coduti and Terry Jasinski has further developed her work. Sandi lives and works in Munster, Indiana.

Join Sandi and her friends at a closing reception on Sunday, March 2, from 1-3pm!

It was a milestone this year as South Shore Arts Executive Director John Cain celebrated his 20th Annual Holiday Reading and 20 years as Executive Director of South Shore Arts. From the beginning, John’s reading has been a must-do holiday tradition. Twenty years ago, the first reading was Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory,” and this year’s reading again featured a Capote short story, “A Jug of Silver” from 1945. Many guests by show of hands had proudly attended all 20 years!

This year’s holiday reading was attended by over 350 guests on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. The day began with wine in the gallery followed by lunch and the reading. Board President Michael Luongo presented John with a canvas print commemorating all 20 titles of past readings, and the TIMES featured him on the front cover of its new lifestyle section called Prime. As expected, John never disappoints, always filling the room with laughter and good cheer.

Special thanks to our sponsors Vanis Salon & Day Spa and Community Healthcare System, as well as raffle contributors Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, Strack & Van Til, El Taco Real, It’s Just Serendipity, Downtown Hammond Council, Indiana Ballet Theatre and Rosemary’s Heritage Flowers.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 18, 2014, for John’s 21st Annual Holiday Reading!

The 25th Festival of Trees luncheon sponsored by the Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Sym-phony Society (WANISS) was held at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts on Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Over 400 guests shared the holiday spirit and celebrated 25 years of WANISS support for the Symphony, its Youth Orchestra, Chorus and education programs.

Festivities began with attendees admiring the 25 trees decorated by businesses and civic groups while being serenaded by traditional carolers. Guests enjoyed the wassail bowl and visited the Boulevard of Shoppes. Munster Garden Club was the top winner with “Gifts from the Garden,” while Dixon’s Florist placed second with “Over the River and through the Woods.” The Dyer Historical Society earned third place with “Rooted in the Past.”

After lunch, WANISS Board President Charlotte Strowhorn recognized past board presidents and former Trees chairmen, including Marcia Glaros who started it all 25 years ago. Charlotte then introduced this year’s chair, Christine Small, who thanked the board and committee members for a job well done.

Kara Bershad, principal harpist with the North-west Indiana Symphony and professor of harp at North Park University and the Moody Bible Institute in Chi-cago, performed beautifully for the group, opening with holiday favorite “Silver Bells” and concluding with a special salute to the 25th anniversary of the Festival of Trees luncheon.
