7:30 P.M., BARRUS CONCERT HALL

The Bells on Temple Square, a handbell choir of 30 musicians, will perform its first concert at BYU-Idaho. The ensemble enhances the concerts and recordings of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and performs two handbell concerts in the Salt Lake Tabernacle each year. After years of borrowing handbells to provide the distinctive complement to its music, in 2005 the Tabernacle Choir organized an official handbell choir after receiving a donation of a 7-octave set of English handbells, a 6 1/2-octave set of handbells, and two 6-octave sets of hand chimes.

Theatre

Clever Jack and the PiratesJUNE 3-6, 9-13, 7:30 P.M.

SNOW BLACK BOX THEATER

This delightful retelling of the Bremen town musicians, first produced with the BYU-Idaho children’s theatre Tellers and Troubadours, is the story of Clever Jack, a poor country lad who has fallen in love with Sari, the daughter of a well-to-do farmer, Mr. Farmer. But true love never did run smoothly because Willard, a pig (we mean it, a real pig) has convinced Mr. Farmer to deny Jack and Sari’s love until Jack can steal the gold of the pirates who live near Bremen town. Well, Jack is up to the task and sets off to make his fortune and win his love. On the way he meets four animals, all banished from Mr. Farmer’s farm due to the evil influence of Willard. Jack invites the animals to join him on his quest and off they go. Little does the traveling band know (get it, traveling band) that Willard intends to thwart them. But what Willard doesn’t know is that Sari has her own plan afoot. A story filled with music, romance, pirates, mistaken identities and a real pig, Clever Jack and the Pirates will delight audiences of all ages. Written and composed by BYU-Idaho Theatre and Dance Department’s award-winning playwright and composer, J. Omar Hansen.

CatsJULY 1-2, 7-10, 7:30 P.M.

SNOW DRAMA THEATER

This whimsical and fanciful musical has had almost more lives than one can count! (The original London production ran for 21 years and the Broadway production ran for 18 years.) It is the third longest-running show in Broadway history. Productions of these songs and dances have been presented around the world many times since it debuted 34 years ago; it has been translated into over 20 languages. The magical story introduces a community of cats called the Jellicles who live at one corner of a trash dump. It enacts the night they make the “Jellicle Choice” that decides which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The show features a dozen musical vignettes and dances which celebrate various characters in that community. The spine-tingling songs are as catchy as fleas–their melodies cling to the ear. Lively, acrobatic dances turn, twist, bend and stretch the cats and kitties in delightful celebration. Join us for a simply amazing spectacle, spectacular adventuresome fantasy, and fantastic family fun!
