A number of UAA’s track and field team members traveled to San Diego to compete at the Triton Invita-tional on Friday and Saturday. The Seawolves mainly competed in jumping and sprinting events at the two-day meet that featured over 1,500 athletes in all.

Starring for the Green and Gold was junior Jamie

Ashcroft, who eclipsed her own UAA record in the 200-meter sprint by just .01 seconds, crossing the finish line with a time of 24.07 setting a new UAA record for the women’s 200-meter. Ashcroft’s pace currently ranks 12th in Division II so far this season, and is also the second-fastest time in Great Northwest Athletic Confer-ence history.

Another Seawolf standout was Tamara Perez from Hendaye, France. The sophomore upgraded her pro-visional NCAA qualifying time in the 800-meters, by

posting a time of 2:10.74. Her rate is the fastest at UAA this season, and is actually the fourth best time in school history. Perez’s time is good for 13th in the NCAA at this point in the season. Other notable performances include Hayley Bezanson, who finished the 400-meter race with a time of 57.92, and Alexia Blalock who finished in the top-10 in the triple jump, leaping 11.15 meters.

Tevin Gladden jumped six feet, nine inches, or 2.06 meters, nearly breaking the 10-year-old UAA record and placing fourth in the event that featured athletes from University of California Los Angeles and University of California San Diego. Now tied for 21st in the NCAA this season, Gladden’s mark is the second best in school history, and fourth all-time in the GNAC.

The men’s 4x400 teams shined once again this week-end. The “A” team finished in 2nd place in the event, posting a time of 3:20.9, while the “B” team was right behind them for third. Darrion Gray placed 14th out of 34 in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 10.88 in an event dominated by athletes from Brazil.

There were multiple top-10 finishes in at the invita-tional in San Diego as well. Liam Lindsay ended the 400-meter in ninth place, while teammate Nicholas Tay-lor finished sixth in the same event, posting a time of 48.56 seconds. A particular distance runner saw success as well. Nathan Kipchumba placed fifth in the men’s 800-meter, finishing with a time of 1:50.68.

Recruiting challenges for UAA hockeyThe game of hockey was originally

played in the Canadian winter on frozen lakes and ponds. Ever since its develop-ment, the game of hockey has been asso-ciated as a winter sport. While it may be a winter sport to spectators, its an all year round commitment for players and coaches alike.

UAA’s hockey coaches are no excep-tion. Just because the hockey season ends in March doesn’t mean the planning for a WCHA Division I mens ice hockey team does as well. Every year, unlike pro teams or semi pro teams, college lev-el programs are dealt the card of filling the roles of graduate athletes. This year alone, UAA hockey is losing four senior athletes, including the 2015-16 season point leader, Blake Tatchell.

With the challenges of recruiting play-ers every year weighing on the coaches of UAA, having a losing record only increases the difficulty to compete with top tier division I programs. The Sea-wolves stayed competitive at the begin-ning of the season but encountered an injury ridden second half that left three of their starters sidelined. This resulted in the fall to the last place spot in the WCHA for the second straight year.

“Minnesota, Boston and Michigan. Teams like those guys have top level high school programs they can watch every weekend, a lot of Alaskan kids are leav-ing to play in other places,” Assistant

Coach Josh Ciocco said. “We would love to have a player pool in town to watch, but its not something that’s offered right now.”

These challenges force the coaches to recruit year round, even on their trips during their hockey season. Due to the expenses to travel from Alaska and watch potential prospects play, UAA often uses the team travel to see as many of the pros-pects as they can. The team has to send Ciocco or assistant coach Louis Mass to attend junior or high school games in nearby areas of travel in order to seek future talent.

The team uses their scholarships to entice players to the team and to improve. 18 full scholarships are offered by the school to distribute between the hockey teams roster that will typically consist of around 20-30 athletes. The scholarships are awarded between the players based on multiple different facets of their games such as play making ability, competitive-ness, and leadership. As the players con-tinue to develop whether on ice or off ice, they are again rewarded by the program with additional scholarship benefits in an attempt to keep the players competitive on the ice and in the classrooms.

“A good example of that is Austin Sevalrud, our captain, I’m pretty sure he entered the team on a walk on with mini-mal scholarship numbers, and he’s grad-uating this year with a full scholarship,” Ciocco said.

A lot of the scouting done by UAA consists of watching live games online

and reviewing stat sheets on sites like hockeydb.com and eliteprospects.com. The need for this is a result of a shallow hockey market in Anchorage. The coach-es will frequently watch players on live feeds of games, where they will deter-mine whether or not the player is worth follow up.

In addition to scouting online, head coach Matt Thomas heavily relies on relationships he has made through his previous playing and coaching career, Thomas uses these contacts and trusted hockey minds to give insight into poten-tial prospects he may have never heard about otherwise.

“Its a special thing about the game, everyone is always looking to help the development of players,” Thomas said.

Thomas also makes sure he gives Alaskan players that have the ability to be difference makers on the team a look from UAA recruiters. He also touched on the difficulty of chasing Alaskan players outside of Anchorage’s hockey market in order to give the players the adequate opportunity they may deserve.

“We understand that this is an afford-able team for Alaskans, we try and get them the looks, we follow them playing outside, but its easier for teams in areas they play in to recruit them,” Thomas said.

Staying competitive in the league has been challenging for UAA as of late, but the teams’ coaches are constantly staying busy in an attempt to get back into the standings. The types of players that UAA

targets aren’t all goal scorers.“I don’t go out and search for the

next Gretzky, we look for what the team needs,” Thomas said. “We’re lucky to have a guy like Josh. He’s the best at what he does.”

Last year’s addition of Mass, who grew up in Anchorage’s market under-stands the pull to leave Anchorage in search of better hockey. Mass was brought in by Thomas who stated that Mass’ knowledge of the town and in state hockey relationships are important to the future development of the program. Mass played college hockey at Bowling Green, a competitive team within UAA’s divi-sion. He was also a player and an assis-tant coach for the Alaska Aces, the only professional hockey team in Alaska.

“I understand the draw to outside teams, I did it, but adding the hometown element makes it sentimental,” Mass said.

UAA currently stretches their con-nections for players as far as Europe in search of the next batch of Seawolf hopefuls. Leagues such as the USHL, BCHL, NAHL and SPHL junior hockey leagues make up the majority of Divi-sion I hopefuls. UAA is growing out of the program’s rebuilding era and hopes to achieve added success like the first half of last season in the next two years. All three coaches agreed that their freshman and sophomore group landed high in pro-duction in comparison to other WCHA teams younger groups in the 2015-16 sea-son, giving them hope for the future.

be continuing my hockey career. I am not too sure on specifics as for where I will be playing next year. Somewhere in North America, just not sure what league or team yet.”

Career: “I would be interested in starting in the marketing department. I do not know necessarily what field, if it would be sales or some sort of statistics, or whatever the case may be. Then when my resume gets built, I will make my way towards the management side of things. In saying that, it could go either way too, you never know what opportunities may come up in business. It would be nice to stay involved in sports somehow. Wheth-er that be on the marketing or manage-ment side of a team or organization.”

Location: “I will probably come back to Saskatchewan when I’m done with my hockey career. I really enjoy the city I am from [North Battleford].”

for a week, hopefully two, and do as much skiing in backcountry as possible while it is still available. I will then continue to job hunt and talk to prospective employ-ers back home in Calgary. I am looking at the option of doing some work around here in Alaska as well.”

Career: “I am not sure exactly at the moment, but probably working some-thing in data analysis, possible in the finance industry. I want to do something that excites me, keeps me working and keeps me learning.”

Location: “Short term, I will definite-ly go to Calgary, but long term, I am not sure where I want to live or work.”

Immediate Plans: “I am going to stay in Anchorage and work possibly at the airport, but right now I am a secretary for a car rental company. During that I will be training to possibly play basketball overseas.”

Career: “I have been thinking about going to graduate school at either UAA or back home in Las Vegas for a degree in public administration or public health, so I can be involved in health in someway because it is interesting to me. Growing up I have always been involved in Special Olympic programs, and I fell in love with it. A dream job would be to go somewhere where Special Olympics are not as promi-nent as it is here and create a program for individuals with special needs to always have access to sports.”

Location: “I am not quite sure where I want to live. I have always said I want to be somewhere that I never have been, so maybe somewhere in the south, but I might start here in the city of Anchorage. Ideally I want to end up somewhere on the other side of the world.”

Women’s BasketballHealth Science

B r i a n M c G i l l Immediate Plans: “I will sign with

an agent and I am going to attempt to play professional basketball somewhere in Europe for the next year or two, most likely in Spain or Germany. I am doing it more for the experience, I am not ready to start real life yet. I plan on getting my master’s and pursing a career in physical therapy or as a strength and condition-ing coach. It can go one or two ways, if I decide to do physical therapy, I will have to go to school and pay for it. But if I go the strength and conditioning route, I would be able to be a graduate assis-tant coach at a school. They pay for your school while you’re there in return for helping out. I have a really good men-tor who is a strength and conditioning coach at Liberty University in Virginia, so hopefully I will get the opportunity to connect and work with him out there.”

Career: “My dream job, when I real-ized I won’t make a living from playing basketball, is to work with professional athletes, so that is how I went down the physical therapy route. I am really fasci-nated by the body, how it moves, how it works and how to maximize its poten-tial, so I really want to work with ath-letes.”

Location: “I am a huge west coast guy, so ultimately I would hope to settle down in the Pacific Northwest.”

Alaska for a few weeks, and then I am going on a road trip with my sister this summer before I have to head back home.”

Career: “I am going to get a mas-ter’s degree at university in Switzer-land. I would like to work in a hotel maybe, or travel agency. I am not 100 percent sure yet.”

Location: “I plan to live in Switzer-land. It would be fun to live somewhere else, but it would be nice to be home.”

Immediate Plans: “I am going to look for work at home in Calgary in the finance sector if I can.”

Career: “I want to be on the research side of things, at an investment bank or an investment house. I think down the road I will pursue law school.”

Immediate Plans: “My parents are coming up here for graduation, and then I am going to go on a road trip through the United States down the west coast with them. After that I am going back home to Austria to go to medical school.”

Career: “I want to become a neuro-surgeon.”

Winner Creek

Winner Creek Trailhead, a local Girdwood hike, is located just 45 miles south of Anchorage and offers a scenic 4-mile hike. It’s rela-tively flat and simple with portions of dense rainforest trails that leads to views of the gorge of Winner Creek from the footbridges above it. Also offered at the trail is a hand tram that has become a popular post for social media sites, so remember to take pictures.

Where to hike and keep your shoes clean this spring

Thunderbird Falls

The Thunderbird Falls trail is located about 25 miles north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. The trail-head can be found by fol-lowing road signs after the Thunderbird Falls exit right before Eklutna Lake Road. This short 1-mile hike to a 200 foot waterfall that often freezes in the winter, leav-ing natural ice sculptures to be viewed. This short detour at the end of the trail down to the falls offers a longer route for hikers looking to get up close to Thunderbird Falls. A viewing deck is also avail-able at the end of the main trail.

Portage Lake Trail

Portage Lake trailhead is located 50 miles south of Anchorage, just past Gird-wood. This trail offers vary-ing styles of landscape with tree cover, brush and open fields on a 2-mile hike to views of the lake filled with icebergs from receding Por-tage Glacier. Unfortunately, Portage Glacier can no lon-ger be seen from the trail, but a slightly more difficult trail is offered that leads up to Middle Glacier with a view so close you can stand on it, literally.

Rabbit Lake

Upper Dearmoun Rab-bit Lake Trail is one of the more difficult and longer trails located in the Anchor-age area. Located just 15 minutes from UAA on the Seward Highway south off of DeArmoun Road, this trail consists of Glacially carved hills offering views of a rocky tundra mountain-scape while crystal clear McHugh Creek flows in and out of the middle of the val-ley. This trail will lead you 7 miles back to a view of Rabbit Lake different from the nearby and more popu-lar Rabbit Lake trails. A Mountain filled backdrop and reflections from the lake provide a great opportunity for photography.

Powerline Pass

Powerline Pass trail runs through the Glen Alps Val-ley that is located adjacent to the popular Flattop trail. Unlike its busy neighbor, Power Line Pass stays rela-tively uncrowded. The main trail is an old beat up ser-vice road that runs above the tree line of the valley. It’s a total of 14 miles one way and is peppered with shorter loop trails that redirect you back onto the service road, to shorten the hike while still soaking in the views. A little less than 15 minutes from UAA, the trailhead can be reached at the Glen Alps Trailhead.

Ten months ago, I was standing on the shores of the Mediterranean. Before me topaz waves were kissing a sandy shore, all around me were people speak-ing words I couldn’t understand and behind me stood glimmering glass towers of metropolitan buzz. I was standing on the hot sand of Tel Aviv; a warm sea breeze carrying the taste of salt in the air.

On March 8th, not far from where I had been only nine months before, an American graduate student and retired veteran was murdered by a Palestinian ter-rorist. His name was Taylor Force. He was in Israel to learn about global entrepre-neurship, until his life was cut short by an act of hate.

Ten months ago, I was sitting in a bus. Outside my air-conditioned haven the busy streets of Jerusalem were alive. Old, young, Muslim, Christian, Jew, Druze, foreign, Israeli, Arab: people of different races, religions, nationalities and ages lived beautiful lives in a colorful, ancient and incredible city. Walking on weather worn cobblestone streets, the hot air filled with the sounds of traffic, lyrical lan-guage and the smell of market spices.

On October 13, 2015 — only two months after I had ridden a bus through the streets of Jerusalem — Palestinian terrorists attacked a bus. Richard Lakin, an American civil rights activist and advocate for peace between Jews and Muslims, died of the injuries he sustained two weeks later.

Acts of terrorism seem far away, on the other side of the world, until I realize it could have been me. I could have been the one stabbed repeatedly, shot in the chest or beaten to death. I could have been the American tourist whose name is in the story with the headline “American killed in Israel attack.” The article would tell you I go to our University; that I had lived in Alaska for most of my life.

The article probably wouldn’t tell you that in Palestine attacks like these are lauded. It wouldn’t tell you that I was killed not because Israel is a democracy, not because the Palestinian’s don’t have a state but because children in Palestinian con-trolled areas are taught to hate — indoctrinated to believe there is honor in dying a martyr and taking as many infidels with you as you can.

It could have been our University mourning the loss of a student at the hands of terror. It could have been me.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

It was August of 2013 and I received a copy of the Freshmen Edition of The Northern Light newspaper at my home address in Eagle River. Skimming the paper, I saw an ad for the position of Arts and Entertainment Editor and immedi-ately applied. Three years later, a promotion to Executive Editor, and many memo-ries later I’m saying goodbye to what has surely been one of the biggest parts of my life.

Working for The Northern Light and the people involved with the paper has changed my life for the better. It’s been quite the experience balancing my friend-ships with my staff while also trying to be a good leader. I haven’t always done things right during my time at The Northern Light, but my mistakes have taught me so much.

One thing I know is that the journey has not been my own and that many have helped me along the way to achieving my goals for The Northern Light. Without the help of Paola Banchero, Samantha Davenport, Zac Clark, Tony Craig, Anthony Crouts, Kierra Hammons, Stacey Parker, Annie Route and the rest of my staff I would not have been able to do it. All of your guidance and support has not gone unnoticed. I am glad to have worked with each and every one of you.

While I have enjoyed my time as Executive Editor and the people I have worked with, it is time for me to move on. After this semester, I will be focusing on my studies in my biology program and last few journalism classes for the next year and a half before I graduate. I will also hopefully be expanding my professional experience into the biology field.

I know that my time at The Northern Light will be a time I look back fondly on. I look forward to seeing the next generation of leadership at The Northern Light emerge. I know things will change and it will be hard to accept at first, but I know you all will do great things at The Northern Light and beyond. For those of you also leaving (George Hyde, Tony Craig and Shay Spatz) I wish you the best in your next endeavors. I will miss being on staff with all of you, but I’m glad to shortly be just your friend and not your boss.
