Did you know that our district has its own autistic support class atFredericksburg Elementary? The district also has an IU-13 run autisticsupport class in the high school! Many students throughout all of ourschool buildings have also been identified with autism. NL Alumnus Shares Adventure inEcuadorNL graduate Daymon Long (class of 2014) returned to his almamater on December 21 as a guest speaker for high schoolSpanish and Video Editing classes. Daymon recently graduatedfrom Point Park University in Pittsburgh with a degree in cine-ma arts (a semester early, he points out, thanks to his course-work at NL). During his time at Point Park, Daymon had theunique opportunity to travel to the remote village of Curingue,Ecuador to follow the Pittsburgh chapter of Engineers WithoutBorders. His assignment was to create a short film about theirhumanitarian efforts in the South American country. The fin-ished product is being used by the organization to raise furtherfunding for their project, which is bringing potable water toremote villages in Ecuador. Currently women in the villageshave to hike for several hours up and down mountains totransport water to their homes.

Daymon answered student questions and shared stories aboutthe experience, which included a lot of hiking at high altitudes, fighting a serious stomach bug, being mistaken for CNN, andeating potatoes for every meal. Daymon shared with students that he used his 3 years of Spanish atNL to help match up translated scripts to the speakers in the film, in order to create accurate subti-tles. He encouraged students to continue to study Spanish, and mentioned that he wished he hadcontinued to further his own language study. He reminded students to be thankful for the simpleprivilege of running water. He also challenged students to travel, to set their sights high and topursue lofty goals.

For more information about the project in Curingue, Ecuador, visit www.ewb-pitt.org/curingue.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ART CLUB

After a long hiatus, the Art Club is back this yearat Northern Lebanon. Mrs. Guth was approachedby eager 6th graders who were excited to start anew year at Northern Lebanon and try newthings. Starting an art club was just the thing forthem! The Art Club meets every other week, dur-ing period 9 and many of the projects were ideasthat were initiated and led by students! Onegreat example was “slime making.” Sixthgraders, Savannah McDaniels and CassieCunningham, brought in supplies and taught anentire class of 33 students how to create theirown slime! Each student was able to take hometheir colorful slime creation when finished. Thestudents also worked hard on decorating the

middle school office windows for the holidays. Students painted festive images on the windows to get NLin the holiday spirit. Mrs. Guth is looking forward to having more opportunities like this for students toshowcase their talents and provide children with imaginative experiences. The Art Club provides a greatway for students to get creative and have fun at the same time.

During the months of January and February, the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students were gearing upfor a STEM project. In an effort to increase knowledge and interest in Science, Technology, Math, andEngineering, the middle school teachers teamed up for a parachute project. During this project, the studentsfocused on connecting math and science to build a parachute safe enough for a soldier. They learned that thearea of a parachute affects the terminal velocity. Sixth and seventh graders observed each other's parachutedrops, while the eighth graders helped to teach the graphing of distance, rate, and time. The students activelyparticipated in each stage of the project - research, building, testing, and retesting.

Lots of Library Learning

To Space andBeyond!Have you ever looked up into the nighttime sky and wondered if Perseus isbattling Medusa or if Orion the Hunter still has his loyal hunting dog at hisfeet? Of course these aren’t real people, but they are constellations that werecreated by ancient cultures. Students in all four district elementary schools hadthe opportunity to experience a mobile planetarium during their library classwith Mrs. Kortright to learn about Greek and Native American constellations. The students were given an oration of the history and stars that make up theconstellations they viewed while inside the planetarium. Also, students at EastHanover Elementary School had a chance to travel to Jupiter on the JunoSpacecraft, see the National Monuments in Washington, D.C., Mount

Rushmore, Statue of Liberty, andthe San Diego Zoo all by usingVirtual Reality Google Expeditionglasses. These VR glasses allowedthe students to experience theseexpeditions as if they were seeingthese places in person. Themobile planetarium and VirtualReality Google Expeditions wereon loan from the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13.

Teacher of the Year Award

Technology and First Grade by Mrs. ShowalterTechnology is alive and well in first grade! Since the beginning of the year, students have gradually learned to usedifferent apps and technology skills to add a creative element to their learning and practice. Recently, the firstgraders used Keynote, a presentation app, to write and illustrate sentences using their spelling words. They wrotean opinion piece then recorded their work using the Recap app to practiceorally sharing an opinion.

Everyone had fun listening to the various opinions presented, but moreimportantly, heard that we have differing opinions and many reasons tosupport our opinions.

Several students used iMovie to summarize various stories about pioneer lifefrom a child’s perspective, and the whole class worked together to make amovie about adjectives.

Both first grades joined their creative talents to produce an iMovie Trailerbased on the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham.” This video was sharedwith the entire school during morning announcements as part of Dr. Seussweek. First graders love using technology to enhance and highlight theirlearning!

Congratulations to Mrs. Mosco for being nominated by thecommunity and WINNING the Lebanon Federal Credit UnionTeacher of the Year Award! Mrs. Mosco was presented with acheck for $1,000.00 and Jonestown Elementary also received$1,000.00! Thanks for everything you do for our studentsLisa!

Last year, our school participated in the all-school book club called OneSchool, One Book™ using the story, The World According to Humphrey. It wasa HUGE success, so we decided to embark on this adventure again this year! The Mouse and the Motorcycle, by Beverly Cleary, was selected for our bookclub because it can be followed, understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.

To kick off the program, the students viewed a series of picture clues thatpromoted thoughtful predictions for the title of the story. Student were thrilledto learn that The Mouse and the Motorcycle was selected! After a school wideassembly presenting the details of the program and a visit from a human sizedRalph, EVERYONE at Lickdale Elementary received their very own copy ofThe Mouse and the Motorcycle to take home. Families were asked to read onechapter each night with their children. Correct responses to the daily triviaquestions were entered into a random drawing to earn a self-selected prize. The culminating project invited students to create individual posters depictingtheir favorite part in The Mouse and the Motorcycle story to display aroundthe school.

New to OSOB this year was a chance for students to participate in ReadingBuddies! All children were paired with on older or younger student to read, enjoy and chat about the antics of Ralph and his motorcycle. What an amazingway to build a community of readers!!

Utilizing the book, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, for this program was overwhelmingly successful! Students ofall ages were captivated by Ralph’s friendship with Keith and his adventures in the motel. Keep an eye out forother Ralph stories including Runaway Ralph and Ralph S. Mouse!
