UWM Offers Assistance to Students in Puerto Rico
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is providing admissions assistance to Puerto Rican students affected by Hurricane Maria, and other out-of-state students af-fected by recent natural disasters. Routine transactions, such as obtaining transcripts, have become difficult or even impossible due to power outages and other disas-ter-related damage. UWM staff met with Puerto Rican students at the APP Strong Puerto Rico event, held in San Juan in mid-December. The event connected the island’s high school and current university students to college enrollment officers, and provided humanitarian aid to affected communities. UWM admission repre-sentatives reviewed prospective students’ official and unofficial application records, waived admission fees, and admitted qualified students on site. Admission staff will also help newly admitted students on a case-by-case basis to qualify for in-state college tuition and other assistance they may need to continue their path toward a college degree.
