Doula’s Deliver Deliver? I thought Crossroads House Doula’s were not in the baby business. You are correct. Our Doula’s are delivering end of life support in the form of emotional, spiritual & physical presence to promote a good dying experience. Our residents here are now able to not only receive one on one daily physical care, but can have this added Doula support alongside. Feedback we have received from families confirms our Doulas have significantly enhanced the EOL care we provide at Crossroads House. As of today we have over 60 trained EOL Doulas from all walks of life, who have undergone 20 hours of specialized training to make a difference in someone’s last days of life, ensuring a dignified, peaceful “good” death. Our

EOL Doulas are not involved in daily caregiving, they are an enhancement and their services are as follows. The End of Life Doula program begins with legacy building that includes the dying individual and their family. The second phase is the bedside 24 hour vigil during the active dying process honoring the wishes of the dying individual established in the legacy building phase. The third phase is the reprocessing where Doula’s meet with the family and loved ones after the death of the resident to encourage, support and offer recommendations for additional services if these individuals request added support during their grief process. Crossroads House Mission has always been to fundamentally change how people prepare for and participate in the dying process. The addition of our EOL Doula program is to further enrich the care at end of life wherever people die and ensure that NO ONE DIES ALONE. If you desire more information about the EOL Doula services please check out the Doula page on our website @ https://crossroadshouse.com/end-life-doula/.

Sweet Sasha Saga Pets can have calming effects on individuals. Just by stroking, sitting next to or playing with a pet can help relax and calm their mind. We see this on a regular basis at Crossroads House. Sasha has become a member

of the CH family. She continues to make friends with so many that come through our doors. What a stress reliever for a young child or teen to have a few moments with her in the midst of visiting a loved one who is coming close to death. We have seen over the last year friends and family who have returned look forward to seeing Sasha just as much as visiting staff and volunteers. Truthfully, its likely they come back just to see her!! We also love the fact that no matter what other four legged friend has come into Crossroads House as a member of a residents family or volunteers companion, Sasha has

welcomed them with a friendly sniff and her tail wagging. She truly is a comfort care doggy! We hope that you all enjoy these photos and any opportunity to see her in person as much as we enjoy having her a part of the Crossroads House Family. The next time you might be a bit blue, feeling stressed, stop on over during the week for a cup of coffee and few minutes with our comfort care cutie!

Remembering our Residents Crossroads House would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the families of these residents whom we had the pleasure of caring for since our last newsletter.

It’s not all fun and games, Jeff continues to make me do paperwork!! ~~Sasha~~

Support From these Activities Keeps Crossroads House Caring for Individuals at the End of their Life:

Annual Alex’s Golf Tournament The 10th Annual Alex’s Golf outing to benefit Crossroads House and the Chef Russell Bugbee Memorial scholarship fund took place at the Batavia Country Club on a beautiful Sunday in August. The time and effort put forth by Colleen and her staff is so evident as the day rolls out smoothly and fun is had by all attending. Each year the support from this wonderful group of people continues and provides general support for Crossroads

House to continue providing care for those in the final months of their life. We look forward to another sunny, Sunday afternoon of golf this year.

Supper @ Settlers Restaurant It’s been a few years now that we have been enjoying a “Supper at Settler’s night”. Back in August of last year many folks came out, supported a local business while also giving to Crossroads House. We so enjoy seeing our regular friends, meeting new ones and sharing stories of care given here. Mark your calendars for August again to join us for supper. Watch for posters around town, check out our website and local papers for the exact date in the upcoming months. A big thank you to Joni for setting this all up and the generosity of the Spyropoulos family.

Pembroke Corfu Darien Kiwanis Car Classic

A few years ago the PCD Kiwanis reached out to Crossroads House to run the basket raffle at their annual Car Classic on the 3rd Sunday in September at the Pembroke Town Park. We were glad to help out not knowing an ongoing wonderful relationship would develop with this organization. This past year we were able to expand our help by running the food stand. This gave the Kiwanis members the opportunity to focus their man power on cars, parking, raffles, and more. We absolutely loved being in the front

pavilion with the food booth and raffle. The day was absolutely perfect, cars and more cars piled in, so many people came out and supported Kiwanis, enjoyed good food, bought basket tickets as well as learned about the work at Crossroads House for the first time. Thank you so much everyone and mark your calendars now for Sunday, September 16, 2018 from 11am- 3pm at the Pembroke Town Park on Route 77.

Musical Memories

A big thank you to all who attended our 9th Annual Musical Memories at City Church in Batavia. This event has musicians from high school to 80+ years old performing. Truly playing an instrument is something one can enjoy for their entire lifetime. Thanks to Frank Panepento for coordinating this event

and bringing this wide array of musicians together. Each musician volunteers their time and talents to fill a night with music, fun, and support for Crossroads House. We also want to thank our local businesses, organizations, & families who purchase ads, & memorials, as well as the printing of our tickets and program book for the evening. Just as many notes, instruments and directors put together a melody of beautiful music, every volunteer, attendee, and donor make this an arrangement that is not possible without all involved. Hope to see you all again in the fall.

5th Annual Spaghetti Western Dinner

Crossroads House is grateful to the Missions Team at First Presbyterian Church for working with us to put this wonderful event together. Their continued support of Crossroads House in this missions

outreach event along with many other ways continues to be a blessing for us all. This evening of food & entertainment not only supports day to day operations at Crossroads House, but provides us an opportunity to spend time with a whole lot of amazing individuals. Speaking of support, we would be amiss if we didn’t send a shout out to the Kohl’s of Batavia employees who volunteer through their Kohl’s Cares program during this event and many others too! A special thank you to M.A.C. for once again providing a

great mix of music for the evening. Keep your eyes open for the posters, & community publications come fall for our 6th Annual Dinner.

4th Annual Fall Basket Raffle The last Saturday in October event has become a wonderful way to finish out our year of fundraising. As an organization we understand that local businesses give to many other causes outside of Crossroads House on a regular basis. That is why when we started this raffle in 2014, we decided to look at our own individuals and the people in their circle of friends to come up with donations. The volunteers, staff and board members of Crossroads House not only give of their time throughout the year, but they donate baskets for this raffle and encourage friends of theirs to “volunteer by donating” too. It has been a great success! We had over 180 baskets and certificates to choose from in 2017. Our mega raffles have become a big hit

too. Each fall the fresh meat trays, lottery assortment, and other prizes draw folks in. Save 10/27/2018 on your calendar for our 5th Annual Fall Raffle. More info to come in late summer.

2nd Annual Christmas Garage Sale

The weekend after Thanksgiving starts the holiday shopping extravaganza for so many. Jim, one of our garage sale chairpersons, came up with the idea 2 years ago that we should have our Christmas items out on these days. After many more hours by our garage sale team, we converted the garage into a beautiful Christmas shop. It is so exciting for us to not only be able to raise funds for Crossroads House, but to see so many individuals enjoy our beautiful items. It has even become a tradition for some to bring their little ones in to buy gifts on their own. Watching them intently searching for just the right item is priceless. In 2017, thanks to a donation by a woman of over a hundred dolls and accessories, we had a very unique sale to coincide with our Christmas sale on Saturday. Keep this weekend in mind for next year for gifts, decorating and fun! Thanks again for all who donated, helped & shopped.

Bowlers Strike Out for Crossroads House ~22 Years Strong~

Before Crossroads House was even opened, a wonderful woman named Betty Ellison coordinated a bowling tournament to raise funds to help in opening. When Betty’s earthly journey came to an end, Cindy, one of the chairpersons of this tournament was instrumental in having this be the Betty Ellison Memorial “Strike Out” for Crossroads Tournament. What a legacy to leave. Our community continues to step up to the “lane”, roll strikes for us with their support of this event. The 3 day event allows anyone who likes to bowl a chance to have a great time, win some wonderful prizes and support a great cause. We would like to thank Rick at Mancuso Bowling Center for his support as well as all the local businesses who provide give aways, gift certificates, sponsor teams for their employees, purchase lane sponsorships as well as space to display our signage to promote this event. The civic organizations, families, & individuals who donate time, supplies, gifts and continue to bowl year after year is what makes this not only a prosperous but celebratory event.

Who Doesn’t Love Oliver’s Chocolate Heart Suckers Who hasn’t heard that chocolate warms the heart. This is why every mid January to Valentine’s Day we have our annual Oliver’s Chocolate Sucker Sale. Living in WNY we can always use a warm up during this time. Thanks to our local business and chairperson, Joni, these gems are individually wrapped, labeled with a CH marking, counted, organized and ready for sale. We have many businesses, professional offices, school clubs, as well as individuals who take large numbers of these annually to sell or give away for us. This year we picked up a few new local factories, offices, libraries to name a few who were willing to put them in their break rooms, on counters, or give out as treats for their workers. This along with our already established locations, the regulars who stop in at the house and our volunteers who sell them we were able to sell all 7,000! Yes you got that number correct. We will have them again next in January if you would like to be included in our listing of places that have them for sale, please contact Jeff or Gail at 585-343-3892 to be put on our distribution list! Thank you again for warming our hearts by purchasing these chocolate hearts!

CREATIVITY, INGENUITY, THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX..

Added up to One Individual generating

over $7,000 Crossroads House in 2017! Chris started with an idea that was right under his nose…literally. He created his very own fundraiser called “Razing Hope” , supporters

purchased raffle tickets for cash prizes along with a Grand Prize of

shaving off Chris’s substantial “chin curtain”.

Chris also made contributions to Crossroads House at work and his

employer matched through an employer sponsored charitable

giving. Every 1 of his dollars = $2 for Crossroads House. Chris took

advantage of opportunities in his reach to grow his donation from a

little to a lot. His fundraiser along with at work

contributions and the employer match resulted in

over $7,000 raised! Here are easy tips you can use:

1. Check with your employer to see if matching charitable donations are offered. If they do, how about encouraging others to give and use the match too!

2. Use your imagination to come up with new fundraising ideas that can involve others you know, have fun and make your donation grow exponentially.

Support for Crossroads House is truly a team effort which allows us

to continue providing the very best in comfort care for your loved ones,

friends and neighbors.

Watch for information on Chris’s 2018 Razing Hope event. Cash

prizes will be doubled and all winner’s tickets are re-entered for the all

of the prizes. Like last year, the Grand Prize winner can opt to cut

Chris’s beard or make him keep the “lip sweater”.
