The Meadoway is an exciting environmental revitalization project that will convert 16 kilometers of Scarborough’s Gatineau Hydro Corridor into a rich urban park. The park, which will connect 4 ravines, 15 parks and 34 neighbourhoods, stretches from the Don River Ravine to Rouge National Urban Park. It will allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel across Scarborough without ever leaving greenspace. When finished, the urban park will feature 20 kilometers of mixed-use trails and be home to more than 1,000 species of flora and fauna. This seven year project is a partnership between the W. Garfield Weston Foundation and government. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is the lead government agency on this project. Preliminary work in the corridor has been initiated and two successful revitalization pilot projects are already completed. This includes the Scarborough Butterfly Trail, which runs 3.5 kilometers from McCowan Road to Scarborough Golf Club Road. This summer, I encourage you to discover the Butterfly Trail. This stretch of the hydro corridor is now a naturalized habitat that is used for community gathering and as educational space. To learn more please visit: https://themeadoway.ca Sincerely, Hon. THE MEADOWAY: 16KM URBAN PARK CONNECTING SCARBOROUGH

On April 10, I attended a ground breaking and tree planting ceremony for the Meadoway Project. The Meadoway is an exciting environmental revitalization project that will convert 16 kilometers of Scarborough’s Gatineau Hydro Corridor into a rich urban park.

Budget 2018 continues the Government of

Canada's plan to strengthen and grow the middle

class. I’d like to draw your attention to three

investments that directly impact our community of

Scarborough-Guildwood:

The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB), is designed

to put more money in the pockets of low-income

workers so they can start aspiring to join the

middle class. The chart below compares the new

CWB to the Working Income Tax Benefit, which it

replaces.

To encourage a stable supply of affordable rental

housing, the Government proposes to increase the

amount of loans provided by the Rental

Construction Financing Initiative from $2.5

billion to $3.75 billion over the next three years.

This new funding is intended to support projects

that address the needs of modest- and middle-

income households struggling in expensive

housing markets. This measure is expected to spur

the construction of more than 14,000 new rental

units across Canada.

For many Canadians, being a parent and raising a

family is the most important part of their lives.

Employment Insurance (EI) maternity and parental

benefits offer vital income support to parents

during the critical period in early childhood when

they need to take time off work to care for their

children. Budget 2018 proposes a new EI Parental

Sharing Benefit to support greater gender

equality in the home and workplace by providing

an additional five weeks of benefits when both

parents agree to share parental leave.

SCARBOROUGH-GUILDWOOD MEDAL

On October 12, 2017, I hosted the inaugural Scarborough-Guildwood medal ceremony at Guild Inn Estate. The evening recognized a deserving group of individuals for their altruism and excellent service to our local communities.

My congratulations to every recipient and deep thanks for their efforts to make our neighbourhoods more vibrant places to call home.

$4.89 BILLION FOR TORONTO TRANSIT

On March 14, the Government of Canada announced the signing of a bilateral agreement with the Province of Ontario that will provide $4.89 billion for transit infrastructure projects in the City of Toronto over the next decade. The city can use the funding to pay for up to 40 per cent of the cost of new transit projects. The bilateral agreement includes up to $660 million for the Scarborough Subway Extension project. Toronto City Council could also choose to allocate a portion of the $4.89 billion budget for planning and design work for the Eglinton East LRT. This transit project would connect Kennedy Station to University of Toronto Scarborough via Eglinton, Kingston and Morningside. Both projects would provide our community improved access and connectivity to rapid transit. They would also foster increased densification

and urban renewal in Scarborough. In April, the Government of Canada also partnered with the Province of Ontario to purchase 1,043 new buses and revitalize 695 current buses with the Toronto Transit Commission. This investment will ensure that the TTC’s bus fleet remains in a state of good repair and is able to meet Toronto’s future ridership. A great announcement for Scarborough residents who use public transit!

Shaun Chen, Jean Yip and I discussing local transit needs with Hon. Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, on March 14, 2018.

BUDGET 2018

RECOGNIZING INTERNATIONAL CREDENTIALS FASTER Helping internationally trained newcomers join the Canadian workforce faster will help grow the economy and strengthen the middle class. That’s why I was pleased to visit the College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (CDTO) on Ellesmere Road to announce $573,000 for the Access to Dental Technology Project.

With this investment, the CDTO will, in collaboration with the Canadian Alliance of Dental Technology Regulators, launch a bilingual website to provide centralized information on the dental technology profession, licensure processes and standardized credential assessments.

Canadian applicants and internationally educated newcomers will both benefit from the harmonized assessment process and the development of pre-arrival self-assessment tools to determine if they meet the required competencies.

Registered Dental Technologists (RDTs) are the skilled health care professionals that produce your dentures, bridges, crowns, implants, mouthguards and orthodontics upon prescription from a dentist. These dental devices are used to repair or replace damaged teeth and play a vital role in maintaining

good general health, speech and appearance.

To ensure your dental appliance meets the highest quality standards, ask your dentist for the name of the RDT that will fill your prescription. You can use CDTO’s online public register to get reliable up to date information about every licensed RDT in Ontario at: www.cdto.ca

Information on all regulated health professionals can be found at: www.ontariohealthregulators.ca

Jason Chai, RDT, Mashal Syed, Harold Bassford (President of Council), Judy Rigby (Registrar & CEO), John McKay, Hilary Leung, Derrick Ostner, RDT, Al McOrmond, RDT, and Janet Faas at the Access to Dental Technology announcement at CDTO offices in Scarborough-Guildwood.
