Theatre & Music

Strings: School-age students (pre-college). A-State String Project offers various levels of

group lessons (violin and viola) from beginning level courses to advanced level courses.

Program eligibility is based solely on age, even if your child has gotten an early start to

school, and non-beginning level students can request an audition to be placed in an appro-

priate level. Each semester is concluded with an ensemble performance in the Fowler

Center. Students may bring their own instruments, but if they are unable, they can email

Dr. Song at [email protected].

Scene Work/Improv: Participants will engage in improvisation activities to conquer fears,

work collaboratively in an accepting environment, and break down communication barri-

ers. Participants will perform neutral, comedic, and dramatic scene work to improve their

craft. Participants will gain knowledge of the craft by interacting with guest speakers who

are professionals in the field.

Welcome to the Stage: The main objective of this class is to introduce children to perfor-

mance through a variety of engaging activities. Students learn to work together, build trust,

and involve every member in a performance.

All Things Stage Acting :Ages 5-10. In this class, students will learn how to move, think, and

speak like the character they are trying to portray. With the use of improvisation and

movement games, students will improve their acting skills.

Get On Up and ACT!: In this introduction to drama class, students will develop fundamen-

tal acting tools: playing

an action, living truthfully in imaginary circumstances, and working with a

partner/ensemble. No matter one’s experience, participants will learn acting in a fun and

safe environment.

Beginning Musical Theatre Performance: Ages 8-11. In this class, students will learn how

to speak, sing and move for an audience. They will be challenged to study characters from

Broadway musicals and apply techniques learned to enhance their ability to perform.

Musical Theatre Performance Intermediate and Advanced: By instructor placement only.

Advanced class will require Intermediate class concurrently. The Musical Theatre Perfor-

mance Classes are opportunities for students to choose, rehearse, and perform group

numbers and solo numbers for an audience. This class may also be used to feed and/or

rehearse the FOA’s Curtain Up Crew, as students progress.

Little Actors: Ages 5-7. Learn the art of imitation and storytelling through the use of acting

and basic pantomiming exercises. Sturdents will improve their focus, learn basic theatre

vocabulary, and learn acting and reacting skills. This is a great class for newcomers and

young students wanting to improve their craft.

Theatre Intensive Ages 8-14. Improve your skills in the many different areas of theatre,

including pantomime, improv, character development, and auditioning skills. In this fun

class, we will branch out past acting and also explore other aspects that go into a theatrical

performance such as directing, writing, and stage makeup.

TUITION WAIVERS

Deadline: January 8th, 2018, by 5:30p.m.

Mandatory Meeting will be held on January 12th at 5:30 p.m.

The Arts Center welcomes all interested students regardless of a family’s

ability to pay for tuition. Tuition Waiver applications are available at The

Arts Center, and they can be printed directly from our website

(www.foajonesboro.org). Applications must be returned by a desig-

nated due date and will be reviewed by a committee. Approval is based

on annual household income, special circumstances, and applicant’s

reasons for request. Applications must be renewed each semester.

Applicants may be awarded scholarships and/or work study, and will be

notified after all applications have been processed. Applications that

are not completely filled out will be denied.

Q. What is the difference in a scholarship and work study?

A. Scholarships cover a portion of tuition for the full semester and are

given to individuals that meet very specific guidelines. The Work

Study program is for students or parents of students who would

like to trade hours of volunteer work in exchange for tuition fees.

Q. How much work is needed to pay off my tuition in the Work

Study program?

A. For every hour that is worked, $10.00 will be deducted from your

tuition. Participants will have the opportunity to sign up for availa-

ble tasks at the work study meeting.

Q. What kind of work can I do with Work Study?

A. You can usher for shows, hang posters, help organize Arts Center

storage, assist with building and painting sets, work backstage, sew

costumes, help with large mail outs, and many other activities.

The tuition waiver application can be downloaded from our

website: www.foajonesboro.org and can be mailed to 115 E.

Monroe or brought to the box office in The Forum Theater.

Additional Information for Parents

Standards of Conduct for The Arts Center

Lobby and Public Areas

Part of our focus in Arts Center instruction includes encouraging respect,

good manners, and structure in our classrooms. We would ask that you

please reinforce these behaviors throughout our facility, both in and out

of the classrooms.

Please:

• Treat all students, parents, and Foundation of Arts employees with

respect and kindness.

• Limit distractions while in the lobby by keeping voices down.

• Keep cell phone ringers turned down and cell phone conversations

at a respectful volume for those around you.

• Keep children (students and siblings) quiet and occupied while

waiting.

• Provide a walkway in the lobby clear of bags, toys, and trash.

• Put all bags under the benches so that others may have a seat avail-

able to them.

• Keep your children away from classroom doors and the stairwell

leading up to the loft when classes are in session.

• Prevent your children from running in the facility.

• Throw away all trash before you leave.

• Encourage your children to stay focused and disciplined on their

chosen art form and to be trusting of their instructors.

• Begin with the assumption that every teacher is trained and wants

every child to succeed, have joy, and gain in their discipline(s).

• Ask questions of your studio and the teacher(s).

• Remain objective about your child(ren)’s performance.
