The Sea in Art. The HermitageIn the richest collection of the State Hermitage we may find answers to many questions. Even to such as these: how did people of ancient civilizations imagine the sea? How did they express in myths and artworks their awe of the profound? What invariably attracts artists in it? The story how miracles could get along with practical considerations in the minds of ancient Greeks and Romans is told in the works of sculpture, jewellery and coins. Desire to achieve material success preserving at the same time one’s moral bearings is expressed in the paintings that belong to the golden age of Holland. The art of the 19th–20th centuries eloquently shows the erasing of border between reality and creative insight. The album includes more than 250 illustrations with brief commentaries.

Kazimir Malevich. Black SquareEach story of the series bears the unique imprint of its narrator; each has its own atmosphere, logic and plot.
Malevich’s Black Square heralded the triumph of non-objectivity, when there was nothing left to destroy in the figurative form and the object lost its materiality. This canvas, shown at the “Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0.10” in Petrograd in December 1915, embodied its creator’s conception of “the zero of form”, the beginning and the end of everything. The artist repeated the famous composition, which undoubtedly became an icon of 20th century painting. The Hermitage has a version dated c. 1930, it was formerly kept in the collection of the Malevich family.
Rembrandt. The Return of the Prodigal SonEach masterpiece of the series is a fascinating art-history novella and, at the same time, an invitation to the following tale, the next chapter in this never-ending cycle of astonishing stories, of which the museum has so many.
This whole work is dominated by the idea of the victory of love, goodness and charity. The event is treated as the highest act of human wisdom and spiritual nobility, and it takes place in absolute silence and stillness. The drama and depth of feeling are expressed in the figures of both father and son, with all the emotional precision with which Rembrandt was endowed. This parable in Rembrandt’s treatment is addressed to the heart of everyone.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Portrait of the Actress Jeanne SamaryEach story of the series bears the unique imprint of its narrator; each has its own atmosphere, logic and plot.
Jeanne Samary was an actress at the Comédie-Française. This portrait of her is perhaps one of the most famous of Renoir's many renowned canvases following the Impressionist principle of painting life as it truly is, the artist showed the actress in her usual setting. In the soft, fluid contours, vibrant texture and the finest of colour reflections, we see the stroke of this mature master of Impressionism.

Pablo Picasso. The Absinthe DrinkerEach masterpiece in the series is a fascinating art-history novella and, at the same time, an invitation to the following tale, the next chapter in this never-ending cycle of astonishing stories, of which the museum has so many.
Picasso produced this work in the Autumn of 1901, during his second trip to Paris, when he was just 22 years old. The theme of man's loneliness in a cafe, of isolation and emptiness, was not new to French art in the second half of the 19th century and could be found in the works of Degas and of Picasso's much-admired Toulouse-Lautrec. But in the paintings by the young Spaniard the theme acquired a previously unknown sense of drama.

The Hermitage Birds and FlowersThroughout the ages people have admired the perfect shapes of flowers and the natural grace of birds. They became the subjects of countless myths and legends; their images have appeared on walls and canvases; their exquisite lines have been borrowed for the creation of jewellery and architecture. The Hermitage’s extremely rich collection makes it possible to explore how artists in different countries and eras have treated this eternal theme, striving to capture the fragile harmony and natural perfection of the world’s flora and fauna. Lucas Cranach the ElderVenus and Cupid1509. Germany
The Hermitage. Cupid’s DartsThe pranks of capricious and playful Cupid, the son of Venus, the goddess of love, can bring both suffering and delight to mortals and gods of Olympus alike. No one can escape his arrows, and artists down through the ages have been unable to resist the temptation to depict scenes of coquetry, tormenting longing and desperate passion. In the Hermitage collection love stories caused by the antics of this naughty fair-haired boy are depicted in a whole range of works of art—Greek vases, paintings, engravings, bas-reliefs and sculptures.

The Hermitage CatsLives of cats and men intertwined long ago. People worshiped cats like gods, full of superstition they were afraid of luminous eyes in the dark, asked for their help in protecting houses from rodents and adored them as their best friends, while painters and sculptors could not help admiring cat’s grace which they considered perfect.
The book gives a wide-ranging and detailed presentation of the “feline” exhibits in the Hermitage: Ancient Egyptian bronze, mediaeval European painting, Chinese and Japanese graphic art, Russian lubok prints of the 18th to 20th centuries, cats in the form of toys and much more.

Journey Through the Hermitage. Queen of TulipsThey were there for different reasons: Vanya was hiding in the museum crowds to escape from fatigue and a sour mood, while Tasya had wandered away from her parents and gotten lost while collecting ideas for her album. The kids find that they have something in common: the ability to travel through time and space by gazing deeply and observantly into paintings. For them, the images become portals into a different reality, where they meet Rembrandt and his characters and also encounter Queen of the Tulips.

The Russian Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich (1596–1645; reigned from 1613), the ruler who began the Romanov dynasty, is depicted in the grand robes that were worn on ceremonial occasions like major holidays or the reception of foreign embassies.
The Tsar is wearing a platno – a loose robe with wide sleeves in the Byzantine manner. Over the platno he wears a broad detached collar. The outfit was made of magnificent brocade woven with silver and gold thread and richly embellished with semiprecious stones and pearls set in gold. On his head the Tsar is wearing the Old Russian equivalent of a crown, a
magnificent hat trimmed with fur that is known as the Hat of Monomakh. In his hands he holds the royal regalia – an orb and sceptre. Ceremonial clothing was highly valued and passed down from generation to generation.
The frame around the portrait is reproduced from an old manuscript book, the Tsarsky Tituliarnik (Book of Titles) of 1672. It contains portraits of all Russian princes, tsars and patriarchs in original ornamental frames designed by the best artists working for the Posolsky Prikaz (office for foreign affairs) in Moscow.

Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich (1629–1676; reigned from 1645) is shown in formal attire similar to that worn by his father: a loose ankle-length platno gown adorned with semiprecious stones. The Hat of Monomakh is embellished with gold, precious stones and pearls; it is topped by a small crown with a cross. Robes for the tsar were sewn from a thick fabric known as altabas – a variety of brocade ornamented with
gold and silver thread. This heavy fabric, woven with a sumptuous pattern was very expensive and used only for magnificent royal and ecclesiastical vestments. Soon, however, they became a thing of the past. As early as 1701 Peter I, the son of Alexei Mikhailovich, strictly forbade the wearing of traditional attire and introduced European dress for Russian nobles, including, of course, his own courtiers.
20
Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich (1845–1894; the future Emperor Alexander III) and his young wife Maria Fеodorovna (1847–1928; born Princess Dagmar of Denmark) are depicted in their everyday clothing, without regalia. The heir to the throne belonged the Emperor’s suite and is shown wearing the standart frock-coat of the courtiers – dark green with a red collar, white piping on the collar and cuffs,
silver buttons and an aiguillette. His greyish-blue trousers have broad red stripes down the sides.
His wife’s visiting dress is very similar to the outfits worn by ordinary women from the middle strata of Russian urban society: a wide skirt of a single grey-beige colour held out by a crinoline (hooped petticoat) that came into use in the middle of the nineteenth century. The dress has a broad girdle and modestly trimmed with flounces.
21
The wedding ceremony of Emperor Nicholas II (1868–1918; reigned 1894–1917) and Alexandra Fеodorovna (1872–1918; born Princess Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt in Germany) took place in the Great Church of the Winter Palace on 26 November 1894.
The groom wears the uniform of the Life-Guards Hussar Regiment: a red hussar’s dolman jacket with gold piping and dark blue cavalry breeches tucked into his boots.
The bride is wearing a wedding a nuptial crown with a fine lace veil, a heavy old-fashioned Russian
court dress, and a mantle with a long train trimmed with ermine.
The marriage service is performed by a protopres-byter (senior priest) in ceremonial dress: a phelonion – a long sleeveless outer vestment – woven in gold and embroided with silk, beneath which we can see a stich-arion – a long tunic descending to the floor. His mitre, headwear for the senior clergy, is decorated with at-tached icons, precious stones and pearls.
16
Emperor Alexander I (1777–1825; reigned from 1801) abolished his father’s Prussian ways and introduced a new uniform for the Russian army. He is shown in a new general’s uniform: a short tunic with tails behind, gold epaulets and a stand-up collar, decorated with gold-embroided oak-leaves.
His dandyish white breeches, made of deer or elk leather, are tucked into Hessian boots. Еhe Emperor sports a bicorn hat with a splendid plume of cockerel feathers and a tricolour (black-orange-white) cockade.
As a bearer of the Order of St Andrew the First-Called, he is depicted with the light blue sash of the order.
17
Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna (1779–1826; born Louise Maria, Marquess of Baden in Germany, wife of Alexander I) is shown wearing a dress in the classical style – a light, loosely hanging tunic with a high waist. With the succession of the young Alexander I at the very start of the nineteenth century, new French fashion reached Russia and liberated women from tight corsets and enormous skirts.
But in the harsh climate of Russia open tunics made of fine, semitransparent fabrics had to be supplemented by large Oriental shawls. Shawls were produced in Western and Russian workshops appeared later; they were usually edged with ancient-style gold ornament. Instead of elaborate coiffures, women’s hair was simply gathered in a knot, again after classical models. The Empress’s forehead and girdle are adorned by antique cameos.

Here you can see the two warriors of the 17th century. One is from the Old Netherlands depicted by Lucas van Leyden, the other is a landsknecht, a soldier of fortune, featured in the Swiss stained glass. Colour their clothes, bearing in mind that in those days red as a symbol of victory was a predominant colour in military uniforms.

Renaissance painters tried hard to make a portrait resemble a model in the minutest details. Look how realistically a grand lady is portrayed by Italian painter Lorenzo Costa! She wears elegantly tailored dress and almost no jewelry. Try and colour the dress so that the lady could attend a luxurious party!
