Ihopethisnewsletter.indseachofyouingoodhealthandreadyfor wintertobeover.AlthoughnotnativesofOklahoma,mywifeandI especiallyenjoytheOklahomaspring(withtheexceptionofthe abundantpollen).Thereanumberofexcitingthingshappeningin ourState,manytiedtowarmerweather.
Sincemylastarticle,theChaptercontinuestodowell.Our membershipnumbersremaingoodbothinbigMmembersand amongourmedicalstudentsandinternalmedicineresidents/fellows. AsofFebruary2019,wehave344bigMmembers,135Resident/ Fellowmembers,160medicalstudentmembersand16af.iliate membersincludingphysicianaf.iliates.However,since2017ourbig Mmembershasdippedfrom361.Inaddition,our.inancesremain goodandwekeepasolidreserveforoperationalcosts.
Ispeci.icallycallyourattentiontoseveralitemsofthenewsletter.Mostimportantlyareournewestmembersandaf.iliates.Forty-onenewmembersarenowpartofourACPfamilyandweareexcitedaboutworkingwiththemtoenhancetheirprofessionalcareers.WealsorecognizethreenewFellows.WeproudlyhaveeightMastersoftheCollege.ElectiontobothFellowshipandMastershiprecognizesoutstandingcontributionstoourdisciplineandacommitmenttoprofessionalism,clinicalcareandtoourpatients.IencourageyoutoconsiderbecomingaFellowandhelpingustoidentifyprospectiveindividualsformastership.Forthoseofyou,whoarenewtoACP,pleasebecomeinvolvedinourstatechapterbyattendingthefallmeetingandparticipatinginourcommittees.WealsorememberDr.Robert(Rusty)King,adistinguishedmemberofourchapterwhopassedawayinNovember.Wewilladmireandrememberhispassionforpatientcareandservice.

Governor’s Column (continued)meetingrepresentsthe100thanniversaryofthenationalmeetingandspeci.ically100yearsofeducation.Excitingly,ViceAdmiralVivekMurthy,MD,MBAwilldeliverthekeynoteaddress.Heservedasthe19thSurgeonGeneraloftheUS,andduringhistenure,hehelpedthenationaddressseveralcriticalpublichealthissuesincludingZikavirusandtheexpandingusofE-cigarettesamongouryouth.Furthermore,wewillwelcomeseveralnewFellowstotheCollegethisspringandIhopetoseeattheConvocationceremony.IalsohopethatyouwilljoinusforourdinnercruiseontheDelawareRiver.
Justtoremindyou,IthinkitisimportanttoreiteratethecurrentstrategicgoalsofthenationalACPanditsprioritythemes.AfewofthegoalsoftheACPinclude:1)establishingandpromotingthehighestclinicalandethicalstandardsinpatientcare;2)providingthemostcomprehensiveeducationandinformationresourcestoallinternists;3)providingfortheprofessionalneedsofmembersandtoadvanceinternalmedicineasacareer;and4)unifyingthemultiplevoicesofinternalmedicineanditsubspecialtiesadvocatingonbehalfofpatients,membersandourprofession.Ihopethatyouagreehowimportanteachoftheseisaswecareforpatients.
Ourfallscienti.icprogramwasverysuccessfulandablydevelopedandledbyDr.KrishnaBaradhiandtheprogramplanningcommittee.EachofourspeakerspresentedexcellentclinicalmaterialandIbelievethemeetingwasarobustexchangeofideas,speci.icallyonatopicthataffectsourpatients.WewerepleasedtohostDr.SueHingle,whoservedasChairoftheBoardofRegents.Asalways,thehighlightsofthemeetingweretheresidentresearchpresentationsandtheDoctorsDilemma.CongratulationstotheTulsaresidentteamforwinningDoctorsDilemmaandtoallofourresidentsfortheirresearchpresentations.WealsocongratulateDrs.MaryZoeBakerandRhettJacksonforbeingawardedtheLaureateAward.PlanningfortheFallOklahomaACPScienti.icMeetingisalreadytakingshape.Thisyear,themeetingwilloccurinOklahomaCityattheSamisEducationCenteronOctober4thand5th.Thisyear,ourprogram-planningdirectorisDr.MatlockJeffries,andheandtheplanningcommitteewillcreateanexcellenteducationalprogram.Ihopethatallofyouwillbeabletoattend.
Importantly,wecongratulateDr.RobertHaugeronhiselectionasGovernor-Elect.Robertisanoutstandinginternistwhohasbeenapowerfuladvocatechampioningforexcellenceinpatientcare.Hewillserveourmembershipwell.RobertwilltransitiontoGovernorthisApril.AsIapproachmy.inalfewmonthsasGovernor,Iwanttothankeachofyouforallowingmetoserveinthisrole.Ithasbeenanupliftingandthoroughlyenjoyableexperience.Iamindebtedtoyoursupportandspeci.icallytotheCouncilandcommitteemembersforalloftheirefforts.Mostofall,IamindebtedtoKathyMusson,ourexecutivedirectorforallofhereffortsandsuccessinherdingcats.Sheisanamazingadministratorandanoutstandingmemberofourcommunity.

WeextendourcondolencestothefamilyandfriendsofDr.RobertW.King,Jr.,whowentby“Rusty.”HepassedawayonNovember27,2018afterashortillness.
Dr.Kingwasalong-timeresidentofOklahomaCity,attendingNorthwestClassenHighSchool,graduatingintheclassof1964.HeattendedBrownUniversityandtheUniversityofOklahoma.HegraduatedfromtheUniversityofOklahomaSchoolofMedicinein1971.HecompletedhisresidencyinInternalMedicineandhisFellowshipinNephrologyattheMedicalCollegeofVirginiainRichmond,VA.
HereturnedtoOklahomaCitywherehepracticedNephrologyatSt.AnthonyHospital.HewasalsoDirectorofMedicalEducation.HewasavolunteerfacultymemberfortheOUSchoolofMedicineandwashonoredbythemedicalstudentsbybeingoneofthreenominatedfortheprestigiousAesculapianAwardforexcellenceinteaching.
HewasveryproudofthedayhewasinductedasaFellowoftheAmericanCollegeofPhysicians(ACP).HewasinstrumentalinbringingorgantransplantstoOklahomaCity,andhelpeddeveloptheUNOSorgandistributionsystem.HewasalsooneoftheoriginalfoundersofLifeShareorgansharingnetwork,whichstilloperatesinOklahomaCity.In1998,hemovedtoNewOrleans,LA,whereheworkedasaNationalMedicalDirectorforUnitedHealthcare.HereturnedtoOklahomaCityin2007,wherehefocusedhisskillsandtalentsonthoseinneed.
HispassionforserviceincludedvolunteeringontheboardoftheBridgeHouserecoverycenterinNewOrleans,volunteeringhismedicalservicesattheLittleFlowerClinicinOklahomaCityandnumerousothercivicactivities.Hissometimesquietpersonalitywascomplimentedbyhisastoundingintellect,wonderfulsenseofhumor,andunwaveringloveforothers.
