PTO News Thank you PTO for making our Teacher Workroom look so

beautiful and welcoming place to work. It looks wonderful!! Thank you for all the incredible things you do for our teachers and students. Mrs. Floyd• We are busy getting ready for our annual SPRING FLING

Friday, March 6 from 5:00-8:00. We have new games, Inflatables, Hanley’s BBQ, hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, etc. All of this will be available for you to purchase. Please come hungry and have supper with us!! Pre-sale ticket forms will be coming home March 2.

• New Games and a basket auction will be available this year. We will have our basket auction in our library. You will definitely want to see what your child’s classroom has created!!

• Your teacher will need volunteers to help with games for the evening. Information will be in your child’s classroom newsletter. Any help will be most appreciated.

• WES Spirit Wear-shirts and sweatshirts will be for sale. • The next PTO meeting will be held on March12th at 1:30 in the

Spanish Room.

Assessment News!

The state testing system (KPREP) will require testing the last 14 days of the school year. These days will move if we have to add additional days to the calendar for weather make-up. Please be careful when scheduling early summer vacations because of the late year testing window.

SPOTLIGHT on the ARTS!

SPaNIShIn Spanish, we have a couple things going on. 5th grade has been learning food/restaurant vocabulary and will be participating in ‘mock restaurant’ scenarios to practice ordering in a restaurant situation. 4th grade is wrapping up a unit on weather and has begun a numbers unit. And finally, 3rd grade will be diving into a unit centered around the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They will be reading the book in Spanish and eventually acting it out.

MEDIa/LIbRaRyFebruary was a great month in the library. We learned about authors Laura Numeroff, Audrey Wood, Jane Yolen, Cynthia Rylant, Peggy Parish, and Patricia Polacco. We also continued our book study of Mr. Popper’s Penguins. March will be full of fun with a focus on Dr. Seuss and other great authors.

PEI will be starting my “Jump Rope for Heart” unit and the jump rope team will start performing for schools throughout the district. aRtWe have a busy month ahead with preparations for our Fine Arts Showcase on March 19th getting into full swing!

• The fifth graders have just completed a unit on Native American dreamcatchers, which I sent home last week. I think a few of the kids were anxious to try them out! Our next unit will focus on the work of artist M.C.Escher.

• The fourth graders wrapped up a unit on color, and did a one-day exercise on contour drawing (ask your child to teach you how to do a blind continuous contour drawing!) Next, we will look at the artwork of James Audubon as we prepare to create clay bird sculptures in the next few weeks.

• Third grade completed their sculpture unit with the colorful fish that are currently swimming around in the trophy case. I am so proud of how well the kids did on this one that I just had to show off their work! We are currently finishing a short unit on radial symmetry, and will move on to study artwork by Piet Mondrian.

• Second graders are just finishing up one of my favorite projects yet this year: an impressionist style painting modeled after one of Claude Monet’s most famous works (ask your second grader to tell you which one!). Look for this one in the art exhibit later this month! Next we will focus on color relationships and pattern.

• The first grade just wrapped up a rather lengthy project based on the book Freight Train by Donald Crews. We learned that artists combine basic shapes to make more complex ones, and drew detailed trains to practice our skills. We are just starting a unit on visually representing the things that we see: drawing animals to include the important ‘clues’.

• Parents, if you have a few hours available this month and would like to help prepare for our art exhibit on the 19th, please call or drop me a line. I will need help with framing and labeling artwork between now and mid-month, and help hanging everything during the week of March 16. Any help is appreciated!

Imagine a world without literature, music, theatre, dance or photography. Art enriches our lives, adding meaning, depth and joy. As children, most of us paint, draw and sing with abandon, but as we grow older, many of us become more self-conscious and inhibited about expressing ourselves artistically. As educators, our goal is to continue to foster the natural curiosity and creative expression that children are born with---and we can do this through encouraging their continued participation in the arts, whether through visual art, music, dance or theatre.

The month of March has been designated to highlight the arts in our schools and we will embark on a celebration of the creative endeavors taking place in our district, showcasing our tremendous student artists and those who teach them. Watch for a schedule of arts events and please join us! Study after study has shown that the arts make a difference in education, not just in drawing or drama, but in math, language arts and other core subjects. How do our students benefit from art education?

Art helps students succeed in school. Art education teaches creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills and offers multiple pathways to understanding for different learners. Art also increases cultural awareness for students, forming connections and engagement between teachers, students, and the community that surrounds them. Studies have shown that participation in art education even increases school attendance!

The arts prepare students for success in work. Art education develops creativity, one of the top five skills employers prize for the 21st Century. Participation in artistic endeavors also builds collaboration and communication skills as students learn to share their intentions, receive and offer constructive criticism, and

listen actively to others’ ideas. The arts have been shown to increase students’ capacity for leadership; those who participate in the arts strengthen decision-making, strategy building, planning and reflection skills.

The arts prepare students for success in life. Research shows that participation in the arts develops students’ capacity to persist in the face of a challenge. Arts programs also foster a sense of community among participants that supports their personal, artistic, civic and social development. Equally necessary to prepare students for life in an increasingly global and culturally diverse world, arts experiences promote pro-social behaviors and social tolerance. Few experiences other than art allow for individual self-expression, and at the

same time, celebrate multiple perspectives.

The arts are such a central component of a complete education that we have recently established additional positions dedicated to furthering the arts in our schools. Earlier this year, Jessica Greene and Tim Johnson were named as District Arts and Humanities

Co-Coordinators. These outstanding educators will work directly with our K-12 arts and humanities faculty to provide support to teachers and programs with the goals of further developing student talents, maximizing exposure to student performances, developing career pathways in the arts and improving our overall arts and humanities programs.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate all of our outstanding arts and humanities teachers. Our teachers work diligently every day to cultivate an appreciation for and love of the arts in our students, providing benefits that will last a lifetime. Please join us as we salute these devoted professionals and celebrate the many amazing talents of our students.
