The versatility of the chair action is dependant upon the number of motors that the chair has. These chairs are great to enhance day-to-day comfort, or relieve swollen feet or aching legs. The big difference between these chairs and other recliner only chairs, is that they gently lower you to a seated position and raise you again to a standing position all at the touch of a button, which is a great feature if you need extra support either now or in the future.

Single Motor Riser Recliner ChairsA single motor controls the back rest and foot rest. The foot rest normally comes up first, allowing you to have your legs supported while still sitting up – once the foot rest is fully raised, the back will start to recline.

Edith ChairDesign credentials do not get better than those of Sir Kenneth Grange. Now an octogenarian, he is the man behind classics such as the angle poise lamp, the Kodak instamatic camera and the Kenwood Chef mixer. In 2011, he was commissioned to design an ergonomic chair specifically for older people by the furniture maker Hitch Mylius. The result would not look out of place in an art gallery. With his characteristic attention to detail, Grange has tested every angle and plane of his creation and produced something that is not only comfortable and functional, but also beautiful. How do riser recliner chairs work?They are fitted with motors that move the back of the chair and the foot rest into different positions. These are controlled by a simple-to-use remote control. The chair plugs into a regular 13amp wall socket to work. You need to make sure that there is a plug point near to where you would like your chair to be positioned.

How much space do I need for a riser recliner Chair?When the chair reclines, the back rest of the chair moves backwards, so the chair will need space behind it to recline fully without hitting a wall or other furniture. How to measure seat heightMeasure the distance from the floor to the crease at the back of the knees. Choose a chair which has a seat height that is not smaller than your measurement. Always go to the closest height above your measurement to ensure comfort.

How to measure seat depthMeasure the distance from the back of the hips, along the thighs to approximately 4cm (1½") behind the back of the knees. When seated you should be able to place 2 fingers between the edge of the seat at the back of the knee.

How to measure seat widthThe correct seating width should be the width of the person's hips plus a 20mm (¾") inch gap on either side. This should ensure the arms sit comfortably on the arm rests and that the chair is not too wide or too narrow.

Your weight It is important to choose a chair that is suitable for your weight. The motor that lifts you to a standing position and lowers you to a seated position has been tested to lift a maximum weight. This weight is stated next to all the chairs as the maximum user weight. If you use a chair which is not suitable for your weight it will invalidate the warranty, as it puts extra stress onto the motor.

Sit on a chair with your back straight. Your hips and knees should be at right angles and feet flat on the floor. You might find it easier if someone helps you take the measurements.
