– How do we involve a larger group –students, community, advisory, employers, college-wide

– Planning for motivation and time commitment

– Smaller questions vs. one large issue– Multiple measures – practical,

Teaching Strategies -- Teacher Mediated– Enhancing learning through “applied content”. – SCANS—already in place, narrow and use it, could

build on it– Emotional intelligence, skills, GPA - leading with

mind & heart– Accelerated Learning– Taking accelerated, potential, emotional

intelligence, virtual, and consolidating them – Connecting student learning and student

confidence– What kind of learning strategies are important for

our type of student?

Teaching Strategies -- Student Focus– Dependent/Independent thinkers and effects on

success– Brain based learning—different ways, food, PP,

computers– Leadership—West Point learning theory —

development of 9 leadership competencies to develop them across the curriculum in 4 semester process: self, class, college, job

– Citizenship and engagement– Observing the parking and why students leave--

not “having time for learning” and can’t catch up

Concept of math as key—success not as possible. Perhaps research learning styles that could make a difference.

Writing across the curriculum Math across the curriculum Exposing Students to Humanities

– Assessing the value of cultural/historical programming (exposing students to understanding and appreciating culture) on developmental students vs. the value of computerized instruction (the techno world) for developmental students.

Health - Wellness continuum focus– Body weight & intelligence link – Dependent/Independent learning skills,

Gardner’s multiple intelligences, correlation of wt/IQ—a theme which ties health, feeling good about oneself, self-image as affecting learning outcomes

– Wellness of faculty and impact to learning – Connecting citizenship and engagement in

dental hygiene students and its affect on student success and families

– Fitness program participation and student success

Learning Communities/First Year Focus Orientation (An event)

– Freshman Orientation-fund it, staff it, research question about effectiveness.

– GED orientation as part of pre-requisite to application/enrollment— Building on the success of GED to unfold a new student orientation.

Freshman Seminar (Course)– Transformation for improving quality of 1st year experience. – What is the purpose of Freshman Seminar? Freshman

Seminar—do they do assessment on what the students need help in—those needs need to be identified. Students need referrals for success.

First Year (One Year Experience)– Integrating Distance Learning and the 1st year experience.– Engagement and 1st year as a joint group – “Yes I Can” program, student identify goals and helped to

attain them.

Virtual Communities used to integrate students Computer based instruction for developmental

areas Loosening the financial aid for DL students. Does

the level of FA impact student learning outcomes?

Transfer rates---what is the student learning piece? Retention and pulling out the faculty piece Student Support

– Student participation measures– After class assistance/tutors – Supplemental Instruction focus– Some type of support as critical—many need a

life boat. They have time pressures and don’t access tutors.

QEP thoughts so far:

Service Learning Feasibility of a course- freshman leadership– in class a

focal point and requirement that introduces civic engagement, activity to be continued in other departments

Engagement with non-faculty Service learning as engagement and a way of

retaining students Student engagement –service learning, advising,

degree planning, mentoring, study buddies, etc… reaching out to students like they do in health education departments. Working w/them to communicate.
