WESTSIDE AT ACTON PARKA pop up village at West Basin, a short walk over the footbridge from the trendy NewActon precinct, is the city’s newest lakeside destination opening in time for Floriade. It features buildings made out of shipping containers and bars, coffee, retail start-ups and a large entertainment space known as Stomping Ground which will be used for cultural and sporting events. There is a viewing platform offering some great new vantage points of the city and free public WiFi. The project is managed by the Stomping Ground Collective who are behind the popular Braddon cafe Lonsdale Street Roasters — a local coffee chain which continues to pop up at various locations across Canberra. BOUTIQUE BREWERIESExplore Canberra’s microbreweries and sample a variety of locally-made handcrafted boutique beer. One of Australia’s most respected and awarded brewers, Richard Watkins, recently opened Bentspoke Brewing Co. in Braddon with Tracy Margrain. With the brewery on full display you can watch the head brewer hard at work on the next batch as you try the latest brew and enjoy pub-style food. BentSpoke Brewing Co. joins Zierholz Premium Brewery and the Wig & Pen Tavern and Brewery offering handcrafted beer in Canberra. INTERNATIONAL CRICKET CLASHManuka Oval in Canberra will host a one-day international cricket match between Australia and South Africa on 19 November. Australia’s clash against South Africa will be just the second time the national team has played in Canberra. The highly anticipated match will take place under lights at the refurbished oval and is part of a five-game series between the sides. ticketek.com.au

SHOP UP A STORMPick up a bargain, taste local produce or find a gem at Canberra’s thriving markets. The multi award-winning Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston is a Sunday institution, renowned for handcrafted jewellery, art, clothing, furniture, toys as well as regional food and wine. Visit the award-winning Handmade Market (4 to 5 October) at the National Convention Centre and browse Australian designers’ ware. EXPLORE THE BOTANIC GARDENSPicnic on the manicured lawns while watching native birds and water dragons at play or take a stroll through the rainforest gully at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Set on 40 hectares, you can walk among more than 70,000 native plants and see many endangered species, including the rare Wollemi Pine. Be transported to the outback with the new Red Centre Garden which features plants and landscapes from the dry Central Australian region.
