Spring Forward With Crime Prevention Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 11 and though our routines generally won’t
change, the way things look will—at least in the morning when we start our day. There will be
an adjustment period when you leave for the day, but facing this adjustment with proactive
ideas can help keep us all safe.
Personal Safety
Be aware of the adjustment period when you start your day Pay extra attention for children heading to school
Wear clothing that makes you visible in the lower light when walking or riding a bike
Be Prevention Minded At Home
Check the back-up batteries for alarms systems in addition to your smoke detector batteries Reset interior and exterior lights on
timers and check for burned out bulbs Check all exterior doors locks and perform any maintenance necessary
Check all windows, screens and locks to be sure there is no damage—make repairs immediately
Replace garage door opener batteries and check rollers and springs to assure good working order
Spring Weather and Spring Cleaning
As our neighbors to the north continue to endure an extremely
harsh Winter, our Central Florida weather allows us to open
the windows and let the fresh air in!
But let’s all remember to be prudent as we move into this
wonderful season. Opening the windows and doors of our
homes is certainly a privilege, but always check to make sure they are closed when
you leave your home or when retiring for the night.
Open windows and doors makes for prime opportunities for criminals to enter your
home. And don’t forget your garage door either! While out doing yard work, if
you don’t have a direct line of sight to your garage, close the door. Although it may
be an inconvenience to open and close, it most certainly is better than having some-
one walk in and take the first thing they find. Take it another step further - if you
see that your neighbor left their garage door up or windows open and you know
they are not at home, give them a call. Together we can all help reduce crime!
Do You Know Your
Vehicle Locks? Many people are unaware
of how their vehicle locks
react to the vehicle being
turned off. Or for that
matter, the vehicle being
put into gear or park. Many vehicles
have an automatic unlock when the
vehicle is placed in Park! This can
put you at risk of having someone
open your car door while you are in-
side. If you park and are going to be
inside of your vehicle for any length
of time, check the locks. It’s better to
be safe than sorry!
