IF you are looking for a spring holidaydestination, Lanzarote is the perfectchoice with guaranteed sunshine allyear round.

Situated just 70 miles off the north-west coast of Africa it is the mosteasterly of the Canary Islands whereexotic flowers flourish and sunworshippers and water-sports fansflock to enjoy the superb climate.

Lanzarote enjoys a mild, dry climatewith average daytime temperaturesranging from about 21C in January to29C in August. Annual rainfall is just140mm. It is also just 37 miles long and12 miles wide, so it is easy to getaround, especially if you hire a car.

As with all the other Canary Islands,Lanzarote’s volcanic past iseverywhere to be seen, with the rockthrown up from inside the Earthhardly changed since the day itsolidified and cooled.

Some of the most recent eruptionstook place during the 18th and 19thcenturies, so many parts of the islandappear to be from another world.

The landscape, in places, looks so‘lunar’ or ‘Martian’, that parts of thesci-fi classic, The Planet of the Apes,were shot there.

If you get bored of sitting by the poolor on one of the several beautiful whitebeaches that can be found around thecoast, such as Playa Blanca andPapagayo, head inland to enjoy thescenery. Among the many stunningfeatures is the longest volcanic tunnelin the world, the Atlantida Tunnel,

includes the La Cueva de los Verdesand Jameos del Agua.

The tunnel is over 6km long with anadditional 1.6km under the sea, most ofwhich has not been fully explored.

Two kilometres of the tunnel is opento the public between 10am to 6pm, lastadmission is 5pm, but it’s always bestto check before leaving.

Timanfaya National Park is anothermust-see attraction for any visitor tothe island. The Montanas del Fuego(Fire Mountains) which make up mostof this the park were created between1730 and 1736 when more than 100volcanoes, devastated more than 50square kilometres of the island,including several villages. The lasteruptions were in 1824, and it is notunusual for visitors to seedemonstrations of just how hot thearea remains.

Dry vegetation thrown into a hole inthe ground catches fire immediately,and water poured into a bore hole willseconds later blast back as steam.

After a day in the sun it is great torelax in the relative cool of the eveningand while Lanzarote is not nearly asboisterous as Tenerife, there is stillplenty of nightlife to suit most tastes.

The centre of nightlife in Lanzaroteis the ‘Avenida de las Playas’ in Puertodel Carmen and the ‘Centro Atlantico’in particular, however there are barsand discos in all of the main resorts.

If you are looking for a taste oftraditional Spanish nightlife, thenArrecife is the place to go.

If you select your trades-man with care you caneliminate much of therisk. Always use buildersor tradesmen who aremembers of trade associa-tions.

There are no guaranteesabout the quality of theirwork but most should bereputable.

These associations, suchas Quality Mark builders,Federation of MasterBuilders, NationalFederation of Builders, allcarry out checks on thebuilders before they gainmembership status, there-fore minimising the riskof choosing a cowboybuilder.

All the associationshave a code of conductthat members adhere to.Before agreeing to anywork, remember:lDon’t be pressurised into

having any unnecessarywork done and beware ofspecial offers which youwill get only if you signup at once.

lDon’t pick the firstbuilder or plumber yousee advertised.

lJudge firms on experi-ence. Have your friendsor your neighbours useda firm that proved to bereliable ?

lFind out if the contrac-tor is a member of atrade association thatmay give extra securityshould a dispute arise.Contact the relevanttrade association to finda member.

lMake sure the contrac-tor is established withpremises you can visit.Be wary if only a mobilephone number is sup-plied.

lGet at least three quotesand don’t forget to checkif the quote includesVAT.

lMake sure all tradesmen

Colourful: Begonias are versatile garden plants.

Begging forbegonias?IF YOU’RE looking for amass of colour whensummer arrives,begonias are a must forthe garden.

Planted with tallerplants, such as gladioli,they can be used totransform flower bedsinto sights you wouldexpect to see in hotterclimates.

They are also perfectfor patio containers,giving an excellent showof colour from June toOctober.

Begonia tubers shouldbe set into growth thismonth to ensure a fullseason of colour in thegarden this year.

The tubers should beplaced in shallow boxeswith a mixture of equal

parts sand and peatsubstitute in frost-freeframes or a greenhouse.

When small shootsappear, just over 1cmtall, they can betransplanted where theywill flower, covering wellwith soil to give themsome protection.

Using tubers virtuallyguarantees a good show,but begonias can also begrown from seed everyyear, and this hasadvantages.

Raising the plants fromseed means you shouldhave no trouble withdisease transmissionfrom season to seasonand plant to plant, andyou won’t have to storethe plants or tubers overwinter.

For every ten plantsrequired, it isrecommended you plantat least 50 seeds – nottoo difficult as mostpackets containhundreds of seeds.

If you want a colourfuldisplay this year, there isstill time to sow seedsnow:● Sow thinly in trays of

well-watered compost.● Do not cover the seed,

but cover the trays incling film to maintaina high humidity.

● Higher temperaturesof 20 to 25ºC areessential for successfulgermination.

● If you do not have anelectric propagator,place the seed trays inthe airing cupboard.

● Germination can takeup to three weeks andonce seedlings appearthe seed tray should bebrought out into thelight.

● When the plants arelarge enough (1.5cm),they should be prickedoff into boxes, spacingthem 6.5 to 7.5cmapart.

● Grow in a light, warm,airy space, protectingthe young plants fromdirect sunlight whennecessary.

● Transfer one plant to a9cm pot in May andharden off graduallyprior to plantingoutdoors from earlyJune onwards.

● Begonias are greedyfeeders and it is

advisable to use slow-release fertiliser ifplanting out incontainers.

● In the garden, aregular weak liquidfeed of tomato

fertiliser will be wellrewarded.

● It is also a good idea topot a few plants up inthe autumn for colourindoors during thewinter.

● If you do this, alwayswater into the saucerthe pot is resting in.This will help preventstem rot.

AFTER months of miserableweather spring is here. Time toshow off those legs and feet again.

During winter we tend to hideour bodies away under layers ofclothing which can mean weneglect our usual beauty regimes.But just a little TLC can soon put aspring back into our step.

Next take to the shower withyour favourite body scrub andexfoliate from top to toe. Whileyour in the shower shave your legsensuring they are silky smooth.

Moisturising is key to keepingskin soft and should be done dailyif possible. Those in need of a

summer glow should use a gradualtanning moisturiser or if a quickfix is needed use spray tanproducts which give instantstreak-free coverage.

Moving down to the feet use apumice stone on dry, cracked heelsand indulge in a foot soak to softenskin before moisturising. Cuticlesshould be pushed back carefullyafter soaking using cuticle creamif necessary.

For extra nourishment,moisturise feet beforebedtime and pop somesocks on overnight tolock in moisture.

To complete thelook clip and file nailsbefore painting in apastel springtime nailcolour using base coatand clear top coat toavoid chipping.
