SPRING MANDALA QUILT & CUSHION

Approx. size Quilt 56 1/2in x 56 1/2in Cushion 14in

BEFORE THE FUN BEGINS

Please read all instructions before you begin.

Abbreviations. “WOF” = ‘width of the fabric’.

Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store.

You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended

to replace a class.

Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from

person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric.

Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from

there!

1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated.

Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended.

Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk.

Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout.

I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes.

Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if

you come across an error so we can correct it.

Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard.

Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery.

This design and its instructions, diagrams and templates are protected by

copyright. They may not be reproduced by any process. If the project is being

made by a group of crafters, each person is required to have purchased their

own copy of the pattern. The instructions and information contained in this

pattern is given in good faith, but no guarantee is given due to the fact we have

no control over the techniques and materials used.

General sewing supplies

Cutting Instructions

1. From the charcoal linen fabric, cut:

(1) 15 1/2in square for the front of the cushion, and

(2) 11 1/2in x 15 1/2in rectangles for the back of the cushion.

2. From the aqua-on-aqua print fabric, cut:

(2) strips 1 1/4in x WOF. Crosscut (4) 1 1/4in x 15 1/2in strips for the trim.

How to Make the Cushion

1. Use a pencil to trace the required applique shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing—leave approx. 1/2in

between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced

lines.

2. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer’s

instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the

applique shapes as you go.

3. Trim the interfacing to measure 15 1/2in square, then fuse it to the wrong side of the 15 1/2in cushion front. Proceed

as follows -

Fuse the central flower medallion together using an applique mat or Teflon sheet. Let cool, then peel the shape

away from the applique mat. Repeat to fuse the larger flower, petals, and the completed central medallion together.

4. Use the photograph and Diagram 2 as a guide to centre and fuse the large medallion to the cushion, then fuse the

wedges in place.

5. Use an applique mat to fuse the (8) small tulip shapes together. Let cool, then peel the shapes away from the applique

mat. Use the photograph and Diagram 3 as a guide to fuse the tulips to the cushion.

6. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using machine blanket

stitch and matching thread. Stitch French Knots to the cushion front where indicated on the template using two strands

of contrasting embroidery thread. Press (on the wrong side of the cushion), then set aside.

7. Turn under a 1/2in hem on both short ends of a 1 1/4in x 15 1/2in aqua strip. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with

wrong sides facing and press well.

Diagram 4 ►

8. Sew a straight line of stitching 1/4in in from the folded edge using matching thread. Press, then trim along the raw edge

to make a strip 1/2in wide. Repeat to make (4).

Diagram 5 ▼

9. Centre an aqua strip, raw edge to raw edge, on one side of the cushion front. Pin, then baste in place. Repeat for all (4)

sides. Press, then set aside.

Diagram 6 ►

10. Turn over a double 3/4in hem on one long edge of a 11 1/2in x 15 1/2in rectangle. Press, then topstitch the hem in

place using matching thread. Repeat to make (2).

11. Place the appliquéd cushion front face up on your work surface. Lay one of the cushion backs, right side facing down,

on top of the cushion front. The hemmed edge facing inwards. See Diagram 7 on the next page.

12. Place the remaining cushion back, right side facing down, on top. The hemmed edges will overlap in the middle—this

forms an ‘envelope’ back.

How to Print Templates from PDF Patterns

All of the templates are provided at their full size. Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or

cropping.

Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template.

Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a

shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.

13. Pin the (3) layers together, then sew around all four sides of the cushion using a short stitch length and generous 1/4in

seam. Clip the corners, then turn right side out. Press gently.

14. Stuff the cushion cover with the 14in cushion insert to finish. You can add clips or buttons to the envelope back, if you

prefer, at Step 10.

How to Make the Quilt

1. Use a pencil to trace the required applique shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing—leave approx. 1/2in

between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced

lines.

You will need to trace (9) full mandala shapes, and (4) small centre medallion shapes.

2. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer’s

instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the

applique shapes as you go.

3. Use the cushion instructions as a guide to fuse the applique to the (9) 14 1/2in medium-grey background blocks.

4. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using machine blanket

stitch and matching thread. Stitch French Knots to each block where indicated on the template using two strands of

contrasting embroidery thread.

5. The quilt is made up of (3) rows, each with (3) blocks. Use the quilt diagram as a guide to lay out all of the blocks on a

flat surface. When you are happy with the placement of the blocks, sew them together in (3) horizontal rows. Press the

seams in each row in opposite directions. Pin and then sew the rows together, carefully matching the seams to make the

centre of the quilt. Press well.

6. Use the diagram as a guide to centre and fuse a small flower medallion to the (4) central intersecting seams. Stitch as

before.

7. Sew the (5) 1 1/4in white-on-white strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press

them open.

8. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the top and

bottom of the quilt. Press the seams outwards.

9. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the left and

right-hand sides of the quilt. Press the seams outwards.

bottom of the quilt. Press the seams outwards.

Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the left

and right-hand sides of the quilt. Press the seams outwards.

12. Sew the (2) pieces of backing fabric together along the long edges, then trim to make a piece measuring approx.

62 1/2in square.

13. Layer the backing, wadding (batting) and quilt top, then baste them together using your favourite method. Start quilting

from the centre and work your way out to the edges.

14. Sew the (6) 2 1/4in aqua binding strips together using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open.

Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and press well.
