This deposit will be put toward your tuition for the semester. You can pay online in the WINGS Student Information System or in the Cashier’s Office, 121 Graff Main Hall. In some cases, if you do not have the funds to pay the registration fee, our office can help defer the payment until the following semester. Please, contact us! ж Meet with your advisor to discuss course selection. Your advisor is listed in your Student Center on WINGS. ж Check WINGS for any other holds on your account (i.e. past due tuition payments, advisor holds, etc.). ж Some courses are not offered every semester. Be sure to account for this in your overall plan for graduation. ж Check out Schedule Planner in your Student Center on WINGS. It allows you to see all possible schedule combinations based on the courses you have added to the list. Once you have found your preferred schedule, you can import the classes into your shopping cart to complete the enrollment process. ж If you are graduating in December 2013, apply for graduation by May 1st. ж If you are graduating, you must get a “credit check” to verify that you have satisfied all requirements for graduation. Contact your Dean’s office to schedule an appointment for a credit check. Better Sleep Could Have Prevented the Challenger Shuttle Explosion As college students we have many daily activities that take up our time. Our daily activities can include class, work, studying, socializing with friends, and taking time for our-selves. Have you ever had such a busy day that you forgot to do really basic things? I have had the days where I have been so busy that I have forgotten to eat! And I love eating; it is honestly one of the favorite parts to my day! Being a graduate student and working full time has challenged me in many ways, but one thing that I rarely sacrifice is SLEEP. Don’t get me wrong, I have pulled all-nighters and ran a couple of days on little sleep. However, ever wonder why sleep is so important? Ever wonder if there are any actual benefits to sleeping? College students are one of several groups that do not sleep the proper amount on a nightly basis. Other groups include medical residents, business executives, shift workers, and new parents (Charlotte-Mecklenburg, 2013). What can happen when you are sleep deprived? Research indicates that many human errors are caused by exhaustion. Some of the biggest “accidents” in history were caused by the lack of sleep: Exxon Valdez oil spill and the NASA Challenger shuttle explosion just to name a few (2013). One third of all drivers will fall asleep behind the wheel in their life time. Per year these tragedies are estimated at about 100,000 crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,500 deaths per year. Imagine if all these peo-ple would have just had a proper amount of sleep; a large number of accidents and even deaths could have been prevented.

Page 11: Spring Prism

Are there any benefits that come with sleeping, besides flying, being a billionaire, stranded on an island with…etc.? Below are a 5 health benefits that are associated with sleep:

1. Sleep helps you retain things you have learned-It takes our brain 3 steps to learn information: Acquisition, Consolidation, and Recall. Only 2 steps occur when we are awake, acquisition and recall. The 3rd step consolidation, only occurs during sleep where your brain makes connections to things you have learned. 2. Longer life expectancy-Sleeping the proper amount each night can help improve your immune system, decrease the risk of depression, and potentially prevent cancer.3. Get better grades-Research from the University of Sanford shows that students that get the proper amount of sleep each night actually will perform better in the classroom…Wait all-nighters can be a bad thing?4. Have a healthier weight-Research from the University of Chicago indicates that people that were dieting lost more fat (56% of their weight loss) if they were well rested.5. Lower your stress-The better you sleep, the better sleep can reduce your levels of stress.

DO YOU NEED A TUTOR?We in OMSS encourage you to

BE PROACTIVE, anticipate your needs, and begin working with a tutor before you are overwhelmed!

If you are taking a class you know will be challenging, we can help.

OMSS offers FREE one-on-one tutoring for students. You will be working with other UWL students who have been successful in the course and can help you do the same. Otherwise, make sure to take advantage of the Murphy Learning Center.
