Representing the water’s surface as it

reflects the many greens of nature, this

bed runner is built from blocks made

from fabric strips pieced together to

create a new fabric. Concentric circles

quilted across the finished piece

imitate how gentle raindrops would

radiate over the water’s surface.

Cutting Instructions

Before you begin cutting, lay out the assorted green solid fabrics in order from lightest to darkest. Number the fabrics from 1 to 6, starting with the lightest. Lay out the assorted light orange to dark red solid fabrics from lightest to darkest and number them from 7 to 12, starting with the lightest.

If you’re not using a die cutter to cut the shapes, trace the A pattern on page 76 onto template plastic and cut it out. Use the template to cut the A pieces from the fabrics indicated below and in Step 10.

Make the Pieced Triangles

Use a 1/4" seam allowance and sew with right sides together.

1. From the remainder of the white solid fabric and fabric #6, use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut three width-of-fabric strips in a variety of widths from 1 1/2" to 3" from each fabric. Cut each strip on an angle so that one end is wider than the other. Cut each strip in half crosswise to make six strips from each fabric.

2. Referring to Step 1, cut six width-of-fabric strips from each of fabrics #1—#5. Cut each strip in half crosswise to make 12 strips from each fabric.

3. Alternately sew the white and fabric #1 strips together along the long edges, alternating the wide and narrow ends. Press the seams in one direction.

4. Randomly crosscut the 1 1/2" × 15" fabric #1 strip into five to seven segments. Insert fabric #7 squares between the pieces and sew the strip back together. Press the seams toward the squares. Repeat to make a total of five pieced strips.

5. Randomly make five angled cuts across the Step 3 unit as shown. Insert a Step 4 pieced strip between each section and then sew the pieces back together to make a pieced fabric unit. Press the seams toward the pieced strips.

6. Following the chart below and using the remaining fabric #1—#6 angled strips, repeat Steps 3—6 to make a total of six pieced fabric units.

7. If you’re rotary cutting your pieces, cut four 6 7/8" squares from each pieced fabric unit; cut each square in half diagonally to make two half-square triangles (eight total from each fabric unit). Set aside the remainder of each fabric unit for the binding.

If you’re using a die cutter, cut eight 6" (finished) half-square triangles from each pieced fabric unit. Set aside the remainder of each fabric unit for the binding.

Make the A Blocks

8. Sew each Step 7 half-square triangle to a large white half-square triangle along the long diagonal edges to make a total of 48 half-square-triangle units. Press the seams toward the white.

Make 48.

9. Arrange four matching half-square-triangle units in two horizontal rows of two units each as shown. Sew the units in each row together. Press the seams in opposite directions. Join the rows. Press the seams in one direc-tion. Repeat to make a total of 12 blocks.

Make 12 total.

Make the B Blocks

10. Arrange two small white half-square triangles, one white quarter-square triangle and two fabric #1 tem-plate A or parallelogram pieces as shown. Sew the pieces together. Press the seams toward the fabric #1 pieces. Repeat to make a total of two rows.

11. Arrange two white quarter-square triangles, one white 4 3/4" square, and four fabric #1 quarter-square triangles in three diagonal rows as shown. Sew the pieces in each row together. Press the seams toward fabric #1. Join the rows. Press the seams toward the outer rows.

Make 1.

12. Arrange the Step 10 and 11 rows as shown. Join the rows. Press the seams toward the Step 10 rows.

Assemble the Bed Runner Top

14. Refer to the bed runner assembly diagram to lay out theblocks in six horizontal rows of two matching A blocksand the matching B block, working from the lightest tothe darkest blocks. Sew the blocks in each row together.Press the seams in opposite directions from row to row.Join the rows. Press the seams in one direction.

Finish the Bed Runner

15. Layer the backing, batting and bed runner top. Baste thelayers together.

16. Quilt as desired. Vivian used 12-weight variegated greenembroidery thread to quilt concentric circles across thebed runner.

17. Cut the remainder of the Step 7 pieced fabric units into2 1/2"-wide strips. Lay out the strips around the bed run-ner edges, matching the strip colors to the blocks. Trimthe strips as needed, making sure you leave enough forjoining the strips and mitering the corners. The stripsdon’t have to match the color changes exactly, but theyshould transition nicely from one color to the next. Jointhe strips end to end to make one long strip. Use thepieced strip to bind the bed runner edges.
