Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see covered in this column? Send your suggestions, questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address them in future issues.
Found this in a newsletter that I get and thought I would pass it on. We all know that this happens but you still want to use the site so you agree.
Shocking look at how much of your data companies are sharing
What's this mistake? It's mindlessly reading through an online site's terms of service. Those are the excruciat-ingly long, page-after-page privacy terms that just about everyone scrolls through without reading. Companies like PayPal, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook and others share your personal information with dozens of other companies. The idea is simple: The more these companies know about you, the better they can tailor your experience to your interests and post ads for products that you like.
The problem with letting companies like PayPal, Google, Microsoft, Apple and others collect your private in-formation isn't so much that they have your personal information. After all, the U.S. government does a pretty good job of keeping tabs on these large companies. The problem is that they share your information with third parties, meaning other companies that you may not know anything about. Are those companies reputable? Scarier, who are those third-party
To be fair, online companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft have made great strides the past few years in being transparent about your privacy and security. However, they collect so much information about you and often show it to you in mind-numbing page after page of settings, confusing words and phrases. You of-ten don't know if you should check mark a setting or un-check mark it. Unfortunately, you must take the time to read through all these settings to ensure that you're limiting the amount of information they share with other companies. It's scary because sites like PayPal share your name, Social Security number and your photos (and maybe more) with third parties!
Two Things You Must Do
1. Read through terms of service
If you sign up for an online account, say Google, buck the trend and read those terms. If you're un-comfortable with any of their terms, do not check mark Continue or Yes or I Have Read or whatever wording that site uses.
2. Find the private information the sites share
Every reputable website has a page where you can see the information they collect about you. It's typ-ically listed under Privacy Policy or something similar. On Facebook, for example, start by clicking on the down arrow to the right of your name on the menu on the top of the screen. Select Settings >> Pri-vacy >> there, you can Edit some settings. Next, select Block on the left-hand menu. Scroll down until you see a blue Privacy and click on it. Take your time going through the information that Facebook and other sites share about you

CRITICS CORNER
Sister Act By Nancy Dostal
What a fun afternoon at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater. Fifty-nine of our retirees and guests enjoyed a very energetic performance of “Sister Act.” The energy of the cast was outstanding in their roles in both their voices and their dance routines. As usual, the Chanhassen provided us with an afternoon of great entertainment.
On Wednesday, January 24, 83 retirees and guests drove to Excelsior to the Old Log The-ater to have dinner and to see “Life Could Be A Dream.”
The plot is simple and classic…four young guys (and a beautiful girl) dream of winning a radio contest, falling in love and of course becoming rich and famous. The whole scene takes place in a family basement, complete with a persistent Mom-on-an-Intercom reminding them all to “Get a Job.” Sound familiar? Well of course. Songs, dances and harmony echo each inevitable plot change. “Tears on my Pillow,” “Just like Romeo and Juliet,” and “The Glory of Love.” It is a cheerful, toe-tapping, satisfying show. The show was fun. The Old Log Theatre is still a fine entertainment center.

Sunday, February 11, 22 retirees and their guests attended the Burnsville show Triple Espresso. This event has been around the Twin Cities for more than 25 years in 50+ cities in six countries and in three languages (I’ve personally seen it four times). The smaller Black Box theater at Ames was the perfect setting for this three-man show – Buzz Maxwell, Hugh Butternut and Bobby Bean.
They entertained us with music, magic, dance and an unusual shadow puppet performance. The grand piano player took requests from the audience and could play and sing anything we threw at him. Some audience participation for singing and antics made this a fun, family friendly event.
If this show comes around again, I’d recommend you go – I plan on seeing it for the fifth
time.

Good Old Fashion Humor
A group of friends, all in their 40’s, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally, it was agreed that they would meet at Hooters, because it wasn’t far from everyone’s work, the waitresses were young, good looking, showed lots of cleavage and wore short-skirts.
